THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER Concept Art Reveals Alternate Looks For TED LASSO Star Brett Goldstein As Hercules

Thor: Love and Thunder's biggest surprise came in the movie's mid-credits scene when Zeus sent his son, Hercules, after the MCU's God of Thunder. Ted Lasso star Brett Goldstein has been cast as the hero (who may be more antagonist than protagonist in this world), but that's all we've seen of him for now.

Marvel Studios' Director of Visual Development Andy Park came up with Hercules' comic-accurate costume, and he's finally shared some of the alternate designs considered for the character's live-action MCU debut.

Last year, we spoke with Andy about his take on Thor's new rival. The concept artist shared his excitement to learn he was working on the character and some insights into how he approached the suit as a fan of Hercules' adventures on the page in the 80s and 90s.

"I got to design that one which was really fun because before I designed it, I had just finished watching [Brett] in Ted Lasso [Laughs]. I love that show and the first time I saw he was this character I said, ‘Oh my gosh, he’s going to play Hercules?’ I went to designing that and, again, growing up in the 80s and 90s with Marvel Comics, he was part of The Avengers."

"It becomes a question every time we do a design, ‘How comic accurate can you be?’ I did a lot of different versions and one got picked. We got to see it in the end credits and that was such a treat to be able to see that and also fun to be in the audience whether it was in the premiere or when I watched it after with a regular audience to see the reaction."

These designs are all largely the same but there are subtle differences which ultimately make Hercules look very different. The final design is arguably the best as it sticks so close to the source material, though we'd argue that any one of these would have done this mighty Avenger justice on screen.

Thor: Love and Thunder's mid-credits scene was presumably meant to set the stage for a Thor 5 pitting the God of Thunder against Hercules, though comments from Disney CEO Bob Iger have somewhat cast doubt on the possibility of us getting a fifth instalment in this or any other Marvel Studios franchise.

You can see Park's designs below along with an epic keyframe he did featuring Thor and Love.

The movie finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor.

Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.

Directed by Taika Waititi, the movie stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, Tessa Thompson, Russell Crowe, Jaimie Alexander, Chris Pratt, Karen Gillan, and Sean Gunn among others.

What an odd choice for hercules

@Ryguy88 - Yes odd choice but he could be a worthy replacement to Thor because they've ruined Thor and we haven't had enough of Hercules yet for him to be ruined.

@marvel72 - lol true. I do think that Thor can be salvaged though, with the right director and story.

@Ryguy88 - Seriously. He had to be a last minute pick. No way am I to believe that this guy is Herakles/Hercules.

terrible choice. does not even have close to the standard of physique required to play Hercules. what on earth were they thinking?

@KingLeonidas - they were thinking, "we need the straight man to play off of our goofy Thor". They dont care that he cant bench even 200lbs.

Yeah, I'm not buying this dude as a physical rival to Thor being half Hemsworth's size.

Wonder, will they do Thor 5 (probably with another tonal shift) or will this be resolved elsewhere

Casting sucks, costume is 'ok' but looks cheap. No chance Thor 5 happens. Secret Wars/Avengers Forever will be the ending of the MCU. Hercules will probably be rolled into whatever Battleworld concept they have between Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars.

Hate the idea they made a cliffhanger for this character without any intention to follow up on it - nobody involved with the film even knew this scene existed. It was purely added just to bait the audiences into thinking 'the story continues'.

All the legacy actors are in varying stages of injury, poor health or desiring to retire from the MCU. It'd have been better to end things with Endgame.

Of course we know that they can't just grab body builders to play these characters(except for Arnold Swartzneggar), they need REAL actors, but common man, Chris Hemsworth is not a body builder and they did a GREAT job with his casting.

Bad casting choice here.

Zeus was so terrible In Thor 4, that I just don't care about crappy miscast Hercules.

I want to see more of Hemsworth Thor. Waititi won't be allowed near it. The MCU should just forget Zeus/Hercules & never bring them back. They were just too awful to fix.

Despite the flaws of L&T, I thought Goldstein was a particularly inspired casting decision. Sure, he's not as big as Hemsworth, but I don't care about that as much. I could see his acting sensibilities playing well enough with Hemsworth to share an interesting character dynamic. He has a certain aggressive swagger that I think could really challenge Hemsworth's presence.

If the only complaint is that he's not big enough, I don't consider that a great criticism of the actor or casting decision. Hemsworth almost wasn't Thor because he wasn't "big enough". Nobody would say that now.

@SheepishOne - i would much rather have a good actor, that may not be able to be as big as i would like...than some beefy man who can't act to save his life...arnold has some fun movies...and he plays himself in every one...just like the rock...and they are/were beefy and hot as hell...horrible actors

As a thrown together almost last minute addition, it's not a bad look. I don't know the actor at all, so can't talk about his skill, but he would certainly get enough time to bulk up for whenever he actually has to play the part, his current size doesn't matter too much.

Naw man.......We're talking about HERCULES, not some regular strong dude. Thor & Hercules are two characters that HAVE to be BUILT, most other Marvel superhero characters who are strong don't need to be as big. But Hercules & Thor DO.
