X-MEN: APOCALYPSE Will Return To Weapon X, But Will We See 'Wolverine'? Possible Villain For Next Movie Teased

A detailed scene description for X-Men: Apocalypse takes us back to a familiar location, while director Bryan Singer weighs in on Wolverine's role and the future of the franchise, including the next villain.

X-Men: Days of Future Past ended with Mystique - disguised as William Stryker - taking Wolverine to what seemed to be safety, but it was something of an open ending which has left us guessing for the past two years. We don't know if he now has his Adamantium claws in the new timeline (set to be further explored in his solo movie in 2017) or how and when he crosses paths with the X-Men again, but the latest issue of Empire confirms that Weapon X is going to factor into X-Men: Apocalypse. 

In a sequence revolving around Mystique, Beast, Quicksilver, and Moira MacTaggert, the magazine describes the scene as follows: "The quartet have been kidnapped by army twonk William Stryker following a cataclysmic event at the X-Mansion, and wake up in a holding cell. On a balcony above them, Stryker taunts his prisoners, demanding to know the whereabouts of Magneto." That's pretty intriguing then, and when director Bryan Singer was asked how Wolverine factors into all of this, he replied: "As a central character, he didn't fit into this particular story." It's interesting that he refers to him as not being a "central character," especially as the fact that he doesn't seem to dismiss an appearance completely surely leaves the door open to some sort of cameo appearance.

Talk then turned to the future of the franchise, and with Singer setting his sights on 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, he's moving on from the X-Men for the time being. "Abondoning the franchise is not something I think about. But I could not roll into another X-Men movie tomorrow. And I hope not to. I hope to take a break." If and when he does return though, where do you go after Apocalypse? Mr. Sinister? Onslaught? "I'd love to use Proteus somehow," the filmmaker teased. "There's a lot visually you could do with a character like that." An unexpected choice, but one with potential...

@Luminus - Agreed, Iv'e made my peace with X-Men movies as long as he is behind them, I won't see anymore. Deadpool was fantastic. Which shows when Fox finds the right people it can go well for them. People want to like these movies, but when they show up in black leather and derail themselves far from source material, one has to question who the target audience is.

@TheStranger - agreed. As a lifelong xmen fan it's tough knowing I won't be going to the theater to see an xmen movie where apocalypse is the main villain. One of the coolest villains ever and I have no interest in seeing this. Looks like shit. Singers track record matches. Shit.

@SHAFTzro - Same here. X-Men are my favorite supergroup in comics. Loved them since I was a kid, it's sad that we won't ever get the true Stan Lee or Chris Claremont X-Men until they give this guy the boot and reboot the entire franchise. Which is something the fans sorely need. What's sad is we got the closest to that yet, with a Deadpool movie.

The villain progression was always there for the taking.

1. Magneto.
2. Sinister
3. Apocalypse

And after what would have been a great trilogy, you can go cosmic.

But no. This is singer and Fox.

So, instead, we get the mangled mess that at times achieves an epic scale and at other times feels just so dumb.

I don't get why these movies keep going, I really don't. They have no overarching storyline, and I don't give enough of a shit about any of these characters to want to see them come back. They're really just making them for the sake of making them at this point. The movies themselves may technically be good overall, but they have no reason to exist anymore.

My take for this new young cast:

1. Apocalypse
2. Mr. Sinister or Legion (if Bryan wants)
3. Phoenix rises
4. Dark Phoenix saga (in full. 2 parts ideal scenario)

Anyone who has seen Batman Vs. Superman should be grateful for Singer's role in shaping the X-Men movie universe.

The man has given us great films and while they may not have always been the most comic accurate, they have always been well made films.

While I do think it may be time for Singer to move on (I think we should go in a more comic accurate direction in the future as shown by Miller's Deadpool), he should always be respected for the consistent quality and intelligence he brought to X-Men.

Thanks Bryan Singer and I have no doubt X-Men: Apocalypse will kick ass.

I would say quality films are the most important. I don't deny continuity issues with the X-Men films but man with so few truly excellent comic films made these days, who am I to be so picky?

To me, while a coherent timeline would be nice, it is irrelevant. I have a damn good time watching these movies.

@thewonderer - It's not just the fact that a timeline of events is messy, it's the fact that it destroys all character development he's tried to create. I can forgive some of it because he wasn't the director of every single X film, but when you've got multiple Toads, Emma Frosts, Strykers, Sabretooths, Cyclops, etc running around the same timeline and characters that are supposed to have aged 20 years while not actually looking or acting any older and resetting all relationships and ideologies, it becomes a problem.

I still watch and enjoy all of Singer's X films regardless of their accuracy to the source material, but I just can't bring myself to love them because of how little they all work together.

Still uncertain about Apocalypse (really haven't liked the look of things from any of the trailers) but will give it a shot anyway as I've really liked the past 4 X-Franchise films as well as Singer's original 2. As for how Wolverine could factor in, perhaps he'll cameo in the Weapon X facility during this scene? Whatever the case, he needs his claws in this new timeline by the time the final Wolverine movie rolls around.

As for Proteus appearing in a sequel; don't know anything about the character really so just had a quick look online and he seems interesting enough, reckon they'd probably tweak his backstory a bit and make him Moira's son by Xavier or something (depending on how Apocalypse plays out their relationship that is) and perhaps merge the character to some degree with Legion, obviously avoiding any conflicts with the TV series in production right now.

Mr. Sinister would mean putting Fassbender on the background, and we all know Fox and Bryan dont want to do that.

Magneto has to be always involved, for whatever reason. They just dont trust in the potential of other storylines and villains by theirself without Magneto in the middle of it all. over and over.

And then they wonder why the franchise isnt making the numbers of the big leagues, lol. Fox wont ever realize why.
