BOX OFFICE: THOR: THE DARK WORLD Heading Towards Solid $82 Million Weekend

Deadline reports that the latest Marvel Studios outing earned $31 million between Thursday midnights and Friday (with an A- Cinemascore), meaning the film is heading towards a solid 82 million-dollar weekend domestic gross. More after the jump!

After opening last week in numerous territories with an impressive $100M+ haul, Thor: The Dark World made it's US debut on Thursday, with midnight showings earning $7.1 million. Between those showings and Friday, the Alan-Taylor directed sequel earned $31 million . Deadline now reports that the film is likely to earn $82 million overall this weekend and that it has received an "A-" Cinemascore (Iron Man 3 earned an "A+" earlier this year, while Man of Steel also received an "A-"). Although projections from some analysts were a little higher in the $90-100M range, this is still a solid opening for the God of Thunder, being expectedly higher than the first film's $65M opening weekend haul back in 2011.

Elsewhere, last week's number one, Ender's Game dropped 61% to fifth place, a very poor drop-off for the Gavin Hood-directed flick; this brings it's domestic total to a measly $44M, with the film's budget being around $110 million (excluding marketing costs).

Marvel’s “Thor: The Dark World” continues the big-screen adventures of Thor, the Mighty Avenger, as he battles to save Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself. In the aftermath of Marvel’s “Thor” and “Marvel’s The Avengers,” Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos…but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness. Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all. Starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Christopher Eccleston, Anthony Hopkins as Odin and many more, the film is in theaters NOW!

I guess that means Rotten Tomatoes isn't worth jack. Dark World was miles ahead of the first movie in every category.

im going to see tonight but I must say that 82 million is a little low and far from impressive.
The Avengers boost was not felt in this movie, I guess the marketing didn't do much to show the villain and fights, so I blame the marketing first.
82 million would still be a good number if this was a followup from Thor that opened with 65 million in 2011, but no! Avengers came in between making history with 207 million.

Iron Man 3 is the best example of the Avengers effect, that movie was so good at marketing that everyone felt disappointed after see that what they saw was not what was promised in the trailers cough-Mandarin-cough.

I saw it with my wife, yesterday, and we both thought it was better than the first one. Loki steals the show. That Guardians of the Galaxy, though, looks like TV land. I felt like I was watching network television or something.

As for the jokes, look, the 80's had a lot of action movies with jokes in them and we absolutely love those. Maybe that's what Marvel is going for. Beverly Hills Cop 1 & 2 are prime examples of this. But, yes, I'd rather Thor be much more on the serious side if I had a choice.

82 million is low? It's not a summer movie, the numbers are going to be lower than if it was released in a summer month. Isn't the largest November premiere 88 million?

Thor 2 looks to be doing about 27-30 percent more business than the first one, domestically and abroad. If that number sticks, it should close with about 600 million total, an increase of about 130-140 million over the original. Not bad, considering the budget is only 170 million (up only 20 from the original's 150 million,) and also factoring in that the marketing costs are substantially offset by product placement and product tie-ins.

Based on these initial numbers, it looks like 650 million is an optimistic high-mark for the film, and that 700 is virtually unattainable. I'm sure that Marvel were hoping for slightly better news than this, but all-in-all, they still have to be pleased. They're going to make a substantial profit off of this.

Great movie. Love the lil "twist" at the end. Marvel is doing excellent for their "phase 2" of movies. Iron Man 3 was great, and this follows perfectly.

Ready for Guardians of the Galaxy. Mid credit scene in this ranks as #3 in the group of after movie goodies from Marvel. Nick's reveal in Iron Man is still #1 followed by Thanos in Avengers.

I think I need to see it again. Walked away feeling it was okay overall with nice visuals, good Hemsworth and Hiddleston but weak story and villain.

It has a better feel for THOR than the original because of the Asgardian aspect and medieval vibe, but right now, I think Branaghs film has more character and heart.

But I'm checking it out again. The first time is always a frantic mind race of excitement. Second time, I can settle in.

Really loved THOR's Mom in this.

DoubleD so fun, MOS may have gotten 56 on RT, but it opened a lot better than Thor, and Thor is coming after The Avengers, and MOS after SR., so which movie did better after all? LOL

I'm not a huge fanboy of MoS, it was very good and had a few holys**t moments..56 is WAY TO LOW...seems like critics are sacking CBMs these days...i enjoy all movies and had more fun at Thor then Gravity...Fan rating for both movies is very high, we should agree that fans seems to really have enjoyed almost every CBM this year. When i see all the A rating from so many other critics. Same with MoS. and then see those totals there...doesn't sound right. I personally enjoyed this movie more then any other CBM this year BUT i spent 25 years collecting Thor comics (from JITM to Modern volume bitches...) so im clearly biased!

THIS MOVIE SHOULD MAKE A LOT MORE.

The movie was good, the humor was no ware near IM3. It was way better then thor 1. And the Collector. . Was creepy. That whole scene was weird man living in a space zoo. And Cap2 looks AMAZING.

@kenjim152: 6 million from the record November opening (Skyfall), I'd say that's pretty good!

Superman had a great opening (summer, mind you), he is after all the original Super Hero, but when the word spread about the movie it dropped faster than Routh on Singer's casting couch!

Watched Thor: The dark World last night. It was much better than the first Thor movie, which I also enjoyed. The saga continues and ended with a good cliff hanger that should leads us to Surter (we can only hope)
All in all a great addition to phase 2, I'll be seeing it again tomorrow.

@0mega

I was just about to hit you up to let you know; that pass was not only good for the midnight showing, but for 3D showing with the Cap clip.

I think you'll enjoy it if you don't analyze the plot and motivations of the characters too closely. You'll get the most out of it by going in to have fun. And I think the characters are directed really well and give really good performances.

But I do feel there was potential for a greater film. They had all the tools.

@CarlXVIGarfield The November opening weekend record is Twilight with about 150 million. Hunger Games 2 might break that this year.
