Joe Quesada Describes His ‘Thor’ Movie Meeting With Kenneth Branagh

The “Thor” movie — and director Kenneth Branagh’s vision for it — has been quite the topic of discussion among comics fans since the veteran Shakespearian actor and director was first rumored as likely helm to project, then confirmed his involvement to MTV News back in December. After Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada and the publisher’s primary architect, Brian Michael Bendis, revealed last week that they’d met with Branagh to discuss the “Thor” movie, we grabbed Quesada for a quick recap of that meeting during this weekend’s New York Comic Con.

“We spent seven or eight hours with Kenneth where he meticulously took us through the beats of the ‘Thor’ movie along with [Marvel Studios head] Kevin Feige and our friends at Marvel West,” Quesada told MTV. “We just sat there, and it was almost like he acted out the entire movie.”

As Quesada and Bendis shared with fans via Twitter last week, the pair had no shortage of compliments for Branagh’s willingness to get to know the Marvel universe.

“You just thought, ‘Wow. This guy has immersed himself in the Marvel culture — not just in Thor — but in the Marvel universe in general,” said Quesada. “He knew a lot of stuff — some things that I didn’t even know.”

“He was reciting Thor stuff from the past, continuity events, quotes from different books, little bits and pieces from stories that he really found fascinating — whether they were old [Jack] Kirby and [Stan] Lee stories or [Walter] Simonson stories or modern stuff that we’re doing,” continued Quesada. “He really got it.”

This guy is perfect for the job, and I can not wait to see what he is gonna do with the movie. Gotta admit I have always enjoyed my comic books but didnt touch on much of the Thor ones till about two years ago but from what i have read so far i have thirilly enjoyed and really cant wait for this movie. I was worried about it being ruined at first but I can honestly say that now that Kenneth Branagh has got the job i'm sure we will have a great film.

I am totally speechless, it's awesome to know Branagh really knows that much abut our favorite Asgardian goldilocks. I was kind of doubtfukl at the beginnig, but to hear Quesada saying K.B knows things even he didn't know totally rocks. This is going to be a total hit even before the filming (and please put that 8 hour session on the DVD extras, it would totally blow everyone away, I support Shaman on that)
Can't wait, nuff said....

Cheers everyone! =)

I hope he sticks with the medieval version of the story where thor is thor, not some other guy who taps his hammer on the ground to become thor. I think people need to know who the god of thunder is before doing the modern day transformation story. Save that for the sequel, otherwise it'll be like "Just Visiting" with Jean Renou. Which wasnt THAT bad now that i think of it.

Betty, I'm with you on the dual-identity route. Not a big fan. Let Thor be Thor.

It's awesome to see how much Marvel cares about their products. They really try and find a director that's as dedicated as they are. It will be the same way with Captain America and Ant Man and the Avengers may be one of the best movies, um, EVER!

I agree with both of you, to an extent... I would love to see them give him the proper treatment on his own, and THEN incoporate the "dual identity" theme.

I think they should at least touch on the dual identity stuff in the first movie. Ijust feel the non fanboy audience needs to be able to relate to. I wish they could make movies just for us, but if we want to keep seeing these kind of movies then they need to appease all audiences. I have a feeling Branaugh is going to get it right though

dbzfan...i've already posted my picks on a previous thor movie page. since we've got a former hogwarts professor at the helm of the film, my vote's for the kid who played ron. rupert grint + plus mega cgi muscle assistance = hilariously wrong thor movie.

screw the dual identity bullshite! why do "WE" always have to be able to see ourselves in something in order to identify with it. If thats the case i want to see a movie that has a Native American Jesus,Buddha,KRS NA and a Native American Osama Bin Laden when his movie gets made or else i will not Identify with it I swear on your infidel lives !!!LALALALALALALALALALALA!!!!!!!!!!
Let GODS be GODS! damn the rest!!!
Oh and Carl Urban ??? isnt he a country singer er sumthin like that?

I can Thor being Thor in this movie, an epic warrior fighting his half-brother Loki for the fate of Midgard, then somehow, perhaps through Loki's malfesense, becomes entraped in a staff at the end that Doctor Blake picks up in the final scene....

Or they can use the cooler Ultimate Thor and have him always be Thor, something that seems strange to the humans around him. This first film will feature him in all his epic-ness, then ends with him returning to the world in modern times trying to get his bearings when a man with an eyepatch approaches...

Either way, it will pretty cool. Never really been a Thor fan, but Im actually looking forward to this.

Great to hear that another director who really knows his comics will be taking care of Thor. And hearing that the guy's knowledgeable in the classic and modern Thor, i wont be surprised if its gonna be a combination of both. Blake or no Blake, the movie will be good.

I'm really looking forward to Thor. I'm anxious to see how it will all look, especially how Thor will look in his get-up. With Marvel being impressed on how well versed the director is in their property just adds to the anticipation. Those guys can't work fast enough.

I get the feeling that Thor will be a British actor. I would put my money on Gerard Butler.
Shaman
Shaman - 2/11/2009, 11:00 AM
I'd actually be happy with Butler as well. He's talented and popular enough to put "non-fans" buts in the seats.

The thing about butler is that i cant he looks weird as blonde. ;) He'll go like "Tonight we dine in He... i mean Valhallaaaaaaa!"

Well remember all Bond fans went nuts when Daniel Craig was casted. They called him "James Blond" because of his difference to the character´s hair.. but after Casino Royale, they let him alone, since he pulled it off well.

And he didn´t change his natural hair(blond) to fit bond´s looks. So, or Butler stays with his brown hair or they will make changes to his look, or better yet they go for Urban. Nice pick both of them IMO.

Personally I like Vladimir Kulich, he played Buliwyf in "13th Warrior".
Also, Kevin McKidd ("Journeyman") for Donald Blake.
But I also like Urban, he's a good pick as well.

Here's a thought guys - IF Branaugh and company decide to go with the Blake/Thor dual-identity theme (god forbid, I know...), who better to play the Blake part than the director himself?!
