Marvel's CLOAK & DAGGER Breaks A Ratings Record And Becomes Freeform's Biggest Series Debut In Years

Despite being in a period where comic book adaptations and superhero media have become immensely popular and hugely successful, time has shown that they are not guaranteed hits. Within the realm of television alone, we’ve seen huge misfires like Marvel’s Inhumans. However, unlike the panned ABC program, the numbers for the premiere of Cloak & Dagger show that Freeform has managed to successfully take advantage of the superhero craze.

In fact, the Marvel drama proved to be more than just a success as it managed to be the network’s most watched program since the series finale of Pretty Little Liars, which is easily one of the most popular shows in Freeform’s history.

Furthermore, Cloak & Dagger managed to break a network record as it earned the title of being Freeform's best digital debut with 716,000 starts. This massive number helped the show gather an impressive "7.3 million views across linear and digital platforms" over the course of three days. And with an impressive 78%, the series earned the largest Live+3 day bump of any Freeform debut.

In all, we are looking at a pretty big success if Freeform and Marvel manage to maintain these kind of numbers.

Now, what do you folks think of this achievement? Do you think Cloak & Dagger deserves these numbers? Make sure to comment below.

I enjoyed it but when are writers/producers/directors going to learn that we want to see more "power-use". It's great that they want to flesh out characters as much as possible and make them more relatable, but please let's have far more visuals of them working their powers. If I just wanted teen drama I'd head off to one of the "13 Reasons Why" type shows. Powers man! It's where it's at....

@happypsycho - It's called having a budget, without knowing how many people are going to watch, first seasons of shows have smaller budgets to reduce the risk if it fails. Look at Game of Thrones, has possibly the largest budget for any TV show in history, and it didn't start with a budget that high, if it has, the viewership of the first season would have gotten it cancelled.

@happypsycho - The Gifted and C&D prob wanted to be differ by toning down the powers and costumes. CW is already too cartoony like saban's old power ranger series. I think they want to aim for a wider appeal beyond comic book fans by making it more grounded and realistic.

@happypsycho - disagree, I am blown away by how good this show is and the powers are definitely second to the story. This show is a solid win so far

@happypsycho - I agree, us comic guys want more powers and more visuals. But its true its really a matter of budget and target audience, unfortunately. They wanna hit a larger audience with some mellow teeny whiney crap instead of hardcore nerds-only action. Its a tough call on the development side.

It means people are tuning in to give it a chance. And that is good.

@newmutantsRETURNS - I hardly watch cable anymore, but back before they rebranded, I liked to have it playing on a lazy day for the late '90s/ early '00s sitcoms and Harry Potter marathons.

@newmutantsRETURNS - This whole article is about the show breaking ratings records - so I think ACTUALLY a lot of people did indeed watch the show. Your premise is kinda null and void. Do try not to be a hater, its a little sad really. Have fun :)

Yeah, I set up the DVR after watching ep 1.

I def like where it’s going.
Which I really didn’t think I would.
I was expecting a lot more teen-angst fluff.

I was surprised on how much I enjoyed it. I really liked how in the opening Bill Mantlo and Ed Hannigan got their names in the opening minutes of the show.

Its not bad but its so slow moving that my old fogey biases have time to kick in. I like the bad girl approach to Dagger but Cloak seems all over the place.

Does anyone one know what the goal is beyond simple survival ?
