DC Films is about to again change the game with a diverse slate, talent and more unique film making rather than studio shaped money grabs that look, feel and sound the same!

Why DC will dominate the future few years [by few I mean from 2020 up until 2025].

This probably sounds like a joke to the thousands of MCU loyalist here that have used Rotten Tomatoes for their winning argument here for 5 years now. What I mean by dominate is purely related to hype and anticipation. Whatever people will have you believe, DCU and MCU aren’t doing something that much different. Both studios started their shared universes to lesser Box Office success and the same type of audience and critics scores. And to be very specific when I say audience scores I mean iMDB and Rotten Tomatoes, when I say critics scores I mean Rotten Tomatoes.

Now do not confuse a movie aggregate score for the actual 1 out of 10 score. I would even go as far and compare their pre shared universe attempts to launch with Green Lantern and Hulk , both movies made around the 220 Million worldwide gross and both movies are not included in the franchise. Currently the critics score for the DCU is 5.85 and MCU stands at 6.9, the difference is 1 point. You can make fun of Justice League [terrible movie] , but at that point in time in their early phase Marvel were making Captain America TFA and The Incredible Hulk, which aren’t that great too. Batman V Superman was accused of many things done wrong and most of them fit Iron Man 2 too as well. Anyway, leaving critics averages in %, the rest is a pretty close race, DCU first 5 movies have grossed 3.76 Billion compared to MCU’s first 6 for 3.8 Billion.

Why I think DC is bringing the heat. First off, Marvel is probably going to retire some of its heavy hitters like Iron Man, who has been part of so many movies in the past 10 years that I think we have pretty much got the hang of it by now. He has in Captain America and Spider-man, had 3 movies on his own and did 3 Avengers movies with another one coming next year.

That’s 9 movies in 10 years, it’s almost as we are seeing him every year, Captain America, Thor are closing in on him, so those are the main hitter that might go soon. What is Marvel left with Spider-Man, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Doctor Strange, Ant-Man and a final Guardians movie? Ok, sounds nice, but let’s break it down. Homecoming came out and with a sizeable Iron Man presence did not beat many of the previous movies adjusted for inflation, also the character since 2001 has had 6 movies so far coming in steady, with another coming next year featuring D list villains, since the A listers have been over used or are being developed by Sony as solos that aren’t connected.

Sounds a bit messy. On the other hand Ant-Man seems to be only relying on the fact that it’s a part of the MCU, two movies later the franchise hasn’t been able to become more than a sit com situated in a super hero franchise. Captain Marvel looks to be promising so far, but I am more inclined to believe Brie Larson will not be the next big Superhero franchise leader. Doctor Strange 2 isn’t something I am personally waiting for after the first movie inserted 30000 jokes that could have been skipped and showed us more Ditko inspired moments and mind-blowing FX. Anyway, he has a chance to become bigger if the 2nd movie does something original and unseen. Panther 2 would probably the biggest hit out of all these solo outings, not because of something else, but because politically correct media will praise the sit out of any form of the movie.

All in all we are in for some lesser known characters that will be fighting for ring leader after your main stars leave, the leader will dictate the tone of the new Avengers and as much as I hate to say it, at this point marvel desperately needs the X-Men inserted here as a life line for some story telling.

Furthermore, on the other hand we have a crazy looking Aquaman movie taking place underwater, never been done before by any movie in that aspect, with a great director and cast. We are getting a totally 360 tone wise Joker movie with Oscar winning cast members, that really doesn’t care about sequel’s. A 100 % female centric R rated BOP movie with a solidified Harley Quinn presence sounds like a easy fast win, smaller budget, great box office odds.

Then we have the sequel to the original female box office hit Wonder Woman 84, this movie really has a chance of doing some records and will be a hit anyway you look at it. We are also waiting for production start on The batman by one of the most exciting directors out there that made me watch 2 movies with monkeys way more intense that most other stuff out there and walk out a fan. Not to mention that so far word on the street is Batman isn’t going to feature many cross-universe references and that’s the best way to go about it. Then we have what is probably going to be a fun Flash solo movie focused on his own adventures, and not relying on world building.

