EDITORIAL: Possible Post-Credits Scene to GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY and Why Edgar Wright might've Left due to it being Wrong!

Marvel wasn't the first to use the post-credits scene to intrigue viewers about possible future plot points of a story, but they sure have made it a staple and have used it well. Hit the jump to find out what theoretical scene could happen and why it may have hit a nerve with the ex Ant-Man director...

First off, I'd like to say that whatever happens to the Ant-Man movie I hope its for the best and I was saddened at the news of hearing Wright and Marvel split so late. We were waiting for this for 8+years? And it was Wright who fought so hard to get Marvel to even do an Ant-Man movie in the first place, way before Iron Man 1 and the birth of the MCU.

But anyway, let's discuss the possible mid/post credits teaser that could be attached with Guardians of the Galaxy...

As many of you know Marvel movies all end with some kind of mid/post - credits scene ( I would've used "teaser"  instead of "scene" but one post - credit scene is wasted...IMLOOKINGATYOUIRONMAN3) that shows something or someone that continues a plot point from one movie to the next.

So lets recap, In Phase 1 we had...

Iron Man : The Nick Fury SHIELD Revelation - The one that started it all

Incredible Hulk: Stark makes a proposition to General Ross - Assumed to be about the Hulk, but later retconned as about being the Abomination in a Marvel One Shot

Iron Man 2: Thor's Hammer Mjolnir -
It's Hammer TIME!

Thor : Selvig, Loki, Fury, Tessaract -
A lot going on here, with the Cosmic Cube reveal and that SHIELD is in possesion of it. Then we find out Selvig has some how been influenced by Loki himself.

Captain America : The First Avenger : The Wake up to present day and the Avenger's Trailer -
A doozy of a mid credit and post credit scene, one of the most memorable ones for me. "I had a date." line and the bonus Avengers Trailer.

Avengers: And at the end we got this big MOFO that was revealed...

And now we're in Phase 2.

But let me discuss something first. If you noticed in all the Phase 1 credit scenes, it was always something leading into the next film. And whatever/whoever it was it was pretty much directly involved in the film RIGHT AFTER the film it was attached to. [The Avenger's reveal of Thanos was more of a "This is what's behind everything thats happening in this Phase and it's an over arching Villian behind the scenes" sort of tease rather than a direct lead to the next film.]

What I noticed is that In Phase 2, the credit scene takes something from the film it's in and then shows you something in the film,  skips the film right after it and connects it to the film two movies ahead of it.

Here I'll show you the difference in Phase 2 and you'll see the pattern I noticed.
(the thing connected or from the movie its attached to)
(the thing connected or from the movie its skip to)

[I'll skip over the Iron Man 3 end tease because that was a dissapointment.]

In Thor 2: The Darky Dark Darkiest World's mid credit stinger

We get Lady Sif and Volstagg (the thing connected or from the movie its attached to)

Who are from the THOR universe.

+

Benicio Del Toro as the Collector in... I guess the Collector's Collection room?
(the thing connected or from the movie its skip to)

But wait he's from the cosmic side, for Guardians of the Galaxy right ? and what's this? Infinity Stones? and he just needs

....dundundunnnn....

"4 more"? waitwaitwaitback the hell up. The next movie is Winter Soldier where's my Winter Soldier TEASE?!

Then months pass and boom one of the greatest Comic Book Movie's is released:

CAPTAIN AMERICA THE WINTER SOLDIER. 'murica F*** YEAH!

Which in the mid credits tease has

Baron Von Strucker (the thing connected or from the movie its attached to)

A rogue from Captain America's Universe fiddling with Loki's Glow stick of destiny and awaken the abilities of these two freaks:

Quicksilver running around... quickly and Scarlet Witch...Changing the probabilty of those blocks..or witching, whatever. some shit like that. (the thing connected or from the movie its skip to)

but they're not from Guardians of the Galaxy? Where's the direct Guardians tease? Its the next film?

Nope, we get a tease for The Avengers: Age of Ultron, is what we get. Which was awesome in its own right.

So pretty soon GOTG will come bouncing along and what is the midcredits tease gonna be there you ask?

Well Agents of SHIELD (the tv series that some love/hate) has revealed that Aliens have been coming and going as they please in the MCU. Some we know about and some no one knows about, (it was shown Lady Sif saying something along the lines of "don't worry no one has visited Earth in a long time, otherwise we would've known") But we know better. Coulson saw the blue alien which we suspect is Kree. Skye is from well, the SKY. And they showed her "father" who seemed to be bathing in blood at the end of Season 1. Or something. While also revealing that the Lady In the Flower Dress may also be of extraterrestrial origin with her knowledge of Skye's true parentage.

Then we got the news about the Agent Carter series which will show the MCU in a period we haven't seen yet. Possibly the 1950's/1960's - 1970's and the foundation of SHIELD.

Wright's idea for Ant-Man had a similar timeline in mind with a young Hank Pym in the 60's with an in-period pulpy spy film tone going for it, well for at least part of the film.

