THE MANDALORIAN: Timothy Olyphant's Role Has Been Revealed, And He'll Be Wearing Boba Fett's Armor!

We found out over the weekend that Timothy Olyphant (Justified, Deadwood) has joined the cast of The Mandalorian Season 2, and now the character he'll be playing has been revealed. More past the jump...

It was recently reported that the upcoming second season of The Mandalorian had added Timothy Olyphant in an undisclosed role, and we now have some intriguing new details on the character he'll be playing in the Disney+ Star Wars series.

According to /Film, the Deadwood actor filmed scenes for the show while wearing Boba Fett's iconic armor. Does that mean it'll be Olyphant taking on the role of the fan-favorite bounty hunter and not Temuera Morrison as previously indicated? Well, no - and Expanded Universe fans have most likely guessed why.

Olyphant is actually playing a character named Cobb Vanth who was introduced in Chuck Wendig’s Aftermath series of novels. In those books, Vanth was the self-appointed sheriff of a Tatooine-based settlement known as Freetown. He acquires Fett's Mandalorian armor from a group of Jawas who scavenged the wreckage of Jabba the Hutt’s sail barge following the events of Return of the Jedi.

We have no idea how Vanth will factor into season 2 of The Mandalorian, but it's probably safe to assume that with Boba Fett still breathing, he's going to want his armor back at some point!

We're not taking this as a certainly just yet, but /Film has been spot on with their Mandalorian scoops thus far, so we have no reason to doubt this latest report.

What do you guys think? Does Cobb Vanth sound like an exciting addition to what's already shaping up to be a jam-packed season?

Nice! I'm excited to see the second season's additions to the cast. It seems to be rounding out to potentially top Season One.

Well of course boba fett will want his armor back. But his attempt will lead to him getting hit in the head, leading to a series of prat falls that will somehow lead to him ending up back in the sarlacc.

Thought adding Boba was a bit boring on-paper, and while this doesn't inherently wipe that off the table, it's DEFINITELY a much more interesting premise

Still, really wishing I wasn't learning so much about what was gonna be in Mandalorian S2 before actually seeing it. I felt like part of the allure of S1 was how little I knew going in

@TheJustinHammer - Haha because he's a boring character? But that's just opinion of course

@TheJustinHammer - If I have to read a book to make a movie character interesting, the writers failed, dude

@Dredd97 - That's not the same thing. It's "Expanded universe" meaning the characters writing has been expanded, and has way more depth. This stuff came out after return of the jedi, so it's not trying to fix anything.

huh, so they're straight-up adapting stuff from other SW media, interesting.

The Robert Rodriguez episode has to be this. An episode starring Boba, which begins with Fett escaping from the Sarlacc and ends with Cobb Vanth dead and Fett complete.

Olyphant is gonna f*cking own that role.

I'm sort of torn about how much Boba Fett and Fett adjacent stuff we're seeing. I quite enjoyed watching the Mandalorian explore the non-Fett Mandalorian lore, but the thrust of the show was much more centered on the fallout of the Empire collapsing, the state of bounty hunting, and the Child. It had everything I always wanted in a Boba Fett solo, while also pushing on into its own interesting story.

I'm a little afraid it's going to get too fixated on seeing folks in that slick-as-[frick] helmet. Possibly diluting the effect it has on screen.

@Spock0Clock - I think Fett retuning only works if he’s there for an episode; or two at the most.

Mando on a simple bounty grab and then Fett surprisingly somehow becomes involved.

@Spock0Clock - This 100%

@Spock0Clock - I agree, although hopefully they’ll keep it light. The other Mandalorians in the first season didn’t kill the helmet’s effect.

I wonder, though, if they’re going to set up “factions” of Mandalorians. You have Boba Fett, which is a fake Mandalorian altogether, as apparently his dad just took up the armor like this Cobb Vanth character does. Then you have ‘real’ Mandalorians like Sabine from Rebels and Katie Sackoff’s character who never hesitated to take off their helmets. And then you have the lead character, Din Djarin (had to look that up), who follows “The Way”. So I could see a theme developing over what it really means to be a Mandalorian.

Well that seems unnecessarily overcomplicated.

or like they wrote themselves into a corner with some shitty book.

@Nebula - We're going to get a live-action Star Wars version of this, aren't we?