All these movies can have sequels, so for the foreseeable future we are stacked with Batman, Flash, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Suicide Squad-esque movies and then if and when a script and a director comes along we can get a Superman movie, Supergirl movie, Batgirl movie, not to mention that Shazam , which is coming next year and looks super fresh can cross paths with Black Adam sooner than later. Yes, surely Avengers 4 will be a hit and make money and things of that nature, but besides that I don’t think the MCU has much more left to show us, where DC feels like its starting now and is ready to whip out the big guns, The days of blaming Zack Snyder for low scores are done, let’s see how long can critics bash DC for things that are no longer present.

And since so many of you are triggered when you hear DC is winning, please go ahead and bash me in the comments, I know that all you want.

All in all, here is some trigger assumptions;

Aquaman – I predict worldwide gross between 700 Million and 950 Million;

Shazam – I predict total between 650 Million and 800 Million;

Joker – I predict this movie will take around 690 Million max if the studio releases it as an indie;

Birds of prey – I predict this movie will gross between 700 Million and 900 Million;

If Aquman hits these numbers, that will bring the unofficial DCU phase 1 [6 movies to a total of 4.5, 4.7 Billion total, which compared to 3.8 Billion isn’t that much worse]

Now hit the comment section to inform me how inaccurate this is.

I agree with this article that DC will eventually start beating Marvel on the moviefront.

Technically speaking, a lot of fans like to exaggerate just how much of a difficult time the DCEU's had since its inception. Man of Steel, Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman all grossed over $700,000,000 worldwide and even Batman v Superman amassed $1,000,000,000 worldwide. Meanwhile, Iron Man 1 and 2 both gained less than $700,000,000 worldwide and Captain America and Thor didn't even break over $500,000,000. It was only with Avengers that they crossed the billion mark and started garnering attention.

Justice League was a financial hiccup in the road, but as the OP says, from Aquaman onwards it can only get better.

Characters like Wonder Woman, Aquaman and Flash are safe bets to get over $700,000,000 worldwide and in Batman's case, he'll make over $1,000,000,000 easily if WB get their act together.

Movies like Joker, Birds of Prey, Suicide Squad 2 and Black Adam have the potential to be critical successes and make a massive fortune at the box-office worldwide.

Then there's the potential for dozens of low budget movies on well known DC characters like Catwoman, Constantine, Deadshot, Deathstroke, Katana, Nightwing, Supergirl etc. which if done right could make hundreds of millions of dollars on double-digit numbered budgets.

All in all, so long as WB get their act to together, there's so much to look forward to.

I like the PC comment regarding "Black Panther 2." The first one is truly weak.

Are you judging these movies by their revenue? Then you're equating yourself with the Marvel fans on this site. I am a Marvel fan. However, I judge the movies on their own merits.

I've watch 'MoS,' 'Batman v. Superman,' and "Wonder Woman." None of which was bringing me back for a second viewing. What DC doesn't have is a real feel of a shared universe. 'B v S' showed they are together. It just didn't seem to matter.

Here's the problem; DC has exactly 4 unique & good characters* that can sell a movie, 5 if Aquaman works and it's looking like it might. Recolors like Nightwing & Supergirl don't help. That's not enough. Getting those second and third tier characters up to speed will take a LONG time. I'm not saying it can't be done. But to do it right will take more work than the other films with more established characters. One more unpopular film and they are in deep deep trouble. That means slow going.

*Supes, Bats, WW, Flash.

You will notice I have left off one major character, Green Lantern. Quite frankly unless they rework the origin a LOT its going to crash & burn again. Green Lantern from the comics is a great 1940's hero but that time has passed. As for Shazam he's a joke, he may be a decent joke but until the film drops the jury's out on that. In any case he does not help (or hurt) the rest of DC Universe at all. As always YMMV.

Your first problem is not addressing the harm by the horrible take on Supes. That poisons the well on anything involving him and since he is a key to this universe you are already one foot in the grave until it is either corrected, rebooted, or so much time passes that it's forgotten. As for most of the Avengers not doing very well on their own that's crap. Avenger's 1 boosted all it characters. JLA did the opposite except for WW (we hope). Moving on.

