SPOILER ALERT: Why the Ending of Transformers Dark of the Moon is All Wrong

SPOLIER ALERT: My take on the ending of Transformers DOTM and why it's wrong.

Editorial Opinion

SPOILER ALERT for anyone who has not seen the Transformers Dark of the Moon!

I was highly disturbed about the ending of the new Transfomers film.

To clarify, I understand it's a Michael Bay film and plots are not supposed to make sense and have holes everywhere, but this really angered me to the point that it pretty much ruined the entire film. (And I really enjoyed the first Act of the film before we learned McDreamy was working with the Decepticons.)

In the ending battle, between Optimus Prime and Sentinel Prime, Megatron intervenes after Carly calls him a "bitch"—that alone is a whole different opinion article that I may or may not right, since it was absolutely pathetic for Bay to put into the film, but I digress.

To get back to my point, Megatron joins the fight and shoots up Sentinel and then Prime takes action to kill Megatron—since Megatron was preoccupied in attempting to kill Sentinel.

After Optimus takes action, during the distraction, and kills Megatron, he walks up to Sentinel—his former mentor—who then apologizes for his actions.

Then Optimus kills Sentinel, which is a MAJOR flaw that Bay oversees in Optimus' character.

Optimus would NOT kill Sentinel after what appeared to be a sincere apology saying he was doing what he thought was best for the race and for Cybertron.

Optimus killing Sentinel after an apology is a complete turn-off and this malicous act is all wrong—but this is just my take on the ending.

What are your thoughts? Sound off in the comments.

Yeah that did seem out of character for Optimus to do, killing with no remorse.

Than again, Sentinal did in fact help the Decepticons in conquering the Earth, not care for what happens to the humans, kill Autobot Ironhide, and nearly kill Optimus Prime twice in the movie (once when he spares Optimus, thinking he might join and again where he is about to finish Optimus only for Megatron to intervene).

So I guess Optimus Prime does have some good intentions for killing Sentinal Prime.

obviously you don't know that this isn't G1. This never was an adaptation of G1.

the grounds that this isn't G1 has already been covered. so i am not going to start an argument over that.
but take it from a realistic standpoint:

Optimus Prime is a leader hundreds of thousands of years old. what are the qualities of a good leader?
compassion, strength of will, mercy, etc.
but there are times when leaders have to weather the unnatural force of war. what are the qualities you look for in a leader during war?
protection, foresight, and initiative.

Optimus Prime has been fighting a war so long, he can barely recall a time of peace. he is growing weary of it. which is why he killed Megatron while he was distracted by Sentinel. and he executed Sentinel, his old mentor, because of the humans and fellow Autobots that that he had slain. and the plans he had for what was left of our race. it stands against everything that a Prime represents.

you call what he did out of character, but i believe that any leader would do what Optimus in the heat of battle. why?
to prevent further bloodshed and usher in a phase of peace that has long been denied the soldiers who have fought in the war.

@dork
so you are saying that you are against realism in movies???
or are you just a Bay hater????
i don't much care for what the movies have done to the mythology either, but i have learned to leave my emotions at the door. ESPECIALLY seeing as how i am paying fifteen dollars to see a good movie.
i will do anything and everything to enjoy a movie.
and Michael Bay is known for making popcorn flicks.
if you want a faithful ADAPTATION of a comic or tv show, go watch a Christopher Nolan movie. otherwise, sit back, shut up, and enjoy the show.

Traitors are shot in near every army are they not?

Sentinel had betrayed the Autobots, his people, his cause, and all the principles that they held dear. He was willing to use a world full of other sentient beings as slave labor which was shown in the last film to be considered an act so immoral to the first Primes that they sacrificed themselves to stop it under The Fallen.

Given all that I think he had committed enough wrong to warrant summary execution. Apparently so did Optimus. And like Wade said, it is wartime and military justice is swift on the battlefield.

After OP kills SP there is some dramatic music in the background. Made me think he mite have turned a little evil.

Sentinel Prime killed Ironhide in the most graphic and painful way a Transformers has died in these three films. He betrayed his own kind, planned to enslave 6 billion people and was probably going to kill all the Autobots (including Optimus). Let's say that Optimus doesn't kill him. That alone is a big mistake. Optimus couldn't defeat him one on one. That was evident. Had Megatron not shown up and attacked Sentinel, Optimus would have died AGAIN. Optimus was simply protecting his friends (and the whole freakin world) and exacting revenge for Sentinel killing his friend. I had absolutely no problem with it.

I'm with the no problem camp too! I'll explain why: I think it leaves things open for another movie...if they make another they'll struggle to bring back Megatron AGAIN! I have to admit though to being rather suprised at Optimus's lack of mercy, but also Sentinel's 1/2 assed apology at the end! I left the theatre with also sorts of ideas for future plotlines running though my head!
Anyway....Sentinel's voiced by Spock for goodness sake...and he came back!!!!

@Wadey I think he was joking about the realism thing. It's the fact that you spoke about realism and twenty foot tall transforming alien robots in the same sentence.

Anyway, I'll see this soon for myself. It's part of Bay's trilogy, so I dont expect much sense from the film. As long as it's better than Revenge of the Fallen. If it surpasses the first, then that's a plus

@ACira: it's much better than ROTF. it's got more action than the original but it as a film is not better. Sentinel Prime is awesome though.

sorry if i came off a little strong.

if i offended you i apologize.

i'm so tired of hearing this argument.

everyone keeps saying it goes against Optimus Prime's character, but thats ridiculous.

even in the old G1 series, the movie specifically, he shot and killed so many Decepticons it isn't even funny. I think people forget that.

also, its war. he killed a traitor. you know what the U.S. army does to traitors and deserters during war? they kill them.

this is such a stupid argument, especially since Optimus and all the Autobots have killed plenty Decepticons, in the old show, AND the newer movies. This is nothing new and shouldn't be surprising to anyone.

Look If You Were In Michael's Position You Would Feel How Much Stress The Dude Was On For This Movie..I May Agree With You On Optimus Being Out Of Character But Sentinel Was Being A Traitor To His Own Kind...Their Is No Excuses For Doing That To Optimus And The Rest Of The Autobots..If I Were Optimus Prime I Would Have Picked Up Sentinel And Say "You Have Betrayed Us,And For That,You Shall Get What You Deserve.(Shot In The Head)..AUTOBOTS OUR WAR FOR CYBERTRON WAS OVER LONG AGO BUT,OUR WAR FOR EARTH HAS ENDED WITH GREAT VICTORY.

I don't think the issue is Optimus killing Sentinel, so much as SHOOTING HIM POINT BLANK IN THE FACE WHEN HE'S ALREADY W2OUNDED. I think beheading him would've been as meaningful, but less cruel.
