BOX OFFICE: X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST Hits $500M; Highest Grossing Installment Yet

Bryan Singer wiped away the events of X-Men: The Last Stand with X-Men: Days of Future Past, and he has now also managed to eclipse the box office record set by the third (and worst) installment in the franchise at the box office. The 2006 movie from Brett Ratner earned $459.4 million worldwide, but this latest release has now crossed the $500 million mark this weekend with a total of $500.2 million. That includes the extra $32.6 million taken domestically and $95.6 million internationally this weekend. As a result, X-Men: Days of Future Past has so far earned $162.1 million domestically and $338.1 million internationally.

The Wolverine grossed $416.5 million globally in 2013, while X-Men: First Class, earned $353.6 million in 2011. Those two movies helped restore faith in the franchise with fans and normal moviegoers alike, and it will be very interesting to see how much this one grosses by the end of its run!

Another comic book movie still in theatres is The Amazing Spider-Man 2. That finally topped the worldwide total of the first movie today, but has yet to reach $700 million worldwide.

I'm still leaning to First Class being the better movie. That film was perfect to me.

DOFP was my favorite cartoon episode when I was a kid. Now it's my favorite movie. Awesome. The comic book was great too. Is there ever gonna be a movie entitled "Uncanny X-Men"? That would rule

It's because people Prefer a young Magneto and Xavier, and flashy colorful costumes. If Singer goes full color costumes in Apocolypse, it will outgross this one. Embrase the absurdity of the source material, but take it seriously Hollywood, money to be made here. I have to admit, I liked it much more than I thought I would, but I want more of the "young" cast.

Means a 750m finish or so...which is best in franchise history..Which is killer..

We do understand breaking even sucks, and turning a low percentage profit also sucks. If you invest X (anywhere from wishers at 325m and haters at 475m) and need x2 Box office...this means at lowest thats 650, so 750 means a 100m return on a 325m investment..and the high end its still a big red number. If we go average or low average to be nice and say 750 breaks them even...that means Fox invested X into something they made zero profit from.

I guess my question is...anyone here in film school?? i know what stocks, bonds, IRAs, etc...should return, but no idea what a studio is looking for. 50m bucks is always awesome...but if your 3-400m could have made you, or SHOULD HAVE MADE YOU, say 30% or something we dont know it could be very bad.

I do believe Fox is franchise building and this breaks even secures apocalypse . The franchise was damaged over time and the wolverine and this movie are good enough to re-establish it and pull lost fans back. Thats why you saw such an increase in returns on Avengers solo movies over first installments...Franchise Power! Avengers 2 wont do that for Thor and Cap again but it carries over..Marvel has their momentum...Xmen Universe has a nice start and should see those returns soon...