>>Here is why you are wrong, most DC characters stand on their own with exceptions

5 or 6 characters isn't even close to "most". Still at we least agree on who the big hitters are. Well mostly. As I said earlier I think Green Lantern is a problem, the others are like you said. The GL origin is so cheesy that today's audience will likely have a problem with it. Of course it's no more cheesy than getting bit by a radioactive spider so what's the difference you ask ? Basically it's because Spidey is extremely well known, there was a downside to the character that resonated, and people have gotten past the origin which is a pass GL won't get. No it's not fair. Move on.

So lets take your other characters;
1) Batgirl & Nightwing are recolors of Batman. BORING. Further they tend to diminish some of the appeal of the original character. If Bat Boy, Bat Girly, and Bat MILF can do it like Bat Guy then wtf makes him special ? NOTHING. Hell he's just a Bat Guys and Gals franchisee and not very unique. Bad, nee horrible idea.

2) Suicide Squad & Birds of Prey. Its quite possible for them to do business in the 600-750M* range if they are good, more if they are great. After all SS1 did 750M ish. The ensemble cast is the thing that makes or breaks this kind of movie. It makes it potentially more expensive unless you get one or two bankable stars and give them all the good scenes and lines. But it most certainly can be done. But not often and team-ups beyond this get really expensive fast.

*SS & GotG Vol 1 before it, took in an extra 50-75M because they were August releases, in a year where the was little competition from other films in Aug/Sept, and they replayed well which meant they held on to a lot of screens longer than normal.

3) Shazam as he historically was written is a bad joke. DC should either give him back to Fawcett who they stole him from in the first place and pretend he was never there or keep him totally separate and out of the DCU.

4) A Joker movie could work once or twice given the right actor and script. More than that brings in the cheese of villains always getting away with it.

5) Black Adam could work if properly setup. Otherwise he'll have the same box office as the phase 1 Marvel solo films that introduced the characters. Probably somewhere closer to Iron Man than Thor though all other things being equal.

None of the above are world beaters. Not even close. BUT ! .............As long as they don't screw it up again with Supes they can close the gap a lot. As for the ones that actually are world beaters, the trinity, if they can find something decent to sub for Zack Snyders vision and not copy anybody else they should be fine.

>> Hulk, Thor, Hawkeye, Widow - those are all characters that need to be crossed over ...wait and you will see

Thor ? Don't agree there. As for the others, not always. Once they were setup in other movies all but the Hulk could fly solo, which is something Marvel has already accomplished. That said there is a pitfall in these lesser characters relating to the box office almost certainly being smaller than the big shots (barring a solid buildup). You have keep to costs down. But if your lesser character requires lots of vfx then you are screwed.

One final thing. After Avengers 4 drops next year imo we will be entering a state where it's going to feel like its all been done before or at least close to it. In that atmosphere I fully expect getting an audience is going to get harder and burnout more likely. That's a headwind Marvel didn't have to fight up till now but if I'm right everybody is going to have to deal with it going forward. The difference is that Marvel has goodwill built up to an extent that no else even comes close to. As always YMMV.

Regarding Cap's character working. I was clearly referring to the character being both interesting and a successful playing of a boy scout, proving that it could be done. The movies did pretty decently considering the name Capt. America is off putting to some.

My standard on Supes is simple. Whatever puts the most butts in seats
and keeps them there is the way to go. If that was Zach's dark path I would hold my nose and say little. I still wouldn't go but I wouldn't be this publicly disgusted.

You have a point, maybe the stench from the earlier Green Lantern has
dissipated enough to not matter. Still don't like the comic book origin though.

>Shazam first movie >> Ant Man 1 & 2, we can place a bet if you wish ???

For the sake of argument I'll assume its a decent movie that's not written for 9 and 10 years old boys. My guess is a B.O. better than Ant Man 1 and less than 2. That's also assuming no cut-throat competition or terrible release date. But I wouldn't bet on it. Way too iffy at this point.

Joker > Captain Marvel $$$ , wanna bet ?

Yep, I'll take that bet. None of what I've seen of any Joker since TDK would sell tickets in buckets. But it will be cheap to make and profitable.

Spiderman being the leader in merch that does not mean he is the most
recognizable necessarily. It's just as likely the Marvel had better crap for sale for some reason or that Spidey lovers spend more per capita than the others. In any case it does not equate well enough to make anything but general statements.

The last Thor came within 28M of equaling your beloved Batman V. Superman. LMAO. The two biggest names in comics and they almost got whooped.
