THE NEW MUTANTS Director And Star Explain Why The Team Wouldn't Be A Good Fit For The MCU

The New Mutants director Josh Boone and star Charlie Heaton have shared their thoughts on the characters from the movie becoming part of the MCU, and they clearly don't see them as a particularly good fit.

The New Mutants is sticking with its August 28th release date, and while some remain convinced that it will end up debuting on Disney+, there was no mention of that being the case during the movie's Comic-Con@Home panel or in those subsequent release date changes by Disney.

Earlier this week, Screen Rant spoke to director Josh Boone and star Charlie Heaton (Cannonball) about the possibility of The New Mutants becoming part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That's highly unlikely as Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige plans on rebooting the X-Men franchise, but neither man believes it would work anyway!

"It's hard, because I think kind of what Josh is saying, this really feels so in its own world," Heaton says. "It's really hard to see them stood next to [MCU heroes]. They just don't compare. These are kids doing the best with what they have."

Boone added to that, seemingly pointing to his film being distanced from Fox's X-Men movies. "It would be really weird in this movie if Wolverine showed up. They're sort of in their own tonal space, and the aesthetic space is sort of its own thing. So, it'd be weird and interesting to see them kind of with other characters. But to me, if fans love it, we'd certainly love to make another one."

As it stands, The New Mutants will be an entirely standalone adventure, and with early box office forecasts from even before COVID-19 not being great, it's doubtful that it has franchise potential.

So it would've never even connected to the X-Men films then, if they were still going.

After seeing the quality of the first two minutes, I see where he's coming from

The Doctor Strange sequel is supposed to be the MCU’s first horror film, so I could see the characters fitting in there, but not the general MCU.

@mgeoff88 - Illyana in Doc Strange 2 would be awesome!

@DoubleD - And Cable and Domino! Loved Brolin and Beetz as these characters.

@Jackraow21 - I didn't like Cable and Domino was good but she can be replaced too.

@DoubleD - Different strokes for different folks I guess. I loved them both. Thought they did a great job of bringing the characters to life and now I can’t see anyone else in those roles.

I actually think both this and the Deadpool franchise could easily be worked into the MCU, while the main X-men franchise would have been set in an alternate universe and would be rebooted in the MCU. Just my opinion, but it wouldn’t be hard to make New Mutants and Deadpool MCU based.

From that cast Magik is the only one worth keeping.

I am really looking forward to this film. The casting is really good, it's like the original New Mutants created by Claremont and Bob McLeod coming to life. Roberto, Rahne, Illyana ... all spot (no pun intended) on.

I think it’ll probably work best in its own space separate from the MCU- and definitely separate from the mess of continuity that Fox created.

It's almost like these actors haven't even seen an MCU movie.

Because one movie has a really dark tone that means they can never interact? Was every movie going to be set in the same place? Were they going to grow? I'm not against comic book movies being their own thing but weren't they in a shared universe regardless?

When doing crossovers I think the most important part is keeping the essence of the characters not keeping the same tone. The tone doesn't make the movie in my opinion.

But also to say Wolverine of all characters when he's been in all sorts of movies tone wise.

Yea this movie obviously never could because this a movie that The Wuss Master Kevin "No Risk" Feige would never do.

THIS. Idk since when did every cbm have to feel exactly the same.. obviously Wolverines tone isnt going to fit into the MCU, so since he coming anyway does that mean everyone wants Wolverines character to change just to fit into Disney's MCU? cracking corny every 5 seconds, he already cant smoke cigars... We live in a time where everything has to feel the same and everything is extremely PC..

Option A) Just ignore all the New Mutants roster until the MCU mutants aré established then introduce alternate versións of The New Mutants a la JK Simmons as part of the population of the Xavier School, X-Force, X-Factor, Excalibur, District X etc.

Option B) Make some of them Crossover with Deadpool and Cable.

Option C) Adapting Exiles and give closure to the Deadpool characters,New Mutants and X-23 the tone wouldn't matter because would be a movie out of both the MCU and the Fox verses something between, Spiderverse and the Sliders tv show.

IF YOU KNOW HOW TO ADAPT AND WRITE A DAMN GOOD SCRIPT...THE NEW MUTANTS WOULD BE A GOOD FIT FOR THE MCU. LAZY ASS WRITERS WITH LITTLE IMAGINATION !
