AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. EP Jeffrey Bell Talks Shocking Season 2 Finale

Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. aired its climactic season finale last night, and EP Jeffrey Bell has opened up about some of the episode’s most shocking events. He also teased a few things to come for next season - but be warned, there are plenty of SPOILERS ahead!

Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. aired it's season finale last night on ABC, capping off a fantastic sophomore season for the Marvel show. After all of the twists and turns during the two-part episode, the show's executive producer Jeffrey Bell had a chance to sit down with Variety and have a chat about a few of the loose ends - starting with that shocking cliff-hanger for Agent Simmons:

“When we first started talking about the Monolith, we knew that it needed to present a threat and we needed to demonstrate some of that threat and the promise of more story, because we want more people to watch next year... It’s easy to kill a character for shock value or whatever, and we did have a number of deaths this season, but I don’t think they were so much for shock value... We prefer to leave you with something to talk about… The idea of getting Fitz and Simmons — who had been one person — to become two whole people, come back together, agree to go on a date, and then have this happen, felt beautifully poetic and promises some really intriguing stories next season.”

On the increasing role of powered individuals on the show:

"The Marvel universe is broad and deep and we try to tell stories from all over that; we had to begin by just introducing these characters — most of whom had not existed before — and getting invested in them, and slowly expanding... People seem to respond to powered people on the show and while it’s not going to take over and become what the show’s about, as a texture and flavor of the stories, we really enjoy that."

On Grant Ward - and his apparent return to Hydra:

“It sure looked like Ward’s starting his Fight Club version of Hydra, but one of our challenges [is] any time you have an evil, villainous empire, what motivates those people? Whitehall this past year was just an old school Nazi — he was literally from the ’40s, and so for him that was about power, eugenics, control, it all made sense, and for Ward to come to this place honestly… This is a guy who, a couple of episodes earlier, was really happy that he got to spend time with the old team and feel like he was part of that, but then after Agent 33’s death at his hands he did discover that he likes being part of a team. So for us, it’s a natural growth for the character, as twisted as he may be, and the idea of him with a personal vendetta against our group of SHIELD gives him all the motive he needs”

On how Mack 'stole the show' in the finale:

"We realized as we did the edit of the finale, “wow, Henry’s got all the good lines this episode.” There’s a humor to him and his character that we weren’t aware of when he first showed up because he’s this giant, handsome man, and then you realize there’s this great, dry sense of humor and you also realize “wow, he’s good in scenes with anybody.” You can put him with Fitz, you can put him with Bobbi, you can put him with Coulson, you can put him with Hunter and he’s really good with everybody."

If you like, you can read the full interview here. Bell went on to talk about
Bobbi & Hunter, Skye's parents and the tie-ins to Agent Carter. What did you think of the finale, and what direction would you like to see the show go in Season 3? Leave your thoughts below!

It was [frick]ing awesome, a few nitpicks aside. The dude that plays Lincoln isn't the best actor and had one line that was a real groaner . Plus, a few bits were rushed... and also, how exactly did Cal kill Jaiying? Couple of well placed bone breaks? She's a thousand year old immortal.

That was insane! maybe the best episode they've ever done.

Where was Fury and or Maria Hill in the finale?

When the beacon sent the SOS why didn't they show up too?

Hmmmmm.

This episode was f'n incredible! It was pretty much a 2 hour movie. Cal is such a wonderful character and the sacrifice he made for Skye was so gut wrenching. Many manly tears were shed when they said their final goodbyes to one another and then when they saw one another again and he didn't recognize her because his memory got wiped. Also did Venom eat Simmons? So many awesome stuff going to happen in season 3, Coulson's new prosthetic hand, Secret Warriors, Ward/Hydra, and new Inhumans. I can't wait!

Also I'm willing to bet Jiayang is still alive, she can heal and I was really enjoying her Brotherhood of Evil Inhumans. Fox can kiss that X-Men TV show they want to do goodbye.

@miro hill isn't a shield agent currently. She was probably helping set up the New Avengers facility. And who knows where Fury was, for all we know he was in one of the quinjets that peeled off but seeing as he isn't a shield field agent it's a pretty big reach of a nitpick.

@rormachine yeah looked like he crushed her spine. Honestly as graphic as parts of that episode were they probably weren't able to go all out on her death while remaining tv-14

a clandestine group of powered individuals working towards finding their place in the world while establishing a peaceful co-existence with "normal" human beings... could that work?

Yeah, I think that could work.

Not a nitpick. I genuinely wanted to know.
But yeah good explanation.

Just watched the finale.

