GOTHAM: Nicholas D’Agosto Talks 'Harvey Dent' And The Chances Of Seeing 'Two-Face'

Gotham continues to shake things up as it explores the titular city before Bruce Wayne dons the cape and cowl as Batman, and in this interview with Nicholas D’Agosto, we learn more about his take on Harvey Dent and whether or not we should expect to see his transformation into Two-Face...

Like a lot of the other future villains we've met so far in the series, Gotham's Two-Face is quite a bit older than Bruce Wayne, and we'll get the chance to learn more about him in next week's episode. Talking to Entertainment Weekly recently, actor Nicholas D'Agosto was asked where exactly Harvey Dent is mentally when we first meet him. "I don’t want to go so far as to say they’re written. I don’t want to stress that too much. The character does get established as a positive character that Jim Gordon [Ben McKenzie] can get behind. But there’s an ambition in his Harvey Dent, there’s almost a craven ambition to him, and that can lead to his more angry episodes. It lends itself to a darker element to him that most people will know. Dent is still a pure and genuine character who switches with the accident." As for how much Gotham will pay homage to the character's comic book roots and if we'll see any forshadowing, D'Agosto added: "Oh yeah. It’s a facet of the television world. It’s important to speak to a larger audience and to speak to have these kind of [touchstones] because people have their minds in so many different shows. Definitely from the first scene you’ll see me flipping a coin. I hope it comes across like in Eckhart’s version where it was used by Harvey as a tool to subtly manipulate people into getting his way."

Of course, one of the biggest questions in regards to Gotham is whether or not we'll see some characters take on their villainous personas BEFORE Bruce Wayne decides to become the Caped Crusader, and when he was asked whether or not we'll see Harvey become Two-Face, the actor teased: "I don’t know. They always keep us actors in the dark. I think it would be at least a couple of seasons. They’ve taken certain license with certain elements of the story, like they’ve played up a large age difference between Harvey Dent and Bruce Wayne. So who knows where they’ll go with it? I hope I get to be Two Face somewhere in the middle of the run so I can really explore these two halves." What do you guys think?

To me I think that a few seasons they should do a time skip to when Bruce is a teenager then go on from him suiting up to being Batman. Then you can start having Gotham be a young Batman show.

After all we're getting a prime old Batman in the "Batman v Superman" universe, why can't we get a young Batman in Gotham?

To me that would be cool.

Except I doubt Dent was 40 years old when Batman first showed up lol

I would expect Bruce to complete his train by the final season and his first failed attempts to become a vigilante before he gets the Bat through the window thing and the last few episodes is all Batman. I say this happens between 20 through 23.

There's no need for Harvey Dent to become Two Face when there's no Batman for him to convey the innocent side ofh im when he's disfigured. That's the best part about two-face and batman, it hurts Batman knowing this guy could've been as big a hero as he was without a mask on, this show would shit on that emotional conflict by just throwing two face in for ratings.

Also, I don't think they will do a time jump. This show is about Jim Gordons rise to being the chief of police for the special crimes unit, everyone on this site keeps forgetting that. Bruce Wayne's journey is a side story.

You know, this could all tie into an eventual finale for the series. Some event happens in Gotham where the need for another brand of justice arises, and a now adult Bruce becomes the Batman for the first time. Gordon becomes Commissioner and reluctantly allies himself with the new vigilante. And whatever this event is could have such catastrophic consequences that they embitter the once idealistic Harvey Dent, making him a much angrier figure and putting him on a path where he's one tiny step (the scarring) away from cracking and becoming Two Face.

That way, you round off Gordon's story arc (rising through the GCPD), Bruce's story arc (becoming Batman), leave Harvey a broken version of himself ready for his transformation, and honour the name of the show by displaying Gotham in its true chaotic glory, as a character in and of itself that is capable of warping and twisting even the best people, and a place that truly needs an extreme example like a man in a bat costume to make a difference.

Of course, that idea would necessitate a time jump for the finale, which could work as long as the seeds are sewn in advance; kind of like Breaking Bad jumping forward a year for the finale, but going a bit further than that.

I wouldn't mind of they skipped ahead a few years and had Bruce actually become Batman. This would be after a few seasons of seeing him grow up. I doubt that they would actually show Batman but seeing hints of him here and there would be cool.

Sigh... Anyone else expect the producers to say something this stupid?

The massive age-difference between Harvey and Bruce is already stupid enough, and having him become Two-Face beforehand would be even stupider. I am a fan of the show and what they're doing with the characters however (true to source material or not) and I'm just starting to accept the fact that this is basically just going to be Gordon vs Batman's Rouges Gallery with little concern given for why all of Batman's villains will be elderly men before he's even in his 30s (except Hush, Poison Ivy, and Catwoman).
