THE ROCKETEER Animated Series Takes To The Skies On Disney Junior In 2019 With Some Big Twists

Production on The Rocketeer, a new animated series inspired by Dave Stevens' comic book series, has begun, with plans to premiere on Disney Junior next year. But a lot is changing with this re-imagination!

We've heard rumors about Disney rebooting The Rocketeer for a few years, but now it's official. Disney has announced that production on an animated series inspired by the Dave Stevens' comic book series of the same name has entered production.

Set to debut on Disney Junior in 2019, The Rocketeer cartoon series will be intended for young kids and their families. The audience is not the only surprise either, as it was revealed that the series will follow a young girl named Kit who receives a surprise birthday package revealing she’s next in line to become the Rocketeer, a legendary superhero who can take the skies with the help of a rocket-powered jet pack. Kit will be joined on her adventures by her "gadget-minded" best friend Tesh and her airplane mechanic uncle Ambrose.

“We are very excited to introduce ‘The Rocketeer’ to our young Disney Junior audience," said senior vice president of original programming Joe D’Ambrosia in a statement. "The vast storytelling found in the original comic books provides the perfect opportunity to create an exciting new adventure series told from a young girl superhero perspective that the whole family can enjoy together.”

Disney Junior's re-imagined show is aimed at children ages 2 to 7, and each episode will feature two 11-minute stories and an original song.

It's unclear if this new animated show will replace the female-led rebooot-sequel we heard about all the way back in 2016, which was also supposed to be led by a young African-American female pilot. The race of Kit was not mentioned in the announcement today.

Movie would had been great to have had some ties with Captain America First Avenger. I know made by the same director.
But still during the same timeline.

I would not be opposed to the Rocketeer showing up in a marvel movie. Maybe a time warp or alt dimension. Would be cool to see how he would maneuver with modern CGI

Nope! Don't care. I'm a big fan of the original comics and movie. This is for kids I understand but too much is being changed. Just create a new character and leave The Roceteer alone.

Disney Junior animated series? Damn, there goes the Bettie Page, pin-up girl references . . . "that the whole family can enjoy together." Dave Stevens would never have signed-off on that.

Some people may be against, but some disney characters like the Rocketeer or Tron would make nive additions to the Marvel universe.

@Urubrodi - Dunno about Tron (gotta think about that one), but the Rocketeer movie always made me feel like it was an untold tale of the Invaders waiting to happen. Maybe it's because I could feel Johnston's destiny to do the Cap movie and it just felt right.

@Spock0Clock - Marvel has so many different realities and dimensions that I always thought that it would be cool having a "virtual" reality. Tron would be the ideal hero for it, and crossovers would be awesome, like Iron Man going into the Grid. And yes Rocketeer would be perfect as an Invader.

@Urubrodi - I'm not opposed to Marvel Tron. Sort of like a microverse, but with bits and bytes. You know what, you've sold me.

I adore the original comics and love the movie. This isn't even remotely the Rocketeer. Pass.

As much as I loved the 90s movie and the old comics I gotta say I will happily pass on this.
No thank you Disney, how about you do something new and original?

@rocketeuropa - When they first started to talk about doing something with the franchise (a reboot of the movie, with a female lead), it was not too longer after Stevens' death. That tells you everything.

Let me guess, it’ll have thick, angular designs. With lots of mugs and arm flailing. Oh yeah and probably lots of loud talking.

When I saw Disney Junior, my brain read it as Disney XD. So they're making a Rocketeer show for babies and toddlers? That's frickin' weird.

I wonder how they're gonna get around the whole "Nazi" thing.

"You see, the Rocketeer was a superhero who fought Naz--I mean... bad guys... who did bad things or something. DON'T THINK ABOUT IT!"

Is Jennifer Connelly going to be involved? Because she was nothing short of an absolute dream in that film.

How dare they mention the comic books and the target demographic in the same sentence.

They do realise that those comic books featured a nude model as one of the leads, right?

Dave Stevens on Walt Disney's acquisition of The Rocketeer:

"Immediately, Betty and anything else 'adult' went right out with the bathwater. They really tried to shoehorn it into a kiddie property so they could sell toys. All they really wanted at the end of the day, was the name".
