A Wonder Woman film has been in development hell for years. Having never even seen the light of green, recent news says she'll get a TV show on the CW. She WAS set to appear in the cancelled Justice League movie years ago, but would've been played by a model. Personally, that's enough reason for me to believe that she shouldn't get her own adaption, if we can only think of her as eye candy. In reality, shes the opposite of eye candy, and that's what I'd like to discuss.

The movie, Night of the Living Dead, was seen as a major civil rights allegory. George Romero wrote the lead role for a white man, but chose Duane Jones (a black man) because he was the best actor in town. That movie is one of the best horror films ever made. They didn't go for a crowd pleasing actor, or an actor who the public would've been fawning over, they went with the actor that was best fitted for the role. Christopher Nolan has a history of not giving two craps about what the public wants, and chooses the actors that he sees as best fit. Just ask Nolanites.

So why can't the same be done with Wonder Woman? The main reason, above all else, is because shes female. Females in CBMs have a history of being thought of as eye candy. Even Black Widow, though she admittedly turned out well. We as comic book fans, see Wonder Woman as a strong female warrior. But the general public, thinks of Wonder Woman as Megan Fox. This may just be grouped with all the other ignorances of the general public, but characters like Batman and Superman are thought of as these really cool guys who will always save the day. This is why a Wonder Woman adaption should advertise and cater to feminism.

What do you think of, when you think of Catwoman? You probably get an automatic hard on, right? Wrong. Comic book fans know that Catwoman is more than eye candy. Shes a bit of a foil to Batman. Batman believes in justice at all turns, where as Catwoman is a jewel thief (though still takes part in heroics). Pitof, the man who made the Catwoman movie, had eye candy in mind when he cast Hallee Berry in the lead role. I bet he couldn't wait to see her in the skimpy outfit. Hallee Berry even said that the movie was made for hardons. Catwoman is thought of as one of the worst movies in CBM history.

Wonder Woman is the feminist hero. She comes from an island of all female warriors. She travels to the world of men to declare peace. She was probably sexualized somewhat when first arriving in America, but earned respect and honor like any superhero. She is one of the most prominently known members of the Justice League, and there are ample reasons for it. But the biggest reason is because she is a female who can hang with the other heavy hitters. That's not to say that any woman superhero couldn't, but she MADE a name for herself.

Admittedly, I prefer her pre-new 52 look, because I'm not a big fan of the pants. But in the real world, she wouldn't be taken seriously without pants. She would just be zeroed down to eye candy. And even more than that, feminists would have a field day protesting against it. Does that mean she can't show any skin at all? No. Just no naughty scenes. If you don't have feminists on your side, there's a high chance you won't have the general audience.

Personally, I'd love to see a Wonder Woman movie, just like any DC character. But if we can't respect and understand the character, why make a movie about her?

Leave a comment if you'd like, but try to be respectful.

WW can be an amazing film, even mind blowing!

So much good and rich source to use... yeah forget TV, need a budget and imagination like the THOR movie did and you have a winner right there! ;)

WW could be out of this world!

If she did only come to TV again best place is to go a different way than what they did at NBC.

What about her kingdom come outfit? It really looks awsome and I think it was used on the JLU series when there was a funeral or something? If they used it they woul also get Ros of the stars that actually would look terrible on a movie

@ original OP, I applaud you sir, great article, you are a man after my heart.

Although I do have a few disagreements.

1. I don´t think you need to make Wonder Woman a feminist film, if they stick to the source material its all subtly interwoven in the story anyway. What we need is a great script/adaptation and of course as you mentioned, no bloody models, she´s a complicated character and we need an actress who can capture Diana´s humanity.

@manofsuperguy and knight of steel - and this is an answer to all you guys.
Manofsuperguy - I think the outfit you picked is really good. But on the other hand I agree with Knight Of Steel. One, these are superheroes, whoevers costume it is whether its Superman Batman spider man or the Hulk, none of us would be caught dead wearing them this side of Halloween. Its part of the fantasy element of the genre.

Here´s the puzzling thing the people who mainly complain about WW costume are not women, it´s mostly men. When WW was declared a feminist icon, she was wearing pretty much the same thing she wears now. Women in general seem to have no problem with it. I think the men who say she needs a different costume are just ones who are trying to be politically correct and appear socially enlightened, but I think we should let women speak for themselves if they have a problem with what she is wearing.

I think WW appeals to everyone. People just need to be reminded. If you watch the animated film it dealt with gender issues in a fair and humorous manner, so I think that should be the approach taken to the material. One that both men and women can get into.

Yeah the Kingdom Come outfit is great. But I think if i were to write a film, I´d have her in her normal costume, until the final battle when she´s getting serious, then I´d kit her up like that, it would have more of an impact that way.

She should be treated as a hero. A Soldier and Peacemaker. If you can't make a complex and interested character with just these two thing then don't bother to write. Add that and a nice dash of Greek Fantasy and your Golden.

There is no need to make her Rosie the Riveter unless it adds to the story.

As far as costumes go. I would like to see her geared up like Russel Crow in Gladiator (I know its Roman but that custom would be perfect for her). Give her some old school armor.

Actually I think that if you make the theme of a Wonder Woman movie anything to do with gender, you have already failed.
We don't get Superman films about the fact that he's a guy. Even though he has the word "Man", in his name.
She's an Amazan. Not a feminist. Make a film about her. Not about her gender.

And if you're thinking "But Amazons are feminists", well that's just like saying "All men are sexist".

"And if you're thinking "But Amazons are feminists", well that's just like saying "All men are sexist".
Thats got to be the stupidest, most illogical statement I´ve ever heard. I think your right about what you said before, but expressing it like that makes you sound pretty silly.
There are inherent feminist themes in WW, and I think they´re worthy of exploration in a film as long as the film doesn´t linger on them and as long as they are explored in an interesting or thematic way as oppossed to preaching feminist ethics to the audience.

I prefer a movie.

aresww3@ I was thinking that, when I was typing. There are even inherent feminist associations with the mythological amazons. But what I meant was that an Amazon does not neccesarily have to be feminist. Amazons are people, too. They can have their own thoughts about things. I just think that it shouldn't be the focus at all. It's detrimental. Maybe a little subtext and maybe not even in the first movie.
A Wonder Woman movie in the modern era needs to distance itself from the previous feminist interpretations as much Tim Burton's Batman movie distanced itself from the camp and goofy cartoonishness of the '60s TV show and '40s and '50s comic-books.

They should aim for the same masses who have paid millions to see other movies with strong female leads; Terminator 1 & 2, Aliens, Serenity, Xena, Sucker Punch, Grind House, La Femme Nikita... all of these movies/tv shows had excellent and fun stories first, then it just so happened the lead character(s) were female. You had good male support roles, but the women took charge and kicked butt.
