In the Summer of 2016, Paramount will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the original Star Trek series by releasing Star Trek 3. Today, Paramount Pictures has given the film a July 8, 2016 release date. The film will be directed by Justin Lin ("Fast and Furious"), who was announced as the new director after Paramount phased out Roberto Orci. As of right now, no other films occupy that release date, but at one time an untitled Marvel film did, but there was no mention of it when Kevin Feige outlined Phase 3 of the Marvel cinematic universe. Though, Star Trek 3 will have to contend with David Yates' live-action Tarzan and Steven Spielberg's The BFG, which open a week before. For comparison, 2009's Star Trek and 2013's Star Trek Into Darkness both opened in April.

When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organisation has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS was directed by J.J. Abrams ("Super 8"), from a screenplay written by Damon Lindelof, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. Returning for the sequel are Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, John Cho, Bruce Greenwood, Simon Pegg, Zoë Saldana, and Anton Yelchin. Joined by new cast members Benedict Cumberbatch, Alice Eve and Peter Weller.

I'm optimistically looking forward to this, I rewatched Into Darkness on Saturday, I don't think it's as bad as some people make it out to be.

@DrDoom

I agree wholeheartedly. Cumberbatch put it over the top. And Kirk's death scene was really well done. It actually felt emotional.

Didn't Star Trek 1 & 2 both open 3rd weekend in May?

Not sure about the first film but (in the UK at least) Into Darkness opened May 3rd. I'm pretty sure the first one opened at the start of April in the US.

Abrams' Star Trek movies were released in May. I know because it was a few days off from my birthday each time and I'm a recovering Trekkie.

Unless you mean in Europe; those bastards get everything first.

@mrdeadrabbit

Its just a blah movie. Apparently we have to keep digging the same points in. Kirk is horny and irresponsible. Spock is detached. Bones "i'm a doctor not a... " speech and all his boring sayings. Khan was unimaginative.

The 2009 movie was OK but this sequel is just a rehash.

-kirk is a dumbass
-Spock is a robot until you push him
-space bewbs
-villan
-big black ship
-end

Also wtf is with the women who are dealing with space exploration hundreds of years in the future...weaeing miniskirts on duty?

Would be awesome if star trek got it's "skyfall" in this next movie...

But hearing the director of fast and furious is on board does not inspire much hope for me. :(

Read Foom's comment with a fat guy's voice, and you'll know why Trekkies don't have sex.

What is wrong with miniskirts? The women all wear unisex jumpsuits on shuttles and missions anyway. Shipboard duty involves sitting and/ or standing while pressing buttons, hardly physical work.

So basically it went from being a really grounded science fiction movie to whatever F&F is...

@robe

Cause it's really weird. Its like if the men were wearing starfleet wifebeaters or something.

Also all the women where minis as standard uniform. That's not weird to you? Lol
