Anya Taylor-Joy Talks NEW MUTANTS, Possibly Confirming Demon Bear And... James McAvoy

Anya Taylor-Joy is rumored to star in Fox's New Mutants, where she'll be playing Colossus' sister, Magik. In a new interview, she not only namedrops Demon Bear but may have confirmed James McAvoy as well.

While doing press for her upcoming psycho-horror film, Split, which also incidentally co-stars James McAvoy, The Witch breakout actress Anya Taylor-Joy reaffirmed a previous New Mutants rumor that Demon Bear was the film's antagonists  "I have [seen the Demon Bear animatic], it’s pretty cool.  I’m a big fan so I’d love to be a part of it. I can’t say very much, but I would love to be a part of it. I think this year’s gonna be very exciting.

When asked if she'll be reuniting with her Split co-star in the film, Taylor-Joy replied, "I mean, I think James is already a part of it, isn’t he?"  We didn't know that, but we certainly are weighing the possibility now (depending on how you interpret Anya's remarks).

Previously, a leaked animatic and rumor confirmed Josh Boone's film as adapting parts of Bill Sienkiewicz and Chris Claremont's Demon Bear Saga and reported that Fox was in the process of negotiating with Taylor-Joy to play Magik,  Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) to play Wolfsbane and Nat Wolf (Paper Towns, Death Note) to play Cannonball.  Previous rumors also stated that Alexandra Shipp's Storm would be a member of the team, along with Brianna Hildebrand's  Negasonic Teenage Warhead.

Shadowcat's pet dragon Lockeed also appeared in the leaked animatic so there are rumors that Ellen Page may join the cast as well, though how that would work from a chronological standpoint is a headscratcher.

McAvoy is Back?!
Yes Sir!

@IronGenesis - Yes sir indeed. Your comment made me think that McAvoy could play a pretty good Bond villain...

Josh Boone seems like the right guy for the job, so i hope this is good. Although i already have a negative bias because of my hate for Simon Kinberg and his inevitable involvement in this flick.

@TheManWithoutFear - No need to worry. Kinberg will just be a name asdoilciated with the project. Boones already write his own script several times. I have no fear.

@TheRationalNerd - Yeah you're right. But you just know that if it's good then ol' Kinberg will spring out of the woodwork and start doing press like it's his baby.

@TheManWithoutFear - Has Kinberg actually done that, though? The dude deservedly doesn't even get lauded for his Days of Future Past script - all that goes to Bryan Singer who I remember said reworked the script to make it more character driven. Plus, Kinberg rewrote Singer's original Apocalypse script... the one he teased on Instagram.

@TheManWithoutFear - Lol, great guy but he doesn't know the X-Men at all. I don't know if it was Singer's idea or his idea but having Angel debut in the 80s and claim that DoFP allowed mutants to be born earlier doesn't make sense at all. If that was the case Angel should've been 10 years old in Apocalypse. The Phoenix was lazily introduced and they still have yet to show how the Shi'ar empire played a huge role in her first full debut. He loves Star Wars way more and he should proudly exit.

@CutlockCrew - That depends on how you feel about DOFP. I disliked it immensely.

@CutlockCrew - DoFP wasn't even fully his script though. Matthew Vaughn stated that DoFP was basically 90% of his script treatment that he wrote out for it. Singer brought along the X2 writers just for story ideas for Apocalypse and that's sad.

@TheManWithoutFear - @TheRationalNerd - I rationalized the Angel situation as Warren Worthington II (his father) as having had become Angel instead. Also, I get why you may dislike Days of Future Past as a cbm (I feel it perfectly captures the thematic feel of the 80s Claremont comics) but I do think it's one of the better SF films that we've gotten in a while and one of the best time travel movies.

TheRationalNerd is right about Kinberg being less involved on DOFP. But it was Goldman who wrote Vaughn's draft, and then Kinberg who retooled that for Singer.

I'm fairly certain the X2 writers did write the original draft of Apocalypse, but to bring it down to the $180 million budget they had Singer got Kinberg to completely rework the script (which is why those other guys only get story credit). Given that they had the 2016 deadline to hit, I'm certain that Singer's heart just wasn't that in Apocalypse - hence the dead marketing campaign.

@TheManWithoutFear - Kinberg wrote DoFP, which is phenomenal. He also supervised the script and production of Deadpool, and look how that turned out. I'm assuming his involvement here is the same as Deadpool.

I suppose you can't get away with not having McAvoy, but i've never cared too much for his Xavier and would be happier if they recast, which they almost certainly won't.

Chris Claremont is the poor man's Paul Levitz.

Off topic, but I just got around to reading Tom King's Vision. I highly recommend it to anyone that wants to read a superhero story that doesn't necessarily involve superheroics. Tom King is already one of the best writers in comics after just a few titles.

@blackandyellow - good to hear. Vision might be my favorite Avenger. Is Wanda totally out of his life?

This is good news with Hugh considering playing Wolverine again. Id like to see X-men Apocalypse continued. The Young cast was great and really deserve a chance to play Superheroes. Hope they get a good director. And Sophie Turner gets to play Jean Grey again

@Jayman - I really enjoyed the new intorduced cast. (Personally I would have done a reboot beginning with the Deadpool film, ending the current series with Logan; which would be a greta end). But if they continue I wont be mad.

I only wish they had set Deadpool in the 90s. That way they could set the future x-men films in the 90s, allowing Deadpool to interact with them. From then on they could have the successive films progress in "real time" through the 90s. One thing ive enjoyed about the "past" films is the use of the time periods; it just makes the film stand out when compared to the other superhero films set in modern era (which arguably get boring as they always use modern tech like "GPS tracking" or something)

I take her comment more as ''isn't he a part of the xmen franchise already?' as opposed to confirming that Xavier is in new mutants.

@joppida - That's what it seems like. Kind of "he's in the movies, why wouldn't he be in this one?"

@CutlockCrew - right

Also there's no confirmation of demon bear

Just that she has seen the animatic and thought it was cool
