Review Of First Three "PUSH" Comics

Review Of First Three "PUSH" Comics

Summit Entertainment was nice enough to provide us with the first three issues of the "PUSH" comics, which take place prior to the movie!

Wildstorm/DC Comics have released a comic miniseries, written by Marc Bernardin and Adam Freeman, based on PUSH. The comic books are actually prequels to the movie, and are supposed to follow Nick, the lead character in the movie played by Chris Evans, as a youth. I say "supposed to" because the first three issues that I've gone through don't mention him...

The first three issues focus on Ezra, the only agent in the mysterious "Division" who is a "Changer". His power? You guessed it, he can temporarily take on the form of another person.

PUSH Comic Covers

The "Division" is a secret U.S. government agency. In issue #2 and #3 you learn a bit about the creation of the "Division." Apparently the bombs that were dropped in World War II awakened dormant abilities. Ezra was the first agent in the "Division."

Where did Ezra come from? For that you have to read issue #3... Ezra was part of Hitler's Nachtkrieg project. Hitler would round up people that were believed to possess extranormal abilities. They would then take these people and attempt to reverse-engineer them and create a super-army of psychic soldiers.

At the end of the war, as the Allies combed through the ashes of the Third Reich, U.S. Grunts found Eztra. Evidence the found suggested that Russia was also developing a similar program.

This in-turn lead to the U.S. launching their "Division," a domestic version of Nachtkrieg and beating the Russians.

I'm not big into spoilers, so suffice it to say that Ezra sees and learns things that he shouldn't and the "Division" doesn't like it.

The artwork is decent, but what makes these worth having is the story and writing. If you're into cloak-and-dagger/espionage/political intrigue stories, you'll like the PUSH comics. If you're into superhuman slug-fests, you may want to pass. The first three issues were rather light on action.

I have to admit that I'm a little skeptical about the movie... We saw some stuff at the San Diego Comic Con that makes me believe that the movie should at least be entertaining.

Worse case scenario? I got a cool "Shifter" t-shirt to wear from their booth so that I can nerd out at the movie :o)

Well, ill probably see this movie just because it involves superpowers lol and because i like some of the cast. But...i dont think itll do as good as HANCOCK, because what people liked about that movie was that it was totally origional. People dont wanna see another "powers" movie involving a "semi-ordinary person" that has all these problems. And then hes chased by the some kind of government officials and stuff. Why does there have to be people chasing them? Like the movie, Jumper. It was alright, but of course they HAD to add in the Sam Jackson group that hunts people like "them" down. its stupid i know. But whatever. Ill still see it.

I propose that if CBM gets paid to "push" a movie like "Push" it be disclosed. Against my better judgment I went to see "Push" this morning because I had nothing better to do and it has been featured on CBM as being a possible contender in the super hero genre.

Holy balls it was awful! This was the closest I've ever come to walking out of a movie, I actually stopped and thought to myself, "What can I do for the next hour if I leave right this minute?" Sucks to be me because I couldn't think of anything worth walking through the rain back to my car. At one point I looked arounf the theater and at least half of the folks in it had their palms to their heads. (Not a joke or exaggeration)

We (ComicBookMovie.com) were NOT paid, prompted or in any other way "pushed" to promote the movie. The publisher sent us some comics and I reviewed them.

We saw some footage for it at the San Diego Comic Con and thought that it had potential.
