Sir Ian McKellen gave us all a scare last night when the news broke that the legendary X-Men and The Lord of the Rings star fell from the stage during a performance of Player Kings at the Noël Coward theatre in London.

Sir Ian - who plays John Falstaff in the production - was said to have been circling a battle scene involving the Prince of Wales and Henry Percy when he lost his footing and fell off the front of the stage. The 85-year-old actor cried out in pain, calling for help, as a staff member rushed to assist him.

According to the BBC's report, the incident happened so quickly that the audience initially thought it part of the performance, but the house lights then came up and staff evacuated the theatre. The next show (tonight, Tues the 18th) was cancelled "so that Ian can rest", and a spokesman then thanked two doctors, Rachel and Lee, who were "on hand in the audience", and staff at the venue for their support.

McKellen was rushed to hospital, but is thankfully expected to make a full recovery.

"Thank you to our audience and the general public for their well wishes following Ian’s fall during this evening’s performance of Player Kings. Following a scan, the brilliant NHS team have assured us that he will make a speedy and full recovery and Ian is in good spirits.

The production his made the decision to cancel the performance on Tuesday 18 June so Ian can rest. Those affected will be contacted by their point of purchase as soon as possible tomorrow. Thank you to doctors Rachel and Lee who were on hand in the audience and to all the venue staff for their support.

McKellen was recently asked about a possible return as Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum movie that's currently in development at Warner Bros., and said he had been told there is "a part for Gandalf" in the film.

"I haven’t shaved in months,” the veteran actor told The LA Times. “But there is no script, there is no offer, there is no plan.” McKellen said that he might be interested, before adding with a chuckle, “If I’m alive.”

De-ageing technology has come a long way since we saw McKellen as a younger Magneto in X-Men: The Last Stand. Depending on the size of Gandalf's role, there's nothing to say he couldn't don the pointy hat and staff one more time.

What do you think? Would you like to see Ian McKellen back as Mithrandir? Drop us a comment down below.

@harryba11zack - I remember a Pitch Meeting from years ago regarding this scene: Gandalf falls, deeper and deeper...only to end up on top of a mountain 😂

@Feralwookiee - There is also, if he had a fracture, at least he could put metal pins in the bones himself

There's gotta be a flat Earth argument in there. If all the world's a stage, and you can fall over the edge, well... you know.

May the absolute gentleman have th most comfortable and swiftest recoveries. Lord knows, he's very well beloved; I'm all but certain he's recieveing the greatest outpour of support and love right now!

@mountainman - Have every novel, most of them signed, amongst a load of other stuff like the maps, diaries, board games etc etc.
I met Terry Pratchett several times, solid dude who was always incredibly friendly, down to Earth and always seemed to remember every fan down to personal details about them, sorely missed and hit me hard when he passed (more so TBH when some family members died).

@Apophis71 - You’ve now impressed me even more. I’m admittedly new into Discworld and have only read the first few volumes. But I love it so far and do plan to keep going.

@thedrudo - According to the BBC article 'He is expected to be back on stage on Wednesday for a matinee performance of the play' suggesting, taking into consideration his age, it was very minor with no underlying medical reasons for the fall detected.

Gave me a bit of a scare hearing the initial report, fractures at that age can turn bad fast and full recovery not a given but sounds like his ego was probably bruised more than he was.

All the same hope he is doing OK and not in too much pain etc and DOES make a full recovery.

I saw him live once when he was doing a benefit night in London for a theatre. Very entertaining and talented actor. He had a few of the props from LotR and got people up on stage taking photos with him. He then did a load of things from his career including Magneto and finished off going through all of Shakespeare’s plays and gave a story about when he might of appeared in the play or quotes from them. In total 2 and half hours on stage and then after which he was on the door shaking a collecting bucket as everyone left, thanking everyone for coming. Top bloke, and very genuine.

This is a great opportunity to make a great meme because he was involved in a fight scene. Someone make this, I'm too busy.

Aragon - You fell.

Gandalf the White - Through fire and water. From the lowest dungeon to the highest peake. I fought him, the Balrog of Morgoth.
