Director of New ‘Power Rangers’ Fan Film Claims Harassment By Saban

Did you enjoy the violent fan film released this week? Well, Saban isn't too happy about it, according to Joseph Kahn, director of the "Power/Rangers" short film. Hit the jump for more...

Joseph Kahn, director of the "Power/Rangers" short film, is claiming that Saban has been harassing him since the online release. Saban holds the rights to the Power Rangers franchise, and most recently managed to pressure Vimeo into removing the NSFW version of the film. An alternate, work-safe cut can still be viewed on YouTube.

“Saban is trying to shut ‘Power/Rangers’ down,” Kahn tweeted on Tuesday. “If you’d like to keep watching, tell them to stop harassing me.”

The 14-minute short film has been circulating the internet since Monday, depicting a decidedly violent and mature spin on the franchise, and stars Katee Sackhoff as Pink Ranger Kimberly and James Van Der Beek as Red Ranger-turned-traitor Rocky. The film was produced by Adi Shankar, known for his work on "The Grey" and "Dredd", as well as gritty, violent "bootleg" fan films such as "The Punisher: Dirty Laundry" and "Venom: The Truth in Journalism". Saban and Lionsgate will be producing their own Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers reboot, currently due for release in 2016.

Kahn maintains in later posts that his work is technically protected under fair use. “Every image in ‘Power/Rangers” is original footage,” he wrote. “Nothing was pre-existing. There is no copyrighted footage in the short. I am not making any money on it and I refuse to accept any from anyone. It was not even kickstarted, I paid for it myself. This was made to be given away for free. It is just as if I drew a pic of Power Rangers on a napkin and I gave it to my friend.”

What did you guys think of the film? Should Saban back off or is it fair for them to claim copyright infringement? Sound off below!

Why do companies hate this? It's clearly a money grab, you'd think they'd be happy, that fans are so devoted, that they spend their own money to make a fan film. But nope, if there's any possible way to make a buck, they'll rape away until it's dry.

I liked it....but since it was not fun and nobody didn't die then I guess everyone wants to see this emo-shit die.

Saban, don't mess with this guy. If you do he'll send out this guy.

It was trying too hard to be too dark, gritty and edgy when it didn't need to be where it came to the point of being freaking hilarious.

I honestly thought it was a comedy.

@MightyZeus I still think they were being tongue-in-cheek with the gratuitous nature of the film...the coke, hookers, that entire fight scene....it felt like "Power Rangers" meets "Crank" meets "Terminator".

Well it is Saban's property, but then again the creator of the fan video claims he isn't making money off of it... Hmmm

@LubedUp Yep! In the scene introducing the Black Ranger, the two women in bed with him were originally topless

@MightyZeus, that's exactly what they were going for, theres a quote by the director saying something to the effect of they wanted to take dark and gritty as far as it could go because it is such a cliché now

MattBellissimo - 2/25/2015, 10:58 AM
@Gusto Nope! Just the two ladies on the bed with the Black Ranger....in the safe for work video they have bras on.

Anyone have a link to the NSFW version? If you're going to watch something, watch it as the director intended it to be seen.
MattBellissimo
MattBellissimo - 2/25/2015, 11:03 AM
@COREY6487 I think the difference here is because it's such a starkly different take on a children's franchise. A very tongue-in-cheek, over the top, gratuitous take. It's quite different, and pretty badass/well made fan film.

This was fxcking amazing, How they tied the real life actors lives into the movie..

The short was pretty good. I do think the reason Saban is angry is because of the NSFW version.

I came across another Power Ranger trailer.

@TheGambitFreakIsBatmanOfCBM It's nowhere that I know of...I believe it was just on Vimeo. You can probably find it if you scour the internet hard enough. Really, the only difference I saw between the two versions was boobs...that's about it.

Nevermind, tried watching it, couldn't make it past 2 minutes. Power Rangers was never my thing, but my Lord, that was really bad. Power Rangers is too cheesy for my enchiladas.
