Which Horseman Almost Didn't Make The Cut In X-MEN: APOCALYPSE?

In a new interview, X-Men: Apocalypse producer and writer Simon Kinberg gave some details about who almost didn't make the cut as one of Apocalypse's Horsemen...and who almost took their place!

Apocalypse is well-known in the comics for having four Horsemen that do his bidding. In the upcoming film, X-Men: Apocalypse, not much has changed. Magneto, Storm, Psylocke, and Angel serve as the first mutant's lackeys, but according to writer and producer Simon Kinberg, Psylocke wasn't always supposed to make the cut. In an interview with Cinemablend, Kinberg explained how original drafts of the script really only featured three primary Horsemen, with Apocalypse kidnapping James McAvoy’s Professor Xavier with the aim of getting him to switch sides. "The one person we didn’t know was Psylocke, and the reason why is because originally in the script we sort of… I don’t know why we made this decision, but we knew that Professor X was abducted in the middle of the movie, and we thought that almost counted as a fourth Horseman. And so that’s the way we constructed the original draft of the script. There wasn’t going to be a fourth one. The ‘surprise’ was that Xavier was the fourth Horseman. And then when we were working on the script, Bryan and I at one particular point – pretty late in the process – said, ‘He’s not really a Horseman – he’s not doing anything in the third act of the movie.’"  It's interesting now to think that we may have seen a completely different dynamic in the film with both Xavier and Magneto working together under the sway of Apocalypse.

With this decision , Kinberg felt it was wise to pick a fourth Horsemen, corresponding with the four sides of a pyramid, which Apocalypse creates to serve as his base of operations. The team settled on Psylocke, as they found her to be the most interesting character. "We started talking about who that would be, and just literally looked at the list of different Horsemen over the history of the comics, and Psylocke was the one we thought was the most intriguing. And, ironically, or as fate would have it, I had just met with Olivia Munn about Deadpool - like a week or two before. And Bryan and I were up in Montreal, and I said, ‘You know, Olivia Munn could be an interesting Psylocke,’ so we went on the internet and Googled her images. And one of the first things that popped up was a piece of fan art of Olivia as Psylocke."

There you have it folks; it seems fan-casting does pan out sometimes! Granted, it may not sit well with fans that Kinberg and Singer seemingly chose Munn more for her resemblance to the character as opposed to her acting ability, but we'll have to wait until the film's release to find out!

What do you think of Kinberg's decision? Would you have liked to see Xavier as a Horseman over Psylocke? Sound off below! X-Men: Apocalypse releases May 27th.

@SpiderSupes94 - Not really, she barely has a role in the film and next to no dialogue... two lines. She may look like Psylocke, but her actaul role is no better than how she was used in X3 The Last Stand - same goes for Angel.

Total waste.

It's sad that they keep putting important characters like Psylocke and Bishop but not giving them anything to say or do.
Really annoyed by this.

@SimplyAz - For real. I'm skipping this movie in the hopes that Singer never touches an Xmen movie again. SInger stings us again!

Well, considering it's an adaptation, based on existing characters, it should be both. Both things are important: acting ability and resemblance to the character. Ideally, both should always be present.

@Wheel - That was just based on their comments, and the fact that they did a Google search. I do agree it should be both.

@Wheel - Well Psylocke was never going to be used for nothing more than "action" so it makes sense to cast her for resemblance. It's like asking why would they cast Gina Carano as Angel Dust? For her acting ability, Hell No. I rather have the focus be on the new X-Men rather than psylocke anyway, so I wont be surprised if she is killed off in the film.

Step 1: horseman Xavier instead of Psylocke

Step 2: horseman Silver Pete instead of Angel

Step 3: congrats, you won!

It's not a good sign when they say we don't know why we did this

This probably needs a spoilers tag, for the part about Xavier.
Not that it really matters with the reviews it's getting

@Pedrito - To be fair, Charles is the biggest deus ex machina in all of X-men. When a man can do anything and make people do anything they have to incapacitate him quick. It's called professor X-ing. In almost every X-men movie something happens to him to take him out of the picture until he finally can return and talk reason/mind fix everything ok.

@SomDonkus - Yea, the MCU will have to do something similar when Dr. Strange joins the others.
Or just nerf him

Good topic.

Superman is overpowered too, and that's why the writing for him is so abominable. You have to challenge the character in ways that their powers can't help them, like for instance a moral dilemma. The current Superman always makes the wrong choice like saving a dog instead of his Dad, or killing Zod instead of just grabbing him and flying out of the building. Superman's eye beams don't fry his own eyelids so why can't he just put his hand over Zod's eyes.

Anyway back to the topic. Not everyone is susceptible to mind control, and magic is a power from forces outside this dimension who cooperate on their whims, and don't have to comply to Dr Strange's commands if they don't want. His magic literally abandons him all the time in the comics.

@SomDonkus - No, X2 was based on God Loves Man Kills.

@SomDonkus - That's why I'm glad Cyclops killed him in the comics. His lame gimmick was getting so annoying. He's better off dead than alive. His dream already went to sh@t anyway.

@SimpleeComplex - It's a win win. He's gone and it give cyclops some damn character development
