Kodi Smit-McPhee Talks About His Take On 'Nightcrawler' In X-MEN: APOCALYPSE

Kodi Smit-McPhee talks here about being cast in Bryan Singer's X-Men: Apocalypse as the young Nightcrawler, and shares some details about his take on the character. It sounds like the 18 year old star of Slow West won't be trying to imitate Alan Cumming, but will turn to the comics...

Kodi Smit-McPhee has received a great deal of praise for past roles in movies like The Road and Let Me In, and he's undoutedly one of the most exciting additions to Bryan Singer's X-Men: Apocalypse. The 18 year old will play Nightcrawler in the movie, but when the site asked if he's looking bacl on Alan Cumming's performance in X-2, the youngster was quick to point out that he'll be doing more than just an imitation. "I don’t try to avoid it, and I don’t try to keep it in mind. I just let things come naturally. Because it is the Marvel Universe and X-Men and there are a lot of people expecting a lot of things, I did a huge amount of research on anyone who has portrayed it and even in the comics and the cartoons and live action. I just followed Nightcrawler’s story. I feel very honored and grateful to be expressing that now. I can’t wait." that sounds like the right approach, and one which should comic book fans very happy after Cumming's humourless version.

After revealing that he was always Singer's first choice to play the character, Smit-McPhee went on to talk about why Nightcrawler is being brought back in X-Men: Apocalypse and why the character didn't make a cameo appearance in X-Men: Days of Future Past last year. "I think Bryan said that he thought that it just wasn’t the right time because there were already so many mutants in it and after reading the script now, I can see what they’re doing. They have the ability to bring these younger characters in now, so I think a lot of the people who know the traditional origins of where this came from will be very happy." Could that mean we'll see Nightcrawler interact with his mother, Mystique? As always, share your thoughts and theories on this in the usual place!

He could be perfect for this role, I just hope its not a background role I mean for example look at Warpath in Days of Future Past I'd rather have Nightcrawler have a decent role in this

These comments could literally have been said by anyone about playing any character. Zero content.

@Jeight
"Develop them."

In a Bryan Singer X-Men film?

He should kill it as Kurt. Hopefully, he doesn't end up like Bishop; unless the plot is already good enough.

Technically, it's not the "Marvel Universe"

Cumming's Kurt was awesome! Hopefully, this kid is as good. Of course, he has to get character development and ample screen time for that to happen.

Im actually excited again about the FOXMen they have 3 decent-good movies back to back and now they are bringing in the big dogs. I hope they do more with these characters than have them there just to show them using their powers once and nothing more. We need more emphasis on the personalities and motivations of characters other than Xavier, Magneto, Wolverine and Mystique. As much as I like the character of Mystique She was never this big a part of the X-Men mythos as they tried to make her in the movies. Not only that but they completely butchered her over and over to the point where the only similarities is that she has blue skin and can shape shift.

Wonder if they'll give a nod to Azazel and ole Mystique.

And yeah Cummings nailed the role as Nightcrawler. He had that accent down packed and his conversation with Storm was written with very great dialogue.

I think Cyclops, Storm, Jean, Angel and Kurt will be getting more than table scraps. It sounds like that might be the centre of this franchise once Apocalypse is finished.

I could be wrong but is McPhee referring to time travel as a way for these characters to all be present at the same time?

@MutantWarrior

Do you believe any of these characters are going to make it to present day beyond the core characters. At best, any character introduced in Apocalypse will be in their mid-40's in 2016. I can't imagine a middle-aged Jubilee or Psylocke or an elderly Havok in his 70's. We probably won't see these characters in future movies. Springer is setting up all the core characters to be in their mid-to-late 40's -the same age as the original cast. But he's making the entire X-Men universe smaller by doing so.

But then although FOX has one license when it comes to X-Men -they literally can throw hundreds of mutant characters into their movies to make up for the ones lost. Its such a waste to get one good movie for some characters and then they just disappear lost in time.

I would actually love to see some of these new casted members get their own solo flicks or duo flicks. All depends on how they want to expand things.

Damn I didn't know Fassbender is leaving. This franchise is going to take a big hit after Apocalypse. I wonder how long McAvoy's contract is for...

I gotta think of a way to stay alive for another 50 years.
It may be that long before Marvel gets all their properties back & there can be a TRUE MCU.