Guardians of the Galaxy deals with the present and basically a lot of cosmic level stuff. But the one thing that ties it back to the already established MCU is the Inifinity Stones(that orb thing is specualted to be a Time Stone), Thanos, and Peter Quill's Earth origin where he was captured by Yondu in the 80's.

So we got Aliens, 1960's-1970's, child of the 80's, Early SHIELD, Infinity Stones, and a young Ant-Man?

I think GOTG's Post credits is:

J'son of Spartax and father of Peter Quill (the thing connected or from the movie its attached to)

in the late 60's/early 70's meeting up with...

Patrick Wilson as the Young Hank Pym of that era (the thing connected or from the movie its skip to)

Maybe the script had to tie-in way too much of this cosmic stuff and things not having to do with Hank/Ant-Man's Origin Story or even the How to Steal an Ant-Man arc. This then pushed Edgar Wright to quit.

What do you think of the theory and what do you think happened behind Wright leaving? Sound off below

Not sure but excellent and detailed write up.

I don't think THAT lead Wright to quit ...but everything else is spot on and I could see that definitely being a possibility of what we would get at the end of GOTG.

Good write up. It's an interesting theory but i think it was a bit more than that which forced Wright to leave. Maybe to many creative differences between him and the studio not coming to agreement.

why would J'son meet hank pym?
i would like to see a after credits scene with J'son it could set up the next guardians. but i expect the after credits scene to be something involving thanos or adam warlock.

my guess is also that of a Adam Warlock cameo in the GOTG after credit scenes

I thought Marvel went to Wright with Ant Man? Im probably wrong, I mean I didn't start keeping up with CBM news until around the time Thor and Cap came out... Good write up by the way.

Good write up but does two instances form a pattern?

Especially as one movie blatantly disregarded it. Its possible that The Dark World required too much of an explanation no matter what they showed. The villain would require too much explanation, as does the central macguffin, leaving what? Loki in his cell? No point to that.

But that's all conjecture.

Either way, the post-credit scene may well have forced Wright's hand because it would set in stone something he was still fighting about with the production team. James Gunn also wasn't happy with the GotG post-credit teaser because of this very same scenario but he never proposed such a radical departure from the source material.

The next post credits scene is obviously Dr Strange.

Yeah, I wish.

I agree with the general opinion of why he quit. When he wrote the script, there was no interconnected MCU. He wrote a movie that stood alone. I think Marvel pushed to include nods to the rest of the universe and he walked when he felt like he didn't have the creative control he wanted. Niether party was really wrong, just not trying to accomplish the same thing. Just hope the movie doesnt suffer because of it.

IM3 wasn't the same as Fury popping up and getting everyone wet in the pants for a big team up movie, BUT I still think it set up an aspect of Avengers 2. And when you look at it, both were simply two guys talking.

In my mind, the Fury scene in Iron Man led into Avengers more than IM2. Yeah, Fury showed up in IM2, but there's nothing in that scene that sets up the following film.

So really, IM and IM3 set up the big team-up movie that will follow.

Yes, for a lot of people it does.

I'm not really saying anything against Iron Man 2, or its merits etc. I was saying that the credit scene at the end of Iron Man was setting up Avengers, not Iron Man 2. Like Iron Man 3, Iron Man's credit scene was more about the big team up movie that will happen after, rather than setting up anything for the next film to be released.

My point about Nick Fury in Iron Man 2 was explaining why I feel that, despite him appearing in both the IM credit scene AND having a few scenes in the sequel, I don't feel the credit scene sets up his involvement in IM2...as much as it sets up Iron Man's involvement in Avengers.

Hulk also was setting up Avengers. And yes, Iron Man 2 set up Thor, and Thor set up both Avengers and Cap, and then Cap set up Avengers. Avengers set up (I believe) Avengers 3, Iron Man 3 set up Avengers 2, Thor 2 set up GOTG as well as Thor 3, Cap 2 set up Avengers 2 as well as Cap 3, and we'll see about GOTG.

So, there isn't really that much of a definite pattern. Sometimes they set up the next movie, sometimes they set up a couple movies down, sometimes they set up their own sequel, and most of the time they set up the big pending team-up movie.

nice theory, but I think it has more to do with script rewrites and changing the feel/view of Ant-Man.

Great job. I'm just confused why Ja'son or Spartax would meet with any one from Earth that's not directly related to their battle with the Badoon or with Peter Quill. I know this, Guardians is the movie I'm most excited about since Avengers.

Ha. Not for nothing but until RIGHT NOW I had completely forgot that Xavier died in X3. I get that he transfered his consciousness but... how does that explain still being crippled or looking the exact same? Eh, I won't think about it to hard. DoFP was good. Time is like a river.

Nice article, but it's all actually pretty simple to put together.

Thor had a scene from Guardians because they are all marvel cosmic characters.

Captain America had the Avengers tease simply because his movie is the one that leads directly into Age of Ultron.

The Ant-Man film Was planned Before Iron Man 1. The whole Phase 1 and 2 films were planned around Edgar Wrights Ant-man film originally they wanted the Ant-man film first but Wright changed that to the way we we now know it.
