X-MEN: Oscar Isaac On Humanizing 'Apocalypse'; Possible 'Archangel' Appearance

In this new interview, the man who'll bring En Sabah Nur to life in X-Men: Apocalypse says he and director Bryan Singer will attempt to find some humanity in the classically evil villain. He also comments on whether he thinks Angel/Archangel could show up in the movie.

We've already heard briefly from Star Wars: The Force Awakens actor Oscar Isaac on his upcoming role as the titular villain in X-Men: Apocalypse, and in that interview he revealed that he was a big fan of the Marvel X-Men comics growing up. Now, while chatting to IGN, Isaac gets much more in-depth about all things Apocalypse, and says he feels it'll be necessary for he and director Bryan Singer to humanize a character that's generally depicted as being pure evil for the screen somewhat.

"In the early conversations we talked a lot about that [Apocalypse's distinct point of view and agenda]. Of course, you read the comic book, and [Apocalypse is] not so shaded with gray -- except his face. [Laughs] That's the only thing gray about him. Just as Bryan's done with the other films, I think he seeks to find something a little more interesting than the archetypal aspects of the characters, which work really well in print, but for a film I think you want to see a bit more of the -- for lack of a better word -- humanity in [Apocalypse]; because ultimately this is a story about humans. It's just different symbols for different things that we feel, so with this character I am incredibly interested in the challenge of finding someone that's psychologically interesting and compelling, and actually the spiritual aspects of the character."

Most X-Men readers will know that by far the most popular story arc featuring Apocalypse deals with the ancient mutant transforming Warren Worthington III, aka Angel, aka Archangel, into Death -- one of his four horsemen. It's something fans would go crazy to see on film, but the problem is the Angel character doesn't actually exist in the new movie timeline...yet anyway. Worthington was played by Ben Foster in X-Men: The Last Stand however, and since Singer brought back Ellen Page's Kitty Pryde for Days Of Future Past is there any chance he'd do the same with Foster? Isaac doesn't know, but it definitely seems like something he'd like to see happen. "He's a great actor," he tells the site when quizzed about Foster's possible return. "I don't really know how they're going to put all that together or exactly what characters, or how that's going to work. But I know Angel and Archangel in particular were some of my favorite characters in that storyline. That was such a cool and dark storyline. I think that would be a cool thing to see on film." Is that something you'd like to see? Or would you prefer a new actor in the role? Much more at the link below.

There's been quite a few talks of humanizing villains lately. (Ultron, Apocalypse Darkseid?)

@TheRationalNerd All three are very high powered over the top types....I think they are trying to draw the audience in with a connection to that humanity..but most of those, especially Darkseid, have NONE...

Changing characters birthdates won't do much for this film. Warren can't be born beyond 1974. Oldest he could be is what, 14/15? And that's assuming they set this as far as '89 which is likely not the case.

Perfect. One of my biggest complaints about Thanos in the MCU right now is he's pretty much all bite no bark and kind of an idiot. He came off more Dr. Evil than Emperor Palpatine as Gunn wanted him to. That's because he's a nothing character so far with a bland motivation.

Show Apocalypse's superiority concept. That he above all mutants is the best and truly believes that which clashes with Xavier and strangely connects but also attacks with Magneto's point of view.

Liking it so far.

The way I see it, if Apocalypse is capable of obtaining all of these alien like powers and ancient technology I don't think it would be that far of a stretch if he's able to sculpt a young teenage Angel into the vision he'd view of him being one of his adult horseman members. i think within the X-Men Legends 2 Video Game he created Archangel within a gene pool tank. There's endless possibilities of how they could incorporate him into the story.

He better look like what he looks like in the comics.Fox/Director/Concept artists have already f*cked up two of Marvel's greatest villains Galactus & Doctor Doom, don't make Apocalypse your third.

I think they could go with the simple fact that Apocalypse has been trying to conquer the world for centuries, and that he's failed each time would drive him to transform mutants - the next generation of humanity - into agents of chaos to test the entirety of the population.

If they can kill him, he'll win.

Humanizing a bad guy isn't the same as making them sympathetic like Doc Ock in Spider-Man 2, it just means he won't be a moustache twirling archetype. As Isaac says, that can work on the page but in movies it always comes off one dimensional.

@m0th3r

That's very true as well bro, I was just guessing that the same may end up happening with Darkseid but for the two we're already given I'm pretty sure that they won't be humanized to the point where they'll be crying apologizing for all of their wrongs and asking for kleenex. I;m sure they'll have relatable humanized factors for Audiences to relate to. Ultron gave his grand speech of how the only way in which the world could be fully in peace is with the extinction of humanity period. Where here it seems like as if Apocalypse will be bringing a wrath to humanity and moreover mutants for them acting cowardly towards society instead of embracing their full will to be the supreme race. Then again he's all about "survival of the finest" so it should be pretty interesting how this phrase will be played out into the film.

If they dare have apocalypse in a movie and not have archangel I will quit. Just don't get ben foster. He is cool but didn't fit that character at all. Angel was a millionaire playboy. Foster is kinda a skinny lanky guy. Christian bale with blonde hair would be bad ass.

the first four horsemen weren't immortals, but apocalypse had their DNA preserved so he could one day implant those powers onto four modern mutants, giving them two powers each. one of those powers would be the Angel of Death's wings, so really any mutant can become Archangel not just Worthington.
