Michael Fassbender's Contract Ends With X-MEN: APOCALYPSE

With the recent news of Wolverine 3 being the last film for Hugh Jackman as his character, Michael Fassbender in a recent interview revealed that X-Men: Apocalypse is the last film under his contract!

It seems as though after Michael Fassbender portrays Magneto in X-Men: Apocalypse, his contract with the franchise will end. In a recent interview with Variety, Fassbender revealed that he would love to continue to play the menacing villain, but his contract says otherwise. “I will shoot a hundred of them! The contract is in three film deals, and this is the last of that.” He then adds, “But I’ll be curious to see what happens next.”

With that revealed, we all have to wait and see how things go (mainly after the release of X-Men: Apocalypse). Will he re-sign with the franchise? Well, if X-Men: Apocalypse is a huge success around the world, and the money is right, we can all expect to see Michael Fassbender suit back up as Magneto a few more times!

Even though, we all know that Hugh Jackman as well as Jennifer Lawrence will not return after their next X-Men films, the big question is prompted: What will be done with those characters? I can see two possible things happening in the near future. One, they could always re-cast the actors like they did with Storm and Jean Grey. Or they could possibly go with my second option and kill the characters off. Can you think off something better to do with the character? Sound off below in the comment section with your thoughts!

So Fassbender is obviously open to more films. That's good news. He's a great Magneto.

Fox is going with another X-Men franchises so Apocalypse will probably end the adventures of Charles & Eric. New franchises mean new characters, some fresh blooded people who could take over some hero duties from Charles, Logan, Beast and the rest of the gang. It's a good way to make X-Men saga stay fresh because imo after DOFP there is not much to be done in terms of older, well known and established characters. I'm curious what would Marvel do with this property but since there is no chance for X-Men to return home it would be a good idea to let characters from 2 trilogies go retire.

Fassbender's Magneto is one of the best cinematic villains. He puts every MCU villain to shame. He's so compelling with a background that is truly heartbreaking. And Fassbender himself just kicks so much ass. Hope he resigns.

Glad to hear he's open to more, hopefully he returns. Same goes for McAvoy, which seems more likely now that Fassbender has stated his willingness to return. A main-series X-Men film doesn't really work without Prof. X, and obviously it's best to avoid recasting, so McAvoy coming back for more will secure the franchise's future. Fassbender coming back would then strengthen that, as his version of Magneto is arguably the franchise's most interesting character - and the two play off each other so well.

As for Jennifer Lawrence - if she's actually leaving (was that confirmed, or did she just say she wasn't sure she'd renew her contract as she wanted some time off?) then they might be able to get away with recasting due to the shape-shifting nature of Mystique's powers, as well as the extensive amount of makeup required for the character. Having said that, the real challenge will be finding a replacement actress with the same talent and audience appeal that Lawrence has, and also being able to convince them that it truly IS the same character.

As far as Hugh Jackman is concerned - if he really IS leaving (I'm still doubtful seeing as he does change his mind often) then I think they should just kill off Wolverine; people have complained that the character is often overused anyway, and no-one will be able to fill Jackman's shoes in this version of the X-Men film series anyway, so it's best to either kill him off or just have him retire and never come back, until a new actor takes over when they eventually reboot.
Also, I'm still unconvinced that The Wolverine sequel will be his last film in the role - maybe his last solo film, but I doubt he'd pass up the chance to play Logan in, say, an X-Force spin-off at least once...

@nightwatcher or they could just focus on the other 1000 characters they have. Killing them obviously won't happen. A real fan of the comics would know that

I don't like agreeing with morons.

But WonderFilledOreo is right. Fass's Mag is better than all the MCU film villains.

At the same time that really isn't much of an accomplishment given how only really 2 MCU film villains with Stane and Loki have been great.

Winter Soldier is not a villain. He's a brainwashed killer for hire by Hydra.

Hopefully, he returns. We're getting an expanded universe of X-men and I definitely want Fassbender's Magneto along with MacAvoy's Xavier to stick around.
Don't make Magneto as the one pulling the strings on every subsequent conflict.
Establish Genosha, let him govern it.
Heck, maybe Xavier and him come to terms at some point and Prof X has to leave Mag's in charge of the school while Prof X embarks on a distant journey.

This is sad. Loved this guy's performance- Fass is a wonderfully talented actor, and the X-franchise will be poorer without him.
That being said, hopefully this means Fox will actually start using the vast library of X-Men villains they've been sitting on for 2 decades.
