Matt Damon Says He Once Approached Jonathan Nolan For BOURNE 4

The star of the first three Bourne films, Matt Damon, recently revealed in an interview that one time he talked to The Dark Knight and TDKR co-writer Jonathan Nolan about the fourth film in the franchise.

The Bourne Legacy wasn't a massive hit for the studio this summer, even though Universal had high hopes for it. Before Jeremy Renner took over, Matt Damon played the title character in three films. He already said that Legacy just makes it harder for him to return to this franchise and that he can't see where would the story go. At one point, director Paul Greengrass and Damon tried to work on the script for a possible fourth film, but of course, the whole thing fell apart. In an interview with Deadline about his new film Promised Land (directed by Gus Van Sant), Damon talked about what needs to happen for him to star in another film and how he once approached Chris Nolan's brother, Jonathan Nolan, to see if he can make the story work:

"Just a couple things, really. Paul Greengrass has to want to do it, and secondly and equally important, it comes down to Paul and I knowing what the hell we want to do. We just don’t have a story, and we haven’t had one. I quietly went to Jonah Nolan, because he and his brother Chris did such a brilliant job on Batman and that whole mythology. I just said, can you put your brain on this? I can’t figure it out. And he took a run at it and he couldn’t crack it either. Paul and I have been talking about it for years. And we can’t quite see what the movie would be. If we could get line of sight on that... I would love to do another one. I love that character. To me, the reason to make that movie is because people want to see it. Paul and I have said that to each other. We don’t take for granted the fact that we’ve built an audience for Bourne, that’s a real privilege. But our part of that bargain is that the movie is good and belongs with the other three. Until we can deliver that, we just can’t make it."

I haven't had a chance to watch The Bourne Legacy in theatres (waiting for the Blu-ray) so I can't comment too much on that one, but I really did enjoy The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum. Maybe they will get the script to a point where everyone likes it, and we'll see another Bourne with Damon.

If him and Renner team-up in the next one my testicles will exploded from masculinity.

The Bourne Legacy was great, far more intelligent espionage thriller than what the public wanted. Not just another dumb action movie thank christ.

I didn't mind The Bourne Legacy but thought it ended kind of abruptly. No real complaints other than that though

The Bourne Legacy was good but could've been better. I guess it was the pacing. The first 3 Bourne movies got everything right:story, action, and pacing.

I enjoyed the Bourne Legacy, but I am also from Alaska so I enjoyed seeing "Alaska" in the film (of course, it wasn't really Alaska - British Columbia tends to become the Alaska body-double) and with the exception of one plot-point failure, I enjoyed Legacy.

Legacy was a worthless entry in the franchise. The whole point of the adventure was the protagonist getting pills to keep him from becoming...stupid? Forget about exposing treadstone, forget about the betrayals, let's just run to SE Asia and get some drugs. Very lame, especially when you consider how intricate and well written the original trilogy was. If they make another one with Damon that's actually good, Legacy needs to be written out of continuity. Call it a bad dream.

Legacy was decent but the threats weren't big enough, and I don't know if I am the only one but I thought the movie ended abruptly. It seemed like the last half hour was just cut off.

Huh, that's really interesting. I haven't seen The Bourne Legacy either, but I heard it was a let down compared to the other movies.

I heard for Bourne 5, Jason Bourne and Aaron Cross are supposed to team-up. I really hope that is true!

I mean, Matt Damon and Jeremy Renner kicking ass on screen together? [frick] YEAH!!!

Before I get accused of Nolan bashing then you haven't a glue I'm the biggest BB TDK inception fan also TDKR was well directed but flawed. There's a reason why ppl like Jonathan Nolan write adapted screenplays and this is just an opinion but his brother seems more the ideas and story man while Jonathan seems to be good at constructing stories and words this isn't an attack just an observation.

"He already said that Legacy just makes it harder for him to return to this franchise"

Actually i believe that Legacy makes it easier for him to return...at the end of the 3rd film Bourne had finished Black Briar and had no reason to return...now with the established Ed Norton villain and Renners character on the run...it would create the perfect oppurtunity for a team up...

Renners character seeks out Bourne to aid in his fight against Norton...only for Bourne to refuse stating 'he's out of the game' only to get drawn back into it...

There you go Damon cracked it...it could be called:

"The Bourne Continuum"

I've got it. The Bourne Avengers.
First, Aaron Cross and Jason Bourne team up to take down Ed Norton, until Cross forgets to take his blue pill and realizes he's actually Hawkeye and shoot's Bourne with an arrow and kills him. He then finds Norton and gives him a two green pills and it makes Norton remember he's the hulk, plus they're green pills and they make people stronger... duh. Together they set out to find and kill Ben Affleck so that he can NEVER touch a cbm and since Damon/Bourne knows how much that'd suck, he comes back from the dead as vision to team up with the rest of the Avengers and they kill Ben Affleck. The End.

I saw it 2 days ago.You can't really say it's that bad but the whole pills plot was kind of lame, and I think that at the showdown with the other hitman it needed brutal asskicking and not so much chasing imo.

Ok, here is something that I was hoping for in the Bourne Legacy. Jason Bourne is dead or so what it seems. Jason became a teacher and has vowed to stay away from his past. Treadstone has been lock, thrown away, never to be seen again until a new batch of Goverment agents are born that does not work for the U.S.A. Russian agents! Not only are they after Bourne, they are after every secert to bring down U.S.A. Now Bourne is face to join forces with the people that tired to kill him in his past to save the world. But the only way that he will ever help, is that Borune gets his freedom from Treadstone once and for all.
