Twenty-two years after their morphenomenal television debut, and ahead of their 2017 feature film reboot, the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, are heading back to the comics and are receiving a much-needed 21st century makeover in the process, courtesy of BOOM! Studios. Their new comic series is set to debut with a one-shot, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #0, in January and will then officially launch with issue #1 in March 2016.

Get your first look at Jason, Trini, Kimberly, Zack, Billy, and Tommy below:

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #1 will kick-off with "Green Ranger: Year One," which will pick-up following the events of the famous "Green With Evil" arc from the television series. The story is said to follow Tommy, after joining the Power Rangers, as he still deals with the fallout of being one of Rita's former minions of evil. MMPR #1 is being penned by Kyle Higgins and will feature artwork from Hendry Prasetya.

Check out seven of the eight variant covers below:

Based on Saban’s long-running Power Rangers franchise, five teens from Angel Grove High are granted superpowers and giant robot dinosaur Zords to defend Earth against the alien villain Rita Repulsa. When Repulsa creates an evil Green Power Ranger by brainwashing recent transfer student Tommy, the team is able to free him from her grasp and get him on their side. But with remnants of Repulsa’s control still stirring in the back of Tommy’s mind, he must confront the fact he may be more of a danger to his new team than a help. This is "Green Ranger: Year One."

I don't understand the appeal behind Power Rangers. Even as a kid these shows looked dumb as [frick].

What a waste of Dustin Nguyen art.

There are 6 Power Rangers? I should have known that but I was too busy not caring about the Power Rangers in the nineties to notice.

Personally I like Super Sentai and having a toddler some version of PR is usually on or requested.

I think people forget it's a flipping kids show. It's corny and cheesy.

Kids love cheese.

If you're an adult and bitching about kids shows you have some problems.

they better not be trying to make Tommy the leader over jason here on in he movie coming out...it was always rightfully masons spot to have

@relentless1 it would've been his decision. He just would've been following orders, plus the sixth ranger was typically more powerful and let's face it Tommy was a better leader.

I love the character designs. It should be an epic comic series.

As a kid I recall watching at least 1 version of the Power Rangers show. But I have no recollection of the story, characters, etc… PR is something I have no nostalgia for…which I am thankful for

LEVITIKUZ, you're now my bro. I cannot stand Power Rangers and when they were competing for X-Men's spot in the early 90s they were just downright mentally challenged. As a 6 year old, I was embarrassed to even watch the television. Does anyone remember every time a ranger would shake their head yes or no, it would make a whooshing sound? WTF

It was always weird to me how this caught on and became popular. The Fox kids show was after my time. I knew it a decade earlier as Sentai Dynaman when it came on TBS. It was mostly a parody of Japanese movies.
I guess if enough people laugh at a joke, they start to forget it was one.

Nice

I wish this was made into a movie and not this
Horribly casted reboot.

@thewolfx that doesn't mean it would be any better of a movie.

Frankly, I think people around here forget how far away any incarnation of the Power Rangers -is not- from the comic books and movies they hold so dear.

@killemall, longevity doesnt mean better. Jason was the better leader, Tommy admitted as much when he would go to Jason for leadership advice during Zeo
relentless1
relentless1 - 12/15/2015, 10:12 PM
@KillEmAll also, Jason is the only guy to ever best Tommy in combat and that was down while he was amped as the dark green ranger so in that particular case the 6th ranger wasn't more powerful.

It's a shame that the reboot will be using the original characters instead of introducing a new team. Nostalgia is the only appeal here, and even then that fails when the new cast doesn't resemble the old ones.

Yes Sentai is a kids show but it often deals with adult themes. Case in point rangers actually [frick]ing die.
KillEmAll
KillEmAll - 12/16/2015, 9:45 AM
Common misconception that it's making fun of Japanese films. It's a long running line of shows referred too as Tokusatsu which is any show that heavily features a considerable amount of special effects. The Sentai series (US Power Rangers), Metal Heroes (US beetle Borgs), Kaimen Rider (US Masked Rider), Kamien Cyborg (US Centrion) and for a short time Spiderman.
