Brett Dalton On Where 'Grant Ward's Head Is At Now In AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.

Though he was seen as quite a bland character at first, the duplicitous former Agent Grant Ward has emerged from the first season of Marvel's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. as something of a fan-favourite. What's in store for him now that he's SPOILER from SPOILER? Actor Brett Dalton offers some insight..

This will contain SPOILERS for last night's episode of Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D by the way. After spending the first few season 2 eps in a cell, Grant Ward is finally a free man. The character betrayed his team-mates towards the end of season 1 and did some pretty awful things (the attempted murder of Fitz and Simmons topping the list), but we always got the feeling that he did have genuine feelings for Skye, and at least respect for Coulson and the others. In an interview with EW, actor Brett Dalton says that Ward hasn't "told a single lie this entire season", suggesting that the disgraced Agent does indeed still have some emotional ties to his former comrades in arms. Dalton then discusses Ward's mindset now that he's free, and whether he thinks he'll return to Hydra or not.

"I always felt like he was more loyal to Agent Garrett (Bill Paxton) than he ever was to Hydra as a whole, as an evil organization bent on world destruction. I really had a father figure in Agent Garrett, and he made a choice about which way the wind was blowing and decided to swing his sails, and I followed Garrett. I don’t think Ward has Hydra tattooed across his chest or anything like that. He’s really been through a mental, psychological journey. It’s not quite good guy, it’s not quite bad guy. It’s not trying to get in with S.H.I.E.L.D. again, it’s not trying to get in with Hydra. He’s really on his own path. He’s living by his code at this particular point in life. It’s interesting to see someone gone rogue like that, who has so many skills and can pretty much do anything. It’s just what do you do with those skills once you’re out?"

Do you think Coulson and the others can ever forgive Ward and welcome him back into the fold? Would he even want that? What do you think is next for the character? Sound off below, and be sure to check out the rest of the interview at the link below.

After what Coulson told him this episode I´m sure he will never be part of the team.
At most he will help them but they will never take him in

He'll be a Punisher type anti-hero...

I don't know if they were thinking about turning Ward evil when they casted him, but if not, they got lucky because Ward looks straight up psychotic now.

My guess is that Skye will get into some trouble and his feelings for her will motivate him to save her and end up doing something good.

As far teaser's go Ror, that's one of the most spoiler-conscious I've seen. A lot of people don't appreciate how hard it is not to spoil something when writing about it - nice work!

I love Ward. He represents one of the best character transformations I've ever seen on TV. Great writing!

As much as him becoming Taskmaster is cool….I'd rather see him take the code name Ronin.

Ronin, as you may know, is a samurai without a master. Much like Ward is himself.

And since Hawkeye will be 'Hawkeye' for awhile in the MCU, there is no reason Ward can't take up the monicker.

Speaking of Hawkeye, I hope AOU answers all of our questions about what Banner and Barton have been up to since Avengers.

I'd like to see him take the anti-hero path, but last night's episode he came across just a bit crazy and has a stalker way about him when it came to Skye.

It's possible he could come back to the fold and I wouldn't mind it, but damn, it'd be hard to trust him. As much as I like the character, I don't trust him one bit.

I don't care what anyone says... this mother[frick]er can act. He's become easily the best character on the show. I love Evil Ward.

@EzioKenway1225 - I was just thinking how much more of a Whedon-eqsue feel Season 2 has. It's been such a remarkable turnaround!

I do not want some hackneyed redemption attempt and I think Coulson's scolding of him last night was proof that they CANNOT go down that road. He has murdered numerous times and was responsible for the brain damage of one of the main team members. If the writing is good, there is no going back for him.

Now if he were to become the task master...
