S.H.I.E.L.D is making their presence known not only in the movies, but in the real world as well! A new billboard was spotted today in Los Angeles to promote Marvel's upcoming television series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which airs on ABC this fall.

Clark Gregg reprises his role of Agent Phil Coulson from Marvel’s feature films as he assembles a small, highly select group of Agents from the worldwide law-enforcement organization known as S.H.I.E.L.D. Together they investigate the new, the strange, and the unknown across the globe, protecting the ordinary from the extraordinary. Coulson’s team consists of Agent Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), highly trained in combat and espionage, Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen) expert pilot and martial artist, Agent Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker); brilliant engineer and Agent Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) genius bio-chemist. Joining them on their journey into mystery is new recruit and computer hacker Skye (Chloe Bennet). From Executive Producers Joss Whedon (“Marvel’s The Avengers,” ”Buffy the Vampire Slayer”); Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen, “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” pilot co-writers (“Dollhouse,” “Dr.Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog”); Jeffrey Bell (“Angel,” “Alias”); and Jeph Loeb (“Smallville”) comes Marvel’s first TV series. “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” is produced by ABC Studios and Marvel Television.

@blackandyellow I agree regarding the average person. But for the millions that saw The Avengers, they should know.

hunh I agree, that's not the best idea...why no Call to Action on it? seems like a wasted of an opportunity.

I guess they are striking while it's hot but I would have waited till after Phase 3 before doing this. But I do like they are tying the movies and tv shows together. I hate how they don't do that with Arrow.

Also would have left Coulson dead. This will make his death in Avengers worthless. Also need someone with more gravitas than Clark Gregg. The guy is a supporting actor not a leading man.

Perfect. It will cause people to look for the meaning. That's what you want. Not the cliché call to action junk. This is not a wasted opp, it's spot-on.

It's a called a TEASER billboard. The cryptic nature of it will cause buzz, and more than likely the billboard will be updated or changed as the premiere date approaches, not unlike a movie website.

Marvel and Disney certainly have the money to "waste" on marketing like this -- so I don't see how this is a missed opportunity for a call to action.

@CaptainFuryAgent

it will what??? it will cause people to research a symbol?? If there is a subliminal message encoded that plants a suggestion in their brains? maybe. Otherwise, that's simply not true. I work in Marketing and you can hand people a Call to Action with a promotion incentive attached and you'll never get a 100% response rate........whereas this? 'gives them no incentive or indicator that it's even for a TV show vs. movie vs. book vs. political campaign vs. who know!?. .............. No, this is easily ignored is what it is. Maybe Marvel got the offer for a free bit of ad space and this is all they could throw together on short notice.

@NoAssemblyReqd

Mystery doesn't cause buzz!!! how would somebody get buzz from this? you'd have to assume they take a pic and research the pix or post it and find out more on it from a Friend telling them perhaps? that's a hell of an assumption.

That said? I agree 100% that Disney more than has enough cash to do any Marketing (ineffective or not) that they so choose.

"It's a called a TEASER billboard. The cryptic nature of it will cause buzz"

That's completely correct.Look at something like Cloverfield, which had a TON of buzz based on all the teaser stuff even a year before the film's release.

That's awesome! With Joss Whedon calling the shots, this show has through the roof potential.

Damn... R.I.P. Jim Kelly.

@BoatsnHOES I was more thinking Treadstone with the author of this article being Jason Bourne. ;P

@69ballZdeep Even on a Marvel article you troll about MOS? You are persistent, I'll give you that.

@write(butWRONG)333:
Marketing in Podunk, USA does not equal advertising campaign for major media. Bottom line: the PROFESSIONALS that Marvel, thus Disney, thus ABC deployed for this show have decided that this is phase 1 of their campaign. I agree with them and not you. I could see if S.H.I.E.L.D. were not all over MCU Phase One, or the third most successful movie EVER (Avengers), but they were. So there is, at least, latent recognition in their generalized target audience. But there is probably HIGH brand recognition in their specific target audience. So they are strong enough to go clandestine and minimalist to start.

I majored in Journalism and Advertising/Mass Communication and have worked for NBC (network-level entertainment)in NYC, Nickelodeon, PBS, and created my own show three different times, two airing in 26 million homes. So don't presume to lecture me in advertising. The pros at Marvel/Disney/ABC are right.
