EDITORIAL: Why 'Guardians of the Galaxy' is shaping up to be one of the most exciting Marvel movies yet

Marvel has been successful at created the MCU and bridging the gap between CBMs and the average movie audience. Have they peeked? Is there anyway they can go above and beyond what they have already done? GOTG will be the answer to these questions.

Now that Marvel has successfully created the MCU, where do they go from here? Let's face it, while 'Captain America: Winter Soldier' and 'Thor: The Dark World' will no doubt be awesome and very entertaining, will they really surprise us? In general, no they won't. Cap 2 will be more Cap and S.H.I.E.L.D. action and Thor 2 will be more of Thor flying and throwing Mjolnir. That's not to say that we won't enjoy them, but, for the average CBM fan, there probably won't be anything new about them. Now, I know that Iron Man 3 surprised us all with the Mandarin twist, but I can't see Marvel doing something like that in every movie between now and Avengers 2. So, this begs the question, how is Marvel going to keep it fresh? How will they find ways to surprise us and keep the audience engaged? Guardians of the Galaxy will be the answer to both these questions.

I will admit, that when GOTG was first announced as part of Marvel's Phase 2, I was very sceptical about the movie. I honestly didn't think they'd be able to pull it off. However, my excitement started to peek a bit when the character designs were released and, with all this casting news of late, my anticipation has gone through the roof. The cast has rounded out to 'Allstar' calibre in recent days. With the likes of Michael Rooker, Lee Pace, Zoe Zaldana, Chris Pratt and many more attached to this movie, the acting skill alone will make this movie very exciting. It's the most recent addition to the cast, however, that really makes the difference in this movie. Glenn Close being added to this movie adds much excitement, but the real excitement comes from who she has been cast to play. She's playing the part of a leader among the Nova Corps!

The Nova Corps in this movie opens the door for this guy to show up at any moment.

Now that's exciting! Nova entering the MCU scene will be unreal and really broaden the horizons on the where the MCU can go in future instalments. That's the main reason why GOTG has the possibility of being the most exciting movie in Phase 2 of the MCU. Entering the cosmic universe expands the scale of the MCU to unimaginable proportions. The possiblities are endless and there is no telling how far they will go. GOTG is the key to unlocking so much potential within the MCU. Marvel will utilize this to keep hardcore CBM fans guessing and engaged for the foreseeable future.

I hope GoTG will be a serious sci-fi with a few jokes here or there from the banter between the group. Not like IM3, which I liked, but thought it didn't take itself seriously. I want GoTG to be the next star wars.

@SotoJuiceMan - They have a good Director, they have a great cast and the concept art looks great. The only wild card now is writing... just have to wait and see...

Sorry but I don't have any faith in this movie. Certain things translate well on film and certain things do not. People point to Star Wars as the model for Guardians of the Galaxy...but they said the same thing about Green Lantern which also had a respectable cast.

But lets look at it from another perspective. Star Wars was extremely successful, so why haven't we ever seen anything like it since especially from Hollywood where copying is part of every producers job description? I think that when Star Wars was made no one had ever seen anything like it before...but since then numerous movies have tried and failed to reproduce that success including Dune and John Carter (both actually written before Star Wars). These movies had interesting stories and casts. Guardians of the Galaxy is not going to present something new to audiences nor does it have the current established fan base to prop it up like the more popular superheroes or Harry Potter. Heck...Thor was not exactly a raging success and that is a fairly popular comic character. So I am very skeptical that the Guardians of the Galaxy will be that well received.

@Forthas - No need to apologize, dude. You're entitled to your own opinion and I welcome you to share it. You make some interesting points and you're not entirely wrong... I don't think Thor is a very popular character. Sure, he's popular among comic book fans, but I think most of the general movie audience would have had very little, if any at all, knowledge of the character when that film was released. For those people, I say. 'Thank God for Wikipedia'... LOL

GOTG is definitely the phase 2 movie I'm most excited about.
And I really hope that we get Adam Warlock at some point.

They can't do infinity gauntlet story without him.

I hate when people are skeptical of this movie when they say "I've never read their comics but the movies gonna suck." I hear that alot. This movie has a chance at success because of the Marvel label. Comparing it to Star Wars is dumb, GoTG is nothing like Star Wars. Its not really comparable to anything because its so unique. Character dynamic, setting all that sort of stuff. Don't write this movie off without having something off which to base your skepticism.

Also I have a theory on Lee Pace's character. He may be High Evolutionary, the guy who created Warlock. Now, before Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver discovered Mags was their father, they thought it was the Whizzer. Reason being, Whizzer and his wife were worried that their children may be deformed due to the Whizzer's super human abilities. So they went to the High Evolutionary and sked for his help in case the children were deformed. Instead the children gained superpowers and were later revealed as mutants, SW and QS.

My theory is that the High Evolutionary will be forced to rtreat through time and space at the end of GoTG, and arrive on earth sometime in the eighties. The scenario I just described is shown at the beginning of Avengrs 2 and SW and QS are then fully explained.

@SotoJuiceMan - That's what I'm saying... the biggest wild card is definitely the writing of the script.

Gaurdians of the galaxy will be an awesome movie! I don't know why fans are on the fence about this film. Warner Brothers really had a missed opportunity by not hiting any of the marks with Green Lantern. With that being said we are dealing with Marvel Studios not WB. Marvel actually has comicbook fans that work on their movies unlike WB. If they really want to hit this one out of the park they will introduce Nova and Warlock. Those two characters are by far the coolest out of the cosmic bunch. I know James Gunn will deliver! In Marvel we trust!
