X-MEN: THE LAST STAND Star Kelsey Grammer Reflects On Learning He Was Being Dropped As Beast

Following his shocking return in The Marvels, X-Men: The Last Stand star Kelsey Grammer has looked back on how it felt to learn he'd been dumped from the franchise ahead of 2011's X-Men: First Class...

X-Men: The Last Stand tried to adapt two big comic book storylines with "The Dark Phoenix Saga" and "The Cure," only to ultimately do neither of them justice (a fact that haunted writer Simon Kinberg to the extent he tried again with Dark Phoenix...and failed a second time).

The 2006 movie was a critical and commercial disappointment and, five years later, 20th Century Fox decided to reboot the franchise with X-Men: First Class.

The prequel revisited the formation of the X-Men, meaning everyone aside from Hugh Jackman - who made a brief cameo appearance - was recast. That included Beast actor Kelsey Grammer.

He'd eventually reprise the role for a surprise cameo in X-Men: Days of Future Past, but with Nicholas Hoult taking his place, that seemed to be the end of the road for Grammer. Well, until a shocking return in The Marvels' post-credits scene last November!

With that, the stage has been set for the actor's Beast to become a part of the MCU's Multiverse Saga. While Grammer didn't address that during a recent "Full Comedy Actor Roundtable," he did reflect on how challenging it was to learn he'd been dumped from the X-Men franchise.

"After I just played Beast - my days in Marvel - they came and said, 'We have the most wonderful next film planned...We're gonna go back in time.' And so I suddenly have this sinking feeling of 'Oh so, I won't be in it, so my performance as Beast will not be in it," the actor recalled. "That's what you're telling me'. Sure enough, it went back in time...I was gone!"

Last year, Grammer did weigh in on his unexpected MCU debut. "Beast is a passion for me," he said. "I've always wanted to be a blue person and now I am in film."

Adding that he "certainly hopes" to have a future as the character following his cameo, Grammer noted, "There's been some discussion. I've always wanted to play him again. It's a great feather in my cap now that to have him come back and have people still be interested in seeing who was arguably the greatest Beast ever."

Only time will tell what the future holds in store for Grammer's Beast, though we're expecting the X-Men's world to be revisited in the upcoming Avengers movies instead of a Captain Marvel threequel or Deadpool & Wolverine

Dark Pheonix > The Last Stand, Apocalypse and Wolverine Origins.

@UniqNo - this is Absolutely true. It's also true that Dark Phoenix was pretty bad

@UniqNo - Factually wrong, Dark Phoenix is the WORST

@Brondern -

No, YOU're wrong. It's actually Origins that stands out as the franchise's worst. Story, effects, continuity, you name it.

@UniqNo - Nah, dude. The Last Stand and Apocalypse at least had good performances from the central cast. Beast in TLS and the Quicksilver, Magneto Scenes in Apocalypse are among those. Origins is pretty bad, but Liev Schreiber was excellent as Sabertooth. I am trying to remember something from Dark Phoenix. My mind completely deleted everything from that movie because it is terrible and forgettable.

It's far from perfect, but it to me it was more faithful....Mystique being a leader aside and i really liked the score. The last stand was too overstuffed, failed the payoff that was set up in X2 and Origins was all over the place save a couple scenes, but again, just trying to cram in too much.

I do also beleive Dark Pheonix would have been better if we got the original 3rd act.

@DrReedRichards - It had Hugh Jackman and Liev Screiber in it so it's automatically better

Also Dark Phoenix will always be the worst just because of this clip alone

Turklander - 6/18/2024, 6:19 AM
@UniqNo - Nothing about it was faithful, that movie was complete dogshit, i'd rather watch X-Men Origins Wolverine 10x then watch Dark Phoenix even once. Don't forget about the "X-Women" scene

@Brondern -

I'd take some Lawrence cringe over Logan's CGI claws and Baraka-pool any day of the week, mate. But both flicks are horrendous, I'll give you that.

Also, kinda funny that noone even bothered to reference New Mutants, lol.

@DrReedRichards - I heard a rumor Headpool in Deadpool & Wolverine will be Baraka-pool's head so then at least the pain will be worth it

Also no one watched New Mutants and everyone forgot it even exists lol

@Brondern - Well i prefered it. I'd rather watch that than see Jean kill Scott within the first 10 minutes, or hear vinnie jones copy the youtube juggaurnaut bitch thing.

His Beast is still the best, so I hope gets to return. Maybe as part of a Guardians of the Multiverse with Captain Carter, Kahhori, Deadpool, Wolverine, Photon, Binary, the Spider-Men and Superior Iron Man?
ProfessorWhy
ProfessorWhy - 6/18/2024, 5:17 AM
@bkmeijer1 - the Beast from The Marvels will be integrated into the MCNew after secret wars, is my guess. I'm thinking live action X-men will be shooting for the look and feel of '97

I posted a link on an earlier thread, but none of the editors seem to have picked it up for an article. Good news is that he's expected to have a speedy recovery, from what I last read.

@DrReedRichards - You know that the first thing we all think is 'Oh shit here it comes', so it's good to hear he's recovering.

Now I can make this joke: I guess nobody told him to break a leg, huh? Ba-dum-tsshhh.

He will just return in Secret Wars and probably never show up again

The MCU will make an X-Men reboot with a bunch of unknowns so they can contractually control them for decades
clintthahamster
clintthahamster - 6/18/2024, 7:29 AM
@Brondern - I mean, if they're planning for decades . . . Grammer will be in his early 70s by his next appearance. Probably best to go with someone just a LITTLE bit younger.

The fact that so many people love him in that role, to this day made happy even just hearing him in The Marvels, is always going to be something for him to hold on to. He was an absolutely phenomenal choice, and he crushed it with what little time he had.

Perfect casting! Also the Frasier reboot was alright, they're making improvements for season two like making Roz full time and bringing back the live studio audience