Goddamn that FitzSimmons ship teasing. Hopefully they will pick that story up in Season 3 with Simmons Doctor Manhannaning herself out of it, or something. She was one of my favorite characters in the first season and never really got anything to do in the second.

Skye / Quake
Simmons / Marvel Equivalent of Raven, maybe?
Morse / Mockingbird
Mack / Axe-Man, I guess?
Hunter / ...uh... Hunter

It's a good foundation for a new team with Coulson and Fitz in support. Gonna miss May, but it's a good end for her so at the very least she deserves a break.

Anybody notice that the hydra guy that said "hail hydra sir, TASK?" To ward at the end? Nod to taskmaster maybe?

I like the extent to which Skye uses her powers, she's a very powerful character now. I also liked mack in this episode, he was badass. Ward was great as per usual, and chopping Coulson's hand off was very cool. Hopefully he gets some form of cool shield prosthetic or something next season. A couple of things seemed rushed, a couple of effects were off, and a couple of lines were a bit cheesy, but overall it was a really great bit of television. So good in fact, that I didn't even realise how long it was!

Also, fish oil? I know this show is apparently big in China, but do they have to pretend that acupuncture and dietary supplements are actually more than just mystic hokum?

Oh, right. I forgot about all the Eastern shenanigans that we're gonna be getting from Iron Fist... Oh well, I guess if the Marvel Universe can have chi-punches, then it can have rhino horn laxatives, too.

Very good finale. Better than season 1 finale imo. Loved that scene with Skye/Daisy fighting that Inhuman that can multiple herself. Looked like a scene from a Zack Snyder movie. I'm honestly glad Raina is gone, she annoyed me. It seemed to me that that scene at end with fish oil was the MCU's version of the Terrigen bomb (but one of lesser consequence). Man did Cals transformation suck; all that build up for a stupid design, thankfully it was only a short scene. Can't wait to see who's gonna be in Skye/Daisy's team, I think Lincoln will be one.

Man Gemma better not be dead. If the monolith spits her out with powers the team could have a beautiful dynamic. If it did kill her does it mean she was actually an inhuman, which would be sad. She should come back with a death touch. It would be a interesting thing for a doctor turned killing machine.

Coulson should get a deathlok arm. Then nearly the whole original team will have powers. You could finally bring in graviton back and they might stand a chance.

Am I the only one who was thinking about Speedball during that entire powered bit at the end? Gonna set up for Civil war, maybe?
Bulldawg2014
Bulldawg2014 - 5/13/2015, 4:50 AM
I actually liked Cal's transformation. Good use of practical effects. I could see how it wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea though. And I think the whole fish oil supplement's thing is a good twist mostly just because it allows the mcu to rapidly multiply the number of "enhanced" on the show. A world suddenly dealing with thousands of people with super powers is much more likely to resort to extreme measures to protect itself which could point towards Civil War

@o0oMiRAGEo0o

If you're talking about the tattooed guy, he says: "Hail Hydra to that. What's the plan, sir? Chaos?"

Even so, Ward being done going solo, training a team of rough-and-tumble Hydra washouts is very plausibly Taskmastery. It could be where they're going.

My takeaway is mostly that I'm tired of dancing around codenames. Mack calling Skye "Tremors"? Come on! Who are these TV executives that are so afraid of codenames? I understand the hesitance on costumes, they can be hit or miss, but what's the problem with just calling Bobbi "Mockingbird" or Skye "Quake"? It's already a TV show about superpowered superspies. If people are still watching by the second season, they aren't going to suddenly get turned off by slightly goofy super names.

I had a lot of problems with last year's season finale. I have to say, I didn't have many with this one! :D

There were a few things that felt off (like someof the writing here and there, Ward's trap for Hunter, Cal's somewhat lackluster transformation etc). But the overall level of suspense and emotional impact the episode had made up for that.

Especially the Cal/Daisy scenes really got to me. Kyle MacLachlan was such a great addition to the show, and while I know many people seem to find Chloe Bennet's Skye/Daisy annoying... yeah, [frick] you, she's beautiful and awesome and I love her! ;)

I would have liked more bulge in the jacket, just to give him a more ape-like look, but overall, it wasn't as underwhelming as I was afraid it would be.

The Mr. Hyde probably wouldn't have worked if it wasn't MacLachlan doing it, though. He is such an engaging presence that even if the effects weren't all that drastic, he was still the same weird lunatic underneath, so it still worked.

Guys doesn't that stone/Rock only react when there is a Inhuman within the vicinity? Why did it attack Jemma? Hmmmm... Imagine her becoming something that she has been afraid of...
