ARROW Producers Say No To Superpowers And An Appearance From "The Trinity"

Arrow executive producers Marc Guggenheim and Andrew Kreisberg confirm that fans shouldn't get their hopes up when it comes to appearances from the likes of Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman, also making it clear that superpowers have no place in this universe.

In an interview with Zap2it, Arrow executive producers Marc Guggenheim and Andrew Kreisberg have confirmed that we shouldn't hold our breath for the world in the new CW show to ever become as fantastical as that of Smallville. However, this doesn't necessarily mean that fans won't still see some of their favourite comic book characters on the small screen. "What it does is it creates an opportunity for us to reinvent some characters and present them in a non-powers, grounded way," Kreisberg explains.

So, does that mean we'll be seeing powerless versions of Superman and Green Lantern? Thankfully not! "I think as far as those big names like Clark Kent and Bruce Wayne and Hal Jordan and Diana Prince, we're going to shy away from that, especially because we really want to establish Oliver Queen as our hero and our lead," Guggenheim says. "We're not looking to do Justice League as our TV show. We're doing a show called 'Arrow,' which is about Oliver Queen. Anyone who comes into his world will be a supporting character. Those characters aren't supporting characters. Those are leads. So we'll be focusing more on supporting cast in the DC universe. People who come in and complement Oliver, not overtake him."

Guggenheim adds that the reasoning behind this comes from a very specific place. The realistic world and tone set by Christopher Nolan in The Dark Knight Trilogy. "Chris Nolan took Ra's al Ghul, somebody who in the comic books literally is immortal and has supernatural elements to his character, and presented him in a more grounded, realistic manner -- took his immortality and gave it a sort of real world twist in 'Batman Begins'," he says. "Same with Bane, who has superpowers in the comic books, is presented as just a man [in 'The Dark Knight Rises']." Do you guys think this is the right direction for the series? Sound off with your thoughts below.

I've gotta say, the more I hear about this show the more excited I get about it. It looks like they really have a clear vision for which direction they want to take it. I hope it ends up really surprising a lot of people! (myself included)

I still think it'd would be awesome if at least they mentioned a lot of characters. Especially batman and superman. Since they haven't recast bruce wayne in the cinematic universe yet they could have a very brief cameo of him. I mean, batman doesn't have superpowers :P

I guarantee, without a shadow of a doubt, Bale will NEVER cameo on a television show.

Snorefest. The point of superhero stories is to ESCAPE from reality. Why not just make another "reality" show while you're at it?

I love Nolan's Batman trilogy, but enough with the "no-superpowers" take on superheroes. But I probably won't watch the show anyways so I guess it makes no difference to me. I'm guessing this show will fail big-time.

Yeah no. This is the probably the most anticipated show of the fall, plus it's been getting rave reviews. Why the hell are you nerds so negative about EVERYTHING? Seriously? It can't be healthy to have so much hate stored in your heart.

@Crimson Ark

The Smallville fans will not like the "realistic" approach, and every other average tv viewer will stop watching once they realize it's not like Heroes. But like I said earlier, that's my opinion. Thanks for being a douche about it though!

Here's the deal.... WB will not allow characters they are planning to put in motion pictures to be on television... it is a rule of theirs. PERIOD.
They believe no one will pay to see the character in the theaters if they are getting the character free on TV.
Motion pictures are too expensive and too big a risk.

Its a TV show on a basic channel network. Super powers = larger budget. No shocker there.

Woah, I get their point in not doing so. But damn, they really just shut down nearly the whole DCU, the DCU is nothing without Fantasy. They come off as a little bit ignorant here, I mean there is a VERY small percentage of characters in the DCU that can't lift cars or read minds or any other supernatural ability. If they don't change their minds on this, I don't see this show excelling past Season 3.

You guys know Black Canary is a fighter, too, right? She doesn't just scream at people.
Speaking of which, I bet they could put Wildcat in!!

We'll see how long that last. The ratings get low and sweeps months start coming around, they might rethink that idea.

ST Voyager's producers said that with the show set in the Delta Quadrant, fans shouldn't expect to see aliens from the Alpha. They were charting new territory and would only feature unseen species.

Then before you know it, there was an episode with Klingons, Ferengi, at least two with Romulans and then after First Contact was such a hit, the Borg were on there damn near every other week.

"What it does is it creates an opportunity for us to reinvent some characters and present them in a non-powers, grounded way,"

See what Nolans films have done! Now everyone thinks that heroes need to be reimagined and made more realistic. You dont need to reinvent the characters, minor tweaks here and there are fine but you must stay true to the character. I dont know what to think about this show after having heard that?
Luminus
Luminus - 8/23/2012, 5:57 PM
@DrainBamage: First Contact established that the Borg lived in the Delta Quadrant, so Voyager couldn't possibly avoid using them.

DrainBamage
DrainBamage - 8/23/2012, 6:06 PM
@Luminus Of course they could avoid using them. It's a tv show...they could've written the stories however they want.

Then it didn't stop with just an appearance. There were cliffhangers, the Borg Queen, a Borg crewmember and just when you thought they couldn't go any lower...Borg kids....one more time...BORG KIDS. Seriously? And in the process, they watered down one of my favorite villains.

DC = Disappointment Continues....

Every time a producer says "reinvent some characters," regarding a DC property, my sphincter closes up. How about we stop trying to "reinvent" the existing characters and just stick to how they have been for, ohhhh, 50+ years? How bout that, DC?!!?!? How about you get the damn characters RIGHT for a change, before you start reinventing?!? Huh?!? How about it?!?! How about you STOP letting producers who have NO FREAKING IDEA about these characters, find new and exciting ways to SCREW THEM UP?!?!?!

Sorry. Sorry, but GODDAMIT, I'm sick of this crap. Stop being cheap, stop reinventing....just do something for the fans for FREAKING CHANGE!!

Luminus - 8/23/2012, 6:12 PM
@DrainBamage: Not to turn this into a Star Trek forum, but the Borg were popular and hadn't been fleshed out so the producers had the perfect chance to do it; hence, why I said it was unavoidable. The Borg guarantee good ratings. On the other hand, I agree that Voyager ruined the Borg, but only AFTER "Scorpion Part I & II." "One" was a great Borg episode, too. In either case, I have nothing bad to say about 7 of 9. She is perfection.
