Disney has shared the first image (above) from their upcoming animated kids' series The Rocketeer, which was previously announced back in February. In addition to the first look, we also received some new details regarding the show which is a re-imagining of the character inspired by the Dave Steven's comic book series of the same name.

For starters, it will "depart substantially" from the original comics.

Nancy Kanter, EVP of Content and Creative Strategy for Disney Channels Worldwide, and General Manager for Disney Junior Worldwide explained: "But it’s a piece of IP that is very alive at Disney and we imagined who could be the Rocketeer for this generation of kids.”

The Rocketeer will follow a young girl named Kit who receives a surprise birthday package revealing she’s next in line to become the Rocketeer, a legendary superhero who can take the skies with the help of a rocket-powered jetpack. Joining her on her adventures will be her "gadget-minded" best friend Tesh and her airplane mechanic uncle Ambrose.

It will be a 3D, CGI series and, as previously detailed, will be targeted at a 2- to 5-year-old audience. As such, the show will air on Disney's children's network, Disney Junior. Each episode will feature two 11-minute stories and an original song.

Variety, which attended a recent presentation that highlighted the show along with a few other upcoming Disney series, had this to say of a clip they were shown:

An early animation test was screened for the audience who got to see the series lead, six-year-old Kit Seacourt, trying out her new gear, which ended with a line that seems likely to be repeated, “Never fear, I’m the Rocketeer!”

The Rocketeer will debut on Disney Junior in 2019. A few other animated series from Disney were also showcased, which you can check out over on our sister site Toonado.

Disney Junior, huh? I guess that means no Jennifer Connelly?

@MosquitoFarmer - I was thinking the same thing. Love the Jen Connelly! Best part of that film!

@marvel72 - Unfortunately, I even find her sexy in Requiem For A Dream, all the way through to the end. Only unfortunate because of how fu**ed up that film is.

I was close friends with Dave Stevens and I know he would be PISSED at Disney diluting his character.
Hollywood SUCKS.

@rocketeuropa - At least they're keeping the brand alive and potentially helping a new generation to discover the original work.

I think this is cool, Rocketeer was great growing up, the animation style looks pretty nice from that image, and I think the show could be a cool intro to the character for younger kids

I was introduced to The Rocketeer through the Disney film and it was and still is my favorite movie. It wasn't until much later that I found out about the comic books.

I’d kinda get it if it took place in current times and had Cliff show up as an old guy to give her advice and help and such sometimes.

Until I find a woman who wants to be a lover AND a martial arts sparring partner, I'm going to guess shows like this have some agenda other than what most people think they do.

And I realize how weird that sounds, but it's my honest thoughts.

I'm a huge Stevens and Rocketeer fan. To wipe out what Stevens did and replace it with this mess is disrespectful and disappointing, given there was only one ever representation of the real source material on screen. Fans have been hoping for years for a new on-screen (big or small) version of the Rocketeer. We're more than a little bummed about this.
