CLOAK AND DAGGER Showrunner Talks About Season One Finale And Teases What To Expect In Season Two

Tonight was the finale for the first season of Marvel's Cloak and Dagger. The episode finally saw Tandy and Tyrone become the heroes they were meant to be, working together to fight for New Orleans against the rising darkness. With a packed storyline and big reveals, the finale provided us with some big changes for our main characters that help set up next year's second season.

In an interview with ComicBook.com, showrunner Joe Pokaski noted that he hopes to make a hundred episodes of the show. As the writer for tonight's finale and a major Spider-Man fan, it meant a lot to Pokaski that he was able to pay homage to Spider-Man with his own spin on the classic "with great power" line:

I love the fact that I could do that. Listen, I'm a Spider-Man guy at heart, like Tandy and Tyrone. And it felt like such a good line and also such a good commentary on American corporate greed.

As expected, tonight saw O'Reilly's transformation into Mayhem. After being gunned down by Connors and getting blasted with Roxxon darkforce matter, she is revealed in a post credits scene to have been revived with powers of her own. This origin for Mayhem is changed from the comics, something that Pokaski did in order to tie her abilities to those of Tandy and Tyrone:

Yeah, we liked the idea of putting them on the same power spectrum for lack of a better word. Particularly for the next season, but yeah I think the idea that there's something inside the cloak that was so exciting and something we couldn't have tackled in season one kept it grounded so it was something we were happy to kind of keep locked in and explore next season in a cool way I think.

It is clear that with Roxxon out of the picture for the time being, Mayhem will be one of the main threats and challenges that Tandy and Tyrone face next season. According to Pokaski, Mayhem's approach to vigilantism will have an effect on the moral compass of our two heroes and impact how they approach helping others.

I think Tandy and Tyrone were thrust into the heroic role in season one whether they liked it or not. Thrust into each other's arms to some degree. Literally, I guess, at the end. And she's choosing to do the right thing. Now you know you can do the same. Do you choose to become a vigilante? What kind of vigilante do you want to become? If they cross paths with Mayhem, how does her vigilantism help them decide what's right and what's wrong in the real world when you want to make change? So Tandy and Tyrone are a little more active. They're looking to do well and because it's our show, that's gonna be accomplished.

Pokaski is certainly very passionate about the characters and excited about where Cloak and Dagger is heading next season. Did you enjoy tonight's finale? Be sure to share your thoughts about the finale, first season, and what you hope to see in season 2!

A pretty solid finale for a solid season; nothing special but an alright, decent season. For me, a 7.9/10. I hope that next season they really embrace the powers of the characters. So far they have taken the minimalistic approach to Tandy and Tyrone's powers, but the darkforce has already been handled on screen so the blueprint for really expanding the visuals and extent of the powers is there.

Whatever the big threat may be next season, I hope that they do a better job of investigating the 'villain' than this year. They could have really done a lot with Roxxon and all of the shady stuff the company does but instead got bogged down in a pretty simplistic plot narrative in order to focus on time devoted to Tandy not wanting to be a hero or Tyrone trying to avenge his brother. I hope next season is a bit more focused.

That being said, there were some nice easter eggs tonight ("the Starks and Rands" was sweet, 616, "should have stayed in New York") and it was nice to finally see the two heroes working together in the real world. For me, the best character this season was Tyrone and his speech tonight was well done. Mayhem's introduction was nice too and I hope they keep that time moving effect for her, though if I'm being honest, Connors shooting her amid all the chaos in the city felt... out of place and forced a little.

@HeavyMetal4Life - "Connors shooting her amid all the chaos in the city felt... out of place and forced a little."

Funny, imo shooting her during the chaos makes a cover-up, if needed, easier. The death get lost in the huge mass of other violence and deaths.

@JDL - well yes, it works for a cover up. But it was kind of a "seriously, right now" moment. Idk, it just felt weird to me.

@HeavyMetal4Life - From her perspective "seriously, right now?!"
From his perspective "I couldn't have asked for a better situation to get away with murder."

This show is great though the saving the day bit was the only part I didn't like and I'm sure 99% of that is because the music started blaring which was imo too early for it and took away from what was happening

@Ace006 - lol it started playing like it was the climax of an anime season finale. Except an anime would be reprising its theme song, not "come Saile Away".

@ScionStorm - It was weird and I don't think they pulled it off as well as I think they were hoping

@Ace006 - Agreed about the music. "Come Sail Away"?? What a bizarrely happy choice for what's supposed to be a tense moment.

Not the strongest finish, but a pretty great season overall. The characters and leads are gripping and likable. Hopefully in season two we get more Cloak and Dagger, rather than Cloak or Dagger. Also, let's get this romance going already.

@Spock0Clock - Gotta wonder about the romance. There is an element in the Black Community that gets its panties in twist over Black Male/White Female pairings. Their feeling is that they portray black women as inferior. I know the characters predate this botion but these days it doesn't seem to matter.
Spock0Clock
Spock0Clock - 8/3/2018, 1:53 AM
@JDL - That's true (and the panty-twisting isn't exactly unwarranted, either). But the solution isn't to avoid the subject altogether. Maybe if the Danny/Misty thing gets going that could soothe some of those tensions.

Forty years ago, an African-American man and a white woman was a statement in fiction. White men with non-white women had a whole unfortunate subtext to it, so flipping that formula was to some degree an intentional provocation.

But decades of repetition and the power of that statement is almost entirely gone, and now we've got a whole new subtext to deal with from the relative absence of women in color (particularly as desirable romantic partners) in media... It's not a great place to be in. I am sympathetic to it. But I hope they don't make Cloak and Dagger pay for it.

@Spock0Clock - I'd rather have their romance tossed in a slowcooker and mature over 20 or so hours of television. I want to see it blossom and feel like their relationship have history to its worth and that means exploring why being in relationships with other people doesn't work as well as them together. FitzSimmons wasn't rushed but their relationship development feels like a crowning jewel to AOS character interplay.

Fun fact: Spider-Man is the only one who's ever managed to escape from Cloak's cloak.

Mayhem power check in:
Her powers in comics include a noxious chemical fog that she expels through pores in her body. This chemical causes paralysis when it hits the blood stream and can induce a truth serum hypnotic effect. She uses her razor sharp claws to rend a target to quickly expose their blood to the chemical gas. Oh also

Woah this show aired. I don’t remember any of you talking about it ever.

That show is so insidious. There's something seriously wrong with Marvel if THIS is what they chose to do with these two great characters. Any fan of the original books should reject this mess out of hand.

@ManThing - Could you explain this to someone who likes the show but never read any of the Cloak and Dagger comics
JDL
JDL - 8/3/2018, 5:08 PM
@ManThing - You want the comics then by all means go and read them. TV is another animal Some stuff from the comics doesn't translate well, some stuff is inappropriate. But to expect no changes is asinine.
JDL

Never read the comics. Assuming they reflect them have we gotten all the powers for the two mains ? Was there anything added that wasn't in the comics ?

I loved the series as a whole, but the finale felt very rushed. I felt like parts were missing. Where was Ivan when the terrors attacked Mina's place? What happened to Mina? Are Dagger's light daggers killing the infected? How was Cloak dispatching them? How did Evita know about the church? What idiot thought that a terrible cover of Come Sail Away fit the climax moment?
