NO TIME TO DIE Star Ben Whishaw Shares Disappointment Over The Movie's LGBTQ+ Scene Involving Q

No Time to Die quietly revealed that Ben Whishaw's Q is, in fact, gay, but the actor has now expressed disappointment with the way that scene was handled and the fact it didn't really lead anywhere...

No Time to Die delivered a superb conclusion to Daniel Craig's tenure as James Bond, though one of the movie's stranger moments came when 007 visited Q's home and learned he was waiting on his male date to arrive. There's nothing abnormal about that, of course, but the scene came across like a superfluous way to add a gay character to the franchise.

Like Joe Russo playing a survivor of the Blip in Avengers: Endgame who we learned was gay through some heavy-handed dialogue, many have questioned why No Time to Die made Q gay, only for it to have no real bearing on the story. As it turns out, actor Ben Whishaw agrees with that sentiment.

"I’m very happy to admit maybe some things were not great about that [creative] decision," the actor recently told The Guardian. "I think I thought, ‘Are we doing this, and then doing nothing with it?’ I remember, perhaps, feeling that was unsatisfying," Whishaw added, saying he believes the idea still "came from a good place."

"For whatever reason, I didn’t pick it apart with anybody on the film," he continued. "Maybe on another kind of project I would have done? But it’s a very big machine. I thought a lot about whether I should question it. Finally I didn’t. I accepted this was what was written. And I said the lines. And it is what it is."

We thankfully live in a time where there is a greater level of representation on screen, so there being a gay character in the James Bond franchise has been welcomed. However, by putting an established character like Q in that role, people understandably expected more, and the way the scene was handled made the "reveal" feel more like lip service than one with any real weight.

It's unclear where the series goes from here, but a new 007 is going to be cast soon. Whether cast members from the Craig-era like Whishaw return obviously remains to be seen.

It was completely pointless and forced.

@TheShape9859 - 99% of representation on screen is just corporations trying to score some PR points, nothing more nothing less imo.

@Waddles - it so the same thing problem dumbasses like the one you’re responding to try to make themselves and everyone think that white , male, or straight is the default for humans and anything else is DLC or some shit

@Waddles - there was no follow-through with it. It seemed cheap. No one shows up, no direct connection onscreen — it was a fleeting thought was empty at best.

@Waddles - I think they mean more in terms of it not ultimately meaning anything. Forced and pointless in the sense that it seemed to not affect the movie. Just tossed it in.

@Waddles - Exactly. It’s treated as not a big deal. That’s why I roll my eyes at people who just start complaining about things being “woke” or “pandering” or “done for PR”. They’re pretty much saying if it’s not straight, white or male then it doesn’t fit. So dumb.

@Typhoon20 - same with many of the recon treatments in comics. If it is part of the character, their arc, or the story and is sensible then it can work. It seems it often is simply thrown in to score points.

@Waddles - like the Larper that was outraged when Hawkeye thought the bag the arrows were in was for him too. “My wife made that for me!” Sssso? Don’t give em stuff in a bag sucka

@Waddles - right organic as grass fed tigers. And I’m sure the missing bag will be addressed in the Larper spin-off, marvel! Forget that thread and bring in the Leader played by whatshisface!

I haven’t seen the movie but I don’t understand why studios even do it this way, like they want a pat on the back for mentioning someone’s queer. Do it or don’t. Have relationships, let them be the focal point, show intimacy. People who hate it will get over it and people who need to see it will be so grateful. No reason they can’t be front and center once in awhile like straight relationships in every movie ever.

@feedonatreefrog - Fine with me. Tbh one thing you NEVER see in movies/shows is like a slutty gay character. It’s either a mention or a romance. The world probably is not ready for a mainstream guy who goes around banging dudes lol

From what I remember from the movie, it was done in a smooth and organic way without interfering with the flow of the story. Because I don't know if the actor noticed, but the film has the words James Bond written all over it, not Q. Going significantly further with it might have felt forced for the audience and it would've became representation just for the sake of it.

Heavy-handed? All I caught was that he had a date and it was with a he, and that was about it. I was like ''yeah sure''. Much better than making a whole deal out of it

@bkmeijer - every time this comes up like with the Endgame thing I’m confused cause they bring up just naturally and part of the convo but then people want them to stop the entire movie to discuss it but if you discuss it by stopping the movie that’s way more unnatural.

Agreed. I thought most people were wanting representation to be treated like”no big deal” as to normalize it which I thought the movie did well.

@Satan - when has Q ever been gay ??? Make an R and make him gay then. Stop changing what has always been and come up with a new character who is gay. I’m not uncomfortable. It’s annoying.
