Simon Kinberg Offers Update On NEW MUTANTS And The Final WOLVERINE Movie

Simon Kinberg talks here about where things currently stand on Josh Boone's New Mutants as well as whether they're any closer to getting that third and final Wolverine movie into production.

The announcement of a New Mutants movie came pretty much out of nowhere, but with the current X-Men trilogy coming to an end next year, Bryan Singer moving on to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, and Hugh Jackman bidding farewell to Wolverine, Fox need to find new ways to keep this franchise alive. Here, Simon Kinberg offers an update on what sounds like very big plans for the Josh Boone helmed release as well as shedding some light on the ongoing development of Wolverine's final adventure. As always, let us know your thoughts on these comments below...

On The Current Status Of Josh Boone's New Mutants:

I don’t know what the production plan is. Like with all of these things, we have to get the script right. That’s the most important part of it, and they’re just working on the first draft now, but the hope is that we’ll shoot it soon. And Josh has been game with this and gave us this incredibly elaborate presentation about New Mutants. He’s a huge comic book fan and grew up loving and reading specifically New Mutants, so he came with a whole movie presentation where he laid the film out and it was really cool.

On Where Things Stand With The Final Wolverine Movie:

We’re pretty close to a script that everyone’s excited about, and I don’t know when the start date is, but we won’t start until it’s ready to shoot. What Hugh said to you is the attitude we all have—myself, Lauren Shuler Donner, the studio, [director] James Mangold, Hutch Parker—all of us, feel like this is six or seven or eight (depending on how you count) movies in the making, and there are few characters in the history of cinema who have cast as big a shadow as Wolverine, so to tell the final chapter of that story, it has to be the best, and it has to have a mythic quality to it. So we have to get it right, and I think we will, and my experience working with Jim Mangold, I’ve been extraordinarily impressed with him. He’s just a really great storyteller; he’s incredible with character. Really diligent, just a special talent. I have very high hopes for that movie.

On The Storyline They're Adapting For The Third Wolverine:

I can’t talk about what it is, but I will say that in its essence it’s something that Hugh has been excited about for a while, and something James Mangold is incredibly excited about, and the two of them together is a pretty neat thing to watch having made a movie together, and I thought they made a pretty good one. They just have a shorthand fluency and trust. It’s really nice to watch.

I wonder what an Xmen movie without Lauren Shuler Donner and Bryan Singer would be like....

The guys from beer fest would say it best...

Landfill: "It's magical."
Fink: "It's laughing at me."
Barry: "I wish I could brush my teeth with it."
Landfill: "I wanna put my d*ck in it."
Fink: "I want it to put its d*ck in me."
Barry: "I wish it were winter, we could make it into ice blocks and skate on it. And then melt it in the springtime and drink it."

Old Man Logan.

@KidGoku - I like it very much. Except for the Silver Samurai, that was really bad. I don't know they used the old Yashida as the main antagonist.

@GliderMan

"The problem with Wolverine 3 is that no one wants it."

Gliderman, I assure you that the final Wolverine movie will surpass the box office of the previous 2 movies and that will show that a lot of people wants it...

Even when the script of those movies is not the best we cannot deny the charm that Jackman has have to Logan... you can never get enough of his wolvie!

I would love a Weapon X Movie... based on the marvel presents comics by Barry Windsor smith but that would need to be Rated x!

Incredibly nice, approachable guy. Conversed with him a few times in the 'X-Verse' site 10 years ago before X3 came out. However, this is the same guy who, not so long ago, was singing FF4's (and its since delayed sequel's) praises. Nothing to see here.
And, no, I couldn't give 2 $hits if X-Men or the FF go back to the MCU.

@GliderMan Unfortunately, there is a large portion of the movie going population that will and have paid to see these crappy movies who:
A: Are kids and will see anything
B: Don't care about quality, just flash
C: Are dicks and spoil the chances of getting a real X-Men movies for the real fans of the X-Men

I respect what Kinberg is trying to say but he needs to lay off the hyperbole a lot. Wolverine is barely a blip in the history of cinema and the his cinematic adventures are pretty forgettable unfortunately.

I doubt Fox will ever give up rights for Xmen. All we can hope for is new directors, writers and producers that know how to make a CBM movie and not a soap opera.

The Wolverine 3 is extremely high on my anticipation list. The Wolverine is one of my favourite CBMs. Mangold did a great job with the character. My only request, bring back Yukio! She was pure badass!

New Mutants could be a very refreshing movie. Boone is talented, and is a massive fan. This is where I want to see Cable debut, played by Dominic Purcell.

Good to hear. I've got it tied for 3rd with DOFP, right behind Winter Soldier and the GOAT, Blade II.

Deadpool will likely force my to change my list, as it looks to be the best thing ever made in the history of film.

I really don't want the X-Men in the MCU. They're big enough for their own movie universe, it just needs to be done right. With the way things are now I've arranged myself with just being content with hoping for good individual movies. What we hear about Boone and the New Mutants sound promising!

As for Wolverine... well, he's been one of my two favourite comic book characters for the bigger part of my younger years, and his solo movies are among the few CBMs I didn't watch on the big screen. I'm curious as to what they're planning with the last one, and if it looks good I'll go watch it, but so far I'm less than hyped about it.

Just cant see Old Man Logan working without the characters used in the Comic. Can't see it and and don't want to see it.

How good was Mad Max? Realllll Good.

Without the characters needed, this would be a shitty "end of the world/apocalyptic" version of Mad Max. I'm not into a half assed OML.
