AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. Star Clark Gregg Addresses Whether He'll Play Phil Coulson Again

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s final season is fast approaching, but will Clark Gregg return as Agent Phil Coulson? The actor has addressed that question, and admits to having an uncertain future in the MCU!

Clark Gregg is a Marvel Cinematic Universe veteran, and he's been around since the very start after first playing Agent Phil Coulson in 2008's Iron Man. His story reached a tragic end four years later in The Avengers, but Marvel Television resurrected him the next year in ABC's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Seven years later, and his time as the character (now a Life Model Decoy) appears to be reaching its end, but is that really it for Coulson in the MCU? After all, he appeared in Captain Marvel for scenes which were set in 1995, so there has to be ways for him to continue playing the beloved hero.

"This seems like a real good time to announce that...I really don’t know," Gregg laughed when Variety asked whether he'll return. "Sorry. That was a little bit of quarantine sadism. I don’t know anything! It’s hard for me to imagine a scenario where I’d say, 'No, I’m too busy to put on whatever the latest version of the suit is and go play Phil Coulson.' I’m always thrilled when I see them changing timelines and exposing a multiverse in the cinematic [universe]."

"Because I think, 'Well, I’ve seen scenarios where I could be around!' So I really learned with this character to never say never, but I’m also really grateful for the ride that we had."

Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige doesn't appear too concerned with adhering to what happens on television with future MCU stories, so him bringing Coulson back isn't a huge stretch. Whether he will want to retread old ground, however, is unclear, but flashbacks are a distinct possibility.

I really liked him in the role, but AoS really needs to let go of him

@MalseMarcel - i like that we have had 22 movies and no one except fury knows he is alive. I think it will be great to bring him back. i can see Steve in his alternate timeline doing things with coulson since coulson also has dabbled in time travel.

@MalseMarcel -
As far as I am concerned AOS is his story.

I love any helping of Gregg’s Phil Coulson. And I love the fact that he seems to feel the same way.

There are definitely characters that I think shouldn’t come back unless it’s a big enough deal (I’m wary of the idea that RDJ might pop up as Stark in “Black Widow”, for instance... too soon, and it makes his death seem slighter), but I’m more than okay with a cameo by Coulson whenever they want to toss one my way.

Nah the MCU doesn't acknowledge the TV shows, so he's dead and forgotten.

@jj2112 - right now, my neighbors three doors down are starting their day, I don't acknowledge them, therefore they don't exist?

Between the movies and SHIELD, Coulson and Gregg have had a really terrific run in the MCU.

I liked him but honestly Captain Marvel would have done better to explore a younger Maria Hill or Alexander Pierce in Captain Marvel... then again, that movie was fairly disappointing when it came to exploring SHIELD's background anyway....

@Slotherin - I just said Captain Marvel twice

@Slotherin - yeah, i don't think a Captain Marvel movie really should be focused on explaining the early years of SHIELD... as that happened way before CM's time. I could see time travelling Steve Rogers as having a good venue to explain the early years of SHIELD... he could have helped establish it with Peggy and Stark and Pym, heck even time travelling Loki could factor into it alongside Odin, Thor, etc. Maybe AoS is not the first time Sif has come to see them. She is thousands of years old too is she not?

@Slotherin - Going by Colbie Smulder’s real age, Maria Hill would have been 13 during the events of Captain Marvel.
