Joss Whedon Jokes That Coulson Is Still Dead; Says The "Television Series Is Just A Fever Dream"

We've had a lot of talk as of late regarding the death of Agent Phil Coulson and whether or not he will appear in another big screen film. Well, Avengers: Age Of Ultron director Joss Whedon jokes about the character's resurrection in Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. in a new interview...

I'm sure you watched The Avengers film and saw that Agent Coulson was killed by Loki. Then, a few months later Agent Coulson was resurrected and a new television series was created titled, Marvel's Agents of SHIELD. Avengers: Age of Ultron Director Joss Whedon already revealed that he disliked that decision, but now while talking with IGN, he revealed that as far as the movies go, Agent Phil Coulson is indeed, dead and the TV series does not tie-in to the movies. “Yeah he’s dead. The entire television series is just a fever dream. It’s a Jacob’s Ladder moment he’s having at the point of death, but we don’t give that away until after season seven. And there’s a snow globe. Now I’ve given it away. Bollocks!” Whedon joked.

Aside from the jokes, Joss Whedon then revealed why he made this decision to keep Agent Coulson dead. “It’s a weird little yes and no. As far as I’m concerned in the films, yes he’s dead. In terms of the narrative of these guys [The Avengers] his loss was very important.” He then added, “When I created the television show, it was sort of on the understanding that this can work and we can do it with integrity, but these Avengers movies are for people to see the Avengers movies and nothing else.” Whedon then adds that it would not make any sense to have Coulson pop back up and reveal to the Avengers that he’s alive. "It would neither make sense nor be useful to say ‘Oh and by the way remember me? I died!’”

Besides Coulson's death, Whedon revealed a few reason why he thought making a Shield television series wasn't a good idea. "I think actually the movie people were a little bit cross about the TV show. They were sort of like ‘Well you can have this but not this. And this but not that.’ It’s complicated enough as it is without me adding another layer of complication. We also created a TV show called S.H.I.E.L.D. right before they made a movie where they destroyed S.H.I.E.L.D.. So everybody’s having a GREAT time!”

Flash seems to have had the whole season written before they filmed it, or at least a descriptive outline, but AoS just seems to throw it together last minute. It should've only been one season if anything. The fact that they killed Coulson shows you that none of these characters could ever be in contact with the movie characters. The MCU is suppose to be integrated. But with this, they're beating a dead horse since they can't ever be involved with anything else. It's not like Daredevil, Agent Carter or the One Shots. Thank God I couldn't make it past S1Ep1, I would be pissed to find out this show goes nowhere.

People go on and on about this "shared universe with tv shows" how it's so grand and great that Marvel is doing it yet clearly, even Whedon says, they're not even shared as much as you think.

Wow, Whedon is hitting Marvel hard lately. this and his comments on his paycheck for A1 and Edgar Wright's script. He is kinda pissed at Marvel I think for some reason.

I never expected Coulson to go back to the big screen. It's a very SHIELD thing to do, bring him back and not tell anyone. Besides, Coulson has already interacted with 2 people from the movies, Sif and Hill, and he told Sif not to tell Thor, and Hill obviously won't tell anyone. It is what it is. SHIELD is a fantastic show that has given us a great introduction to the world of Inhumans. Plus it's given us Mockingbird, and Chloe Bennett's cleavage.

That's a winning situation right there.

First, he was joking.

Second, he created the show! He's just acknowledging the difficulties of it.

Third, this article if flame bait in the worst way.

Fourth, I can definitely see Coulson showing up during the Infinity War - by then, it will be meaningful, especially if he gets to contribute to the war against Thanos and his armies.

You can't be serious.

WHAT.

Why would he be dead, if he's alive in AoS ???
Isn't this a shared universe ??? Wait, it IS, because friggin' Sif herself made appearances in the show.

What the heck is going on here, Marvel ?? Either own the death completely, or let him live. You CAN'T do both.
