BOX OFFICE: X-MEN: APOCALYPSE Earns $65 Million Domestic In 3-Day Weekend

Perhaps mixed reviews gave pause to would-be ticket purchasers? Either way, the opening weekend domestic haul for Apocalypse has to be disappointing. UPDATE: International numbers are in.

With a 3-day holiday weekend in its corner, X-Men: Apocalypse will only earn $65 million domestically [$78 million across 4-days]. That's a disappointing figure when compared to Batman v Superman's $166 million and Captain America: Civil War's $179.1 million.  This figure is also way down from Days of Future Past's $110.6 million opening weekend gross.

But all is not lost.  The last two X-flicks attributed the bulk of its worldwide box office total to foreign territories.  X-Men: First Class amassed a "41% domestic/59% international" split on its $353.6 million worldwide total.  It's follow up, and Bryan Singer's return to the franchise, Days of Future Past had an even larger divide with a "31% domestic/69% international" division of its $747.8 million worldwide haul.

If Apocalypse is headed for another "30% domestic/ 70% international" split of its revenue and analysts are predicting a $170 million finish for its domestic run, the worldwide box office haul for Apocalypse would come in at roughly $567 million.  Of course, this estimate applies a similar precipitous drop for the film's international totals.  It's entirely plausible that the film's international box office could account for 80-90% of its worldwide gross.

UPDATE: International numbers for Apocalypse are a little more hopeful. The film has earned $55.3 million in its second weekend of international release, bringing its global total to $250.8 million.

@GreenLantern519 - I bet the only thing Fox execs take away from this is that X-Men movies without a big emphasis on Hugh Jackman/Wolverine perform poorly.

@MarkJulian - Just like the only thing they got from Deadpool was that Wolverine 3 needs to be rated R.

.... I mean it does, but that's the last thing they should be taking away from Deadpool's unprecedented success.

Won't make it past $550M. The mixed reviews have damaged its take and TMNT will give it a big dent next week.

@Spodermug - Agree entirely. This movie was lacking in every regard. i think most X-Men fans have had enough of JLaw Men and would like to see a resurgence of the real team.

Go TMNT!
