AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER Star Sam Worthington Reflects On "Awful" CASINO ROYALE Audition To Play James Bond

Daniel Craig played 007 in five movies after being cast as James Bond in Casino Royale, but could the job have gone to Sam Worthington instead? Not based on the Avatar: The Way of Water star's audition!

Pierce Brosnan's time as James Bond came to an end after 2002's Die Another Day, and heading into the mid-2000s, there was a huge amount of excitement surrounding who would be the next 007.

Daniel Craig's casting came as a surprise (and led to a lot of "James Blonde" headlines), but over the course of five movies, he proved himself more than worthy of playing Ian Fleming's iconic spy. Similar to what's happening now, franchise producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson spent two years searching for a new Bond, and Avatar: The Way of Water star Sam Worthington was among those considered.

Unfortunately for the Australian actor, his audition didn't go well.

"I did go for Bond. I went and did the audition with Martin Campbell, who ended up directing Casino Royale," Worthington revealed during an interview on the Fitzy & Whipper radio show (via ActioNewz.com). "You walk in, there's the girl in the bed, you charm her. I could get the killer of Bond down. I just couldn't get the charm. I couldn't charm her. The suit didn't fit, man."

Quizzed on whether he kept his natural accent or attempted to portray his Bond as British, the actor added: "I tried to do a British accent. I did say to them I wanted to wear the white tuxedo like Roger Moore. I wanted to bring back kung fu chops, and they looked at me like I was crazy."

"I said, 'If I do an Australian [accent], I'm gonna be the next George Lazenby.' He only did one [movie, 1969's On Her Majesty's Secret Service], and I didn't want to be like that. So I tried British. It was awful," Worthington added. "I sounded like Dick Van Dyke from Mary Poppins. I remember Martin going, 'Just do your normal voice, it's all cool, man.'"

Worthington would go on to find success in Hollywood, though Terminator: Salvation didn't do him many favours and he gave blockbuster filmmaking a break before returning for Avatar: The Way of Water last December.

With that proving to be a $2 billion hit, we're hoping to see much more of Worthington back on our screens...probably not as James Bond, though!

@UncleHarm1 -

I like that he stays in his lane.

The guy is set for life and he seems humble. He did great in terminator salvation 🤝

he was kind of bland in the first one, and hollywood's attempt at making him a huge movie star in 2009-2010 didn't really pan out, but he improved significantly in way of water.
would have been a total miscast for bond though.

@tmp3 - I actually liked him in the first one, but yeah he really improved for the second one. Good performance. He may not be the best actor, but he is certainly good in this role.

@HeavyMetal4Life - i thought he was really solid in way of water. i think that between adding an extra dimension to jake by making him a father (playing to worthington's own life experiences of being one) and the fact that he's genuinely improved as an actor in the 13 year gap made a big difference this time around.
also, his line delivery of "lets get it done" in the climax felt so bad-ass given the context of the scene haha

@tmp3 - totally agree. And oh man, that line delivery was so bad-ass, great moment.

@tmp3 - I honestly don't remember a lot from the first one, but he was great in The Way of Water. Think the movie did play to his strengths

''I wanted to bring back kung fu chops''

Thank you! I want the exact same, and that's maybe part of the reason I want Andrew Koji as the next James Bond.

Also, I can't really see Worthington as James Bond, partly because of the reasons why he failed the audition.

Hear me out... I think if Sam got better at doing an American accent that he could be a decent Bruce Wayne / Batman.

Although he's not a bad actor, he was incredibly forced upon us for a few years there.
I liked him in Salvation (honestly don't think it was as bad as it was panned) but other than that he always feels forced to me.

I have a personal bitterness about the guy haha, but I'm kinda hoping the Aaron Taylor-Johnson news plays out.
