J.J. Abrams Doubts That William Shatner Will Ever Appear In The New STAR TREK Timeline

Though there were rumours early on that William Shatner might have appeared in Star Trek Beyond, producer J.J. Abrams has cautioned that the actor might never have a role in the new timeline...

One of the more exciting moments of the 2009 Star Trek reboot was the revelation that it wasn't disregarding what came before, but starting a new timeline (now referred to as the Kelvin timeline). This transition was made easier by having Leonard Nimoy reprise his role as Spock to help guide the younger versions of the classic Star Trek characters.

Given that Nimoy reprised his role, there has been hope from some fans that William Shatner may be able to do the same and return as James Kirk in a future film, despite the character dying in Star Trek: Generations; there were even several rumours that Shatner would have a role in Star Trek Beyond before the film commenced production. However, according to producer J.J. Abrams, who directed the first two installments of the new timeline, Kirk's death in Generations is the main reason for Shatner's absence.  “Obviously it’s Star Trek, nearly anything is possible," said Abrams. "There’s the fairly simple notion that on the day Kirk was born another timeline began. But in the other timeline, Kirk died onscreen (in Generations). I don’t know how he would come back unless we went into this other reality and we did a timeline and reality jump."

Abrams revealed that there have been conversations about finding ways to bring Shatner into the mix, including discussing it with the actor himself, but the discussions usually end up at the same dead end. “In all the years we’ve been working on this, I've yet to hear a pitch that didn’t sound too contorted and contrived for an audience to swallow. And I’ve talked to him (Shatner) about it. If Kirk had lived there’d be an answer. But there’s something about his having died that makes it impossible.”

Given the nature of Star Trek, anything could happen, and fans would probably never object to seeing both Kirks appear together onscreen. Would you want to see Shatner's Kirk in the rebooted series? Sound off below!

A future version of the Kirk in the Kelvin timeline would seem to work.

Also, how is this any more contrived than bringing back George Kirk, who we watched die on screen? Or is that just because Chris Hemsworth sells better than Shatner at this point?

I'm fine with them not wanting to do it, but just say that. Just say, "that's not a story we want to tell" and stop treating us like we're idiots.

@BackwardGalaxy - Re: George, it's a combination, I think.

Time travel is feasibly explained (that's literally the only way I could see it happening), plus Paramount is probably looking to capitalize on Hemsworth's current star power that he didn't have back then. Best case of accidental casting they could hope for.

As for Shatner, they're talking about the original Kirk. Sure, you could use time travel to portray Shatner as the future version of Pine's Kirk, but it wouldn't be the same, given that "Old Spock" was the original.

@BackwardGalaxy - Wasn't that one of the rumors of what they were going to do with Beyond if Nemoy hadn't Died? That would have been awesome,

What about Tom Hardy reprising his role as a Jean Luc Picard?

I'm not sure but isn't Jonathan Archer still alive and Scott Bakula still works for CBS?

@IronGenesis - I think that John Bernathal is a better choice for Picard. He's cheaper too.

They had a nifty, somewhat emotional hologram / voice cameo planned for the first Kelvin timeline movie, but Shatner would settle for nothing less than a co-starring role.

The scene it would have played over, during the final minutes, is still in the movie, and I still imagine it being there whenever I watch it.

@NoAssemblyReqd - Shatner would be glad to be a part of it. Its just that he blew it by agreeing to let Rick Berman kill him in Generations. Plus no Directer wants to re-visit the stupid Nexus just to get him back.

I'm sure the Shat isn't happy about this decision. I remember him being pissed because he wasn't included in the reboot.

@SuperCat - Fun fact: When I was 16 and learning to drive, I took a driving course, and Shatner was the host of the instructional videos. Lol.
