ARROW: Katie Cassidy On Possibly Becoming Black Canary

ARROW: Katie Cassidy On Possibly Becoming Black Canary

As we know, Cassidy will play Laurel Lance in the CW's take on DC Comics' Emerald Archer Green Arrow, but will we see her don a costume herself and become the 'Black Canary'? Cassidy thinks it will "probably happen" eventually..

When Katie Cassidy was cast as Laurel Lance in the CW's Arrow, fans wondered if this character - better known to comic fans as Dinah Laurel Lance - would eventually throw on a pair of fishnets and fight crime alongside Oliver Queen as Black Canary. But when it was revealed that this take on Green Arrow would be jettisoning the superpowers, it seemed unlikely - at least not any version of the character that retained her 'sonic scream'. Of course that doesn't mean we won't see Cassidy suit up as a de-powered version of Black Canary at some point. In the following interview with Ksitetv.com, the actress discusses the possibilities, and how knowing the story behind the character in the comics affected her audition/performance..

“When I originally had auditioned for this part, I basically came up with a back story that was legitimate to the material that I was given—the pilot. Creating back story to make this person as authentic as possible, I did a little bit of research, but I also, at that point, didn’t consider the Black Canary because I didn’t know. When – if [she becomes Black Canary] is always still a question. You never know with these writers; they could do anything. I try not to think about that at this point because I think sometimes I can get in my own way if I over-think it. I think as far as the Black Canary goes, it will probably happen very organically. I know that Laurel is very strong, very tough. She comes from a middle class family; her father’s a cop; she knows how to fight. It will be something that happens organically, and it’s probably going to be pretty cool."

Arrow premieres on the CW this Wednesday, and you can check out the full interview with Cassidy by clicking the link below.

Girl signed up to play Black Canary and didn't even know it. Sounds like such a promising show.. :/
Why even use Dinah if you're not going to make her Canary?

im not GAY though and GOD forbid it but i would like her as lady not to consider the fishnet costume of the black canary it's kind off demeaning for women they should just give her a normal good costume imo

I think this is something like the approach to TDK trilogy, although I don't like the fact that they're 'DUMBING' down her abilities, I would like to see where they take this.

I would tap that, Katie's hot. I think I saw one of her tities poking out of that suit, I'm definitely watching this. Oh and of course because I'm a fan of GREEN ARROW.

@thatdylhooper im not gay and it's pretty weird and just demeaning for women that is all and i highly doubt she will be black canary in the show.

To everyone on this site using source material as an excuse let me tell you something as a comic book fan it is stupid just because it looks good in the comics does not mean it will look good in real life it would make women feel for demeaning in the eyes of men, we should learn to give women respect they deserve and a woman of kate's stature will definitely not put on those fishnets because it iis stupid and demeaning for her as a person and not as a comic book character... and a real comic book fan will know that i am speaking the truth

I agree with Darkmetal 100%. The fact that some of you would be upset over her NOT wearing fishnets in a Canary costume is ridiculous.

Look at it like this: Smallville had that "No tights, flights" thing for the first six seasons. When the original writers left that eventually changed. In other words, Eventually we will see Black Canary on Arrow with her scream. It's gonna happen

I don't think anyone is saying something needs to be exact to the source. A decent reflection of the source look would be nice and it can be done well. The Avengers proved that. There was no mistaking who the characters, both heroes and villain were by just looking at them.

I think she would be great as Black Canary, so I hope it happens.

I know she'll be Black Canary sans Canary Cry, but she still has her martial arts training at her disposal. She will still kick ass!

@RobLiefeldFan In real life, some girls actually like wearing stockings. You saying it's demeaning to women isn't a completely valid statement.

Personally, I like a little mystery when it comes to women, you know, it doesn't really matter if she's not wearing fishnet stockings. If she ends up wearing tights or pants instead, that's not a deal breaker for me. As long as her character is true to the source material(origins, personality, well adapted costume[fishnet stockings not necessary]) and she kicks ass, then I'm good.

source excuse or not, there's no reason not to use the nets. they are NOT demeaning in and of themselves... like jonathanismagnum said, it's not the STOCKINGS that are slutty, it's the tight spandex and the thong-cut bodysuit. she can wear shorts with the stockings like my gf does, and it'll be fine. i mean, plenty of women wear nets to the OFFICE as long as their skirt is mid-thigh or lower. true, they're not vital, but it's even MORE silly to dump them for some uptight prudes like RLF up there.

All of you supporting fishnets are boys who don't see real girls except the ones on the internet.. And any girl that likes wearing fishnets even if its your girlfriend (yes I'm talking to you hellshammer) is a typical hoe who will lay around with anybody that has a stick inbetween his legs

@mrgeoff88 I like it when comics are true to the source material but in real life Fishnet stocking will never work and I have already said it before only girls without dignity who rather thinks her life is a game and she doesn't respect herself would were fishnets just to please some male comicbook fans... I recently took a survey in my class a minute ago all the girls said it would be stupid for a girl like kate cassidy to put on fishnets just to please male nerds infact they were highly disgusted in her costume.. One went as far as saying that is why she stopped reading dynamite's line of comics...

And for me finally all I'll say is we know it's wrong, you know it's wrong she knows it's stupid and the producers know it's wrong.. Let's think with our brains and not with our cocks

In the end the only thing that is demeaning the women is YOU who is judging them about what they wear and also YOU are saying they all feel like men and society looks down on them for it when in fact no one even cares because it isn't even that serious. Most girls I know my girlfriend especially wears them maturely she doesn't look like a SKANK.
You knocking a fictional superhero lil guy. Why aren't you knocking zatanna who wears fishnets or Wonder Woman who only wears a top and underwear?
