THE NEW MUTANTS: First Review Describes The Movie As "Generic" And "[Not] As Scary As It Could Be"

The first review for The New Mutants has been shared by The Hollywood Reporter, and...it's not great! In fact, it doesn't sound like Fox's X-Men Universe will end on the high note many fans hoped...

While many sites have decided against reviewing The New Mutants, one of The Hollywood Reporter's Paris-based film critics has shared their verdict on the Marvel movie, and it's not so good.

They start by explaining that the only way you'll find it an "eye-opening experience" is if you've never seen Buffy the Vampire Slayer, A Nightmare on Elm Street, or an asylum-set psychological thriller. It gets worse, as the trade notes the movie "will provide an eye-rolling case of déjà vu," adding that Josh Boone's take on these characters is "Generic and, at its best, straining to be heartfelt."

"Even the handful of twists meant to be vaguely new, such as a same-sex love affair between two of the heroines, wind up feeling familiar, which is perhaps why Boone actually inserts a clip from an episode of Buffy showing the same thing," the review continues. "The movie isn’t even as scary as it could be, a fact that could be explained by the need to maintain a PG-13 rating, but in the end we’re only reminded of recent teen horror ensembles like It that worked much better."

Praising the performances of the female cast members, it concludes with a, "It’s just too bad the movie that launched them doesn’t have the same impact. As far as the mutant franchise goes, it never makes its last stand."

This is obviously just one person's opinion, but if it turns out to be indicative of the rest of the reviews, it may explain why Disney hasn't held any press screenings.

What do you guys think?

@patgreyc - So far, most of the people I know or I read online who have seen it in France have been saying that they found the film fun to watch and that they like it. Even if this is not a very good horror movie, the film is being hailed as one of the few intimate superheroes movies, something which just seems to click with viewers who really like the characters.

I'm going tomorrow night for my part (I live in France, the situation with the Covid is not the same as it is in the US and we can go relatively safely to the theaters as long as we respect the rules).

@patgreyc -
I guess they thought the novelty factor of a comic book horror movie alone would sell it. They forgot to make it a good horror movie, so it's a generic PG-13 horror movie. Eh...

With all the delays for reshoot you could have blamed it on that, but they never got around to doing the reshoots

Not suprised. The first trailer (which for some reason got everyone excited) looked like as generic jumpscare infested horror movie aimed at teens as you can get.

seriously with the planned reshoot, there was always the possibility this would happen, at least they didnt get the chance to make it worst with reshoots

I'll wait till I see it before I cast judgement...but if it turns out to be a flop...it'll be no big surprise.

A movie that's been sitting on the shelf for years is less than amazing...

Magik was the ONLY THING about this movie that looked cool. The vibe of the footage felt very generic. The trappings were very "we've seen it all before" so you would've had to have added something truly unique to shake things up.

I still would like to know what other reviews say, as well to check the RT score.

Truth to be told no one should really be going to the cinemas. Not even for Tenet. Had to be said.
