Brett Ratner Doesn't Care What "Comic Book Geeks" Think

If you're like many comic book movie fans, you were dissappointed with Brett Ratner's stab at the X-Men franchise in X-Men: The Last Stand. Well, if you disliked Ratner before, wait until you hear what he has to say about you and your fellow comic book movie fans:

"When you talk about 'people,' you're talking about comic book geeks. The best advice I got from [X-Men and X2 director] Bryan Singer was: 'Whatever you do, do not read the Internet while making this movie. They were cursing me out the whole time. You can't please everybody, Brett. There's no rules here.'

"I did make rules for myself. I did not want to put one scene in this movie that wasn't existing in a comic book. So they can't say that I made something up - like killing Professor X, which they gave me such shit about, meanwhile he died five times [in the comics]. That comes with the territory.

"All the people who said 'Brett Ratner is the Antichrist and I hope he dies a slow, painful death' are all paying to go see my movie. I don't mind that passion, and I don't agree, but I love a person who's passionate about a comic book character. You gotta give it up for that guy, 'cause he's got nothing else going on in his life. [Laughs] But he's passionate about that, and that's good. That's important. I think that keeps people going."

Well, was he correct? Is everything in X-Men: The Last Stand straight out of the comic books?

What's so wrong with wanting to see a decent film (plot, character development, pacing, etc...) that's true to the original story-line? Does that make me a comic-book geek with "...nothing else going on in [my] life..."? Face it Ratner, your 'interpretation' BLEW and you have no one to blame but yourself! Suck it Brett, you arrogant, eogtistical bastard!

"You can't please everybody, Brett.

Huh, well Ratner pleased no one with this crappy movie! not even non-comic book fans or even critics liked this movie! Still, if the idiot wants to blame us "geeks" for the fact he wouldnt know how to make a decent movie if he tried then who cares, lol!

I actually liked X-Men Last Stand, but Rattners comments are stupid, it’s obvious he has no respect for the public that fallow the characters and made them relevant in the first place.

As for Singer, maybe he should have taken a look on the internet because IMO his X-Men movies were almost as bad as Ratners!!!

I can tell you one thing thats not in the comics... Wolverine IS NOT 6ft 2inches tall!!!, but I guess that is Singers fault... sorry just had to point that out.. I like Hugh but all in all Wolverine is known for being a short badass!!! In truth that was the one thing I could never forgive in all of the films. Maybe I am being pety, but I've been called much worse!!!

I was actually willing to see his point until the highlighted bit! Good stuff Brent;)

I do see were he is coming from i have to say, from one perspective. From another he should just admit that he made a sub par movie and stop being an arrogant prick. The difference between him and Singer is, aside from the changes Singer made, he managed to make one good and one great movie. Ratner cant say the same so he's just bitter and looking to defend himself against us "geeks". Well, i got news for ya fatso, It wasnt just the CMB fans that slated your movie, you show me one 4 star review of X3 and I'll show you a donut you wouldn't enjoy.

The Last stand isnt horrible. But saying a comment like that is just stupid. Its like Tim Burton saying screw you to all the strange teenage goth girls that are his fanbace. Its shooting yourself in the dam foot.

Theres some bits i really enjoyed in X3 but also there was some bits in WOLVERINE i enjoyed too lol, if you put both them movies together you get a good X-movie!

haha, yes sir, its a donut full of shamrocks begorrah!

I didn't hate X3 either, it just failed coming off such a great movie in X2 which managed to combine action and character very well. X3 was too short, too studio [frick]ed with, too many characters with one line of dialog, too much abysmal acting from Halle Berry. Anyone notice how much better she was as Storm in X2? Wonder why that was....

What a tool. My friends who saw The Last Stand with me and who could give a crap whether this was a comic book adaptation or not, laughed out loud at several points during the film.

Ratner: you blew your chance of making one of the best comic book films ever. This should have been EPIC, but it was not even close to the same quality as Singer's films. Dick.

In my opinion--and I consider myself a huge comic book fan, but do not consider that a reason to be classified as a "geek"--Ratner is just opening himself up to even more criticism and fan backlash by saying what he's said. He comes off as a "frat boy" and I can't see how he could be considered for any future comic-related projects. Of course, maybe he realizes that (or it's already been spelled out for him) and he's just trying to make himself look cool by distancing himself from X-Men: The Last Stand.

Furthermore, his statement, "I did not want to put one scene in this movie that wasn't existing in a comic book," is just as egregious as his other statements. This movie was nothing like anything we've seen in established X-Men continuity.
TheMyth
TheMyth - 9/8/2009, 3:37 PM
That is a truth about the film he made, in that 96% of the stuff in the movie was pulled from a comic. Where he failed, and quite miserably I might add, was in combining those instances and also, by using way too many different X-stories. I'm not standing up for this dickhead, as I am part of the crowd that wants to see him hanging from a tree by the neck, but just wanted to throw that all out there.

sith13, I agree that it is a petty issue. It bugs me to an extent too, but nowhere near enough for me to use it as any basis for forming an opinion about the quality of the movies on. So I'd say that is something you should let go of, or it least not allow it to impact your opinion of the movies overall. I justify it like this, they cast a guy who looks reasonably like him, does a great job portraying him, and LOVES to be the character. We would be lucky if every actor had that level of commitment and respect for a character.

Rorsch, LMAO... donut you won't enjoy... *tear*

I dont know, his point seems valid. If someone actually believes he's the antichrist and deserves to die becuase of a movie, they probably dont have anything else going on, I didnt like the movie, and I dont like him, but I dont really care beyond that, because I have other things going on.

X3 isnt bad its just misdirected, its like if you left a child alone with your most precious toys, then found some firecrackers and taped them together, then charged you for the firecrackers and made you watch.

They had a good set up, but they executed it extremely poorly. It just wasn't handled well at all.

Such a tool.

I agree with him up until the last paragraph. Thanks to the internet, the fanboys don't have to spend their dollars watching subpar movies though. So the joke's on him.

I didn't think X3 was BAD. But it wasn't good. He's just being a whining bitch about it.

Yes more of a reason to smack him when I see him. One for this comment and Two for putting the Xmen in the same place that Street Fighter was placed in... The trash. There was so much that could of been down with the franchise, it could of be AMAZING! ONE OF THE BEST ACTION MOVIES EVER! but no.... we got someone who made Cyclops a Bitch and then killed him. I mean Cyclops was a Boy Scot but never a bitch. Juggernaut was weak, he didn't even fight Colossus. ICEMAN DIDN'T EVEN SLIDE TROUGH THE AIR ON ICE! HOW IN THE HELL DONT YOU MAKE THAT SCENE? the only Sentinel you show is the Shadow of a head in he danger room, which you didnt even really highlight on. THE DANGER ROOM? HOW DONT YOU HIGHLIGHT THE DANGER ROOM? I could go on but I wont, since I have much more in my life to do. But never Fear, Masters in Film, Almost complete. I WILL get my hand on a marvel franchise, and show Brett Ratner's how it should be handled or die trying lol.

Ratner is so full of it! Yes, I do think there is perhaps too much crap being said by fans and not enough intelligent debate, and I doubt he's the "Antichrist" because that would give him too much power, but let's face it: his movie has nothing to do with the comics, so his statement is bogus.
