THE MANDALORIAN Executive Producer Jon Favreau On Making A Series Which Appeals To New And Old Fans

Unlike the Star Wars sequels, everyone loves The Mandalorian, and executive producer Jon Favreau has now explained how they went about ensuring it was a series that appealed to everyone. Check it out...

The Mandalorian debuted on Disney+ to widespread critical acclaim last November, and Star Wars fans - who are divided on seemingly everything - ended up coming together to celebrate the first live-action TV series set in a Galaxy Far, Far Away. The reaction to The Rise of Skywalker, on the other hand, was overwhelmingly negative, so what did the show do right?

Well, it managed to find a middle ground appealing to both longtime fans and newcomers to the franchise, something executive producer Jon Favreau explains was their mission statement from the start.

"We wanted to really wind it back to the things that inspired the original Star Wars and really get it small in scale and tell simple stories, because part of what you inherit when you’re going to see Star Wars now is this whole history, because the stories have been told for decades, and it was nice, with the new medium, to be able to start with a new set of characters to introduce a new audience," Favreau told Deadline in a recent interview.

"But we always knew…and this is something I learned from…over at Marvel and working with Kevin Feige, is you always want to keep the core fans in mind, because they have been the ones that’ve been keeping the torch lit for many, many years, but these are also stories for young people and for new audiences," he continued. "These are myths, and so you always want to have an outstretched hand to people who might not have that background."

"And so you’re really telling two stories at once. You’re telling the story for the people who are fresh eyes, and you’re telling the story for the people who’ve been there with the property and with the stories and the characters for so many years, and make sure that you’re honoring them, as well."

That sounds like the perfect approach, and it's for that reason the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies do find so much success. This approach is one the Star Wars sequels could have really benefited from, as the way characters like Luke Skywalker and Emperor Palpatine were handled alienated a lot of fans who had certain hopes for them in the follow-up to the original trilogy.

The Mandalorian returns to Disney+ for a second season this October.

The main story in Season 1 was fantastic but some of the side quest stories got boring quickly.
But these guys

@WakandanQueen -
KK decided to give a diverse group of directors and writers a chance at doing SW. They failed.

STEP 1: RESPECT THE FANBASE
STEP 2: HIRE PEOPLE WHO LOVE STAR WARS
STEP 3: DONT USE STAR WARS AS A PLATFORM TO PUSH WHATEVER AGENDA YOU HAVE
STEP 4: PROFIT

@globaltravels - a black guy, an asian chick, a Maori guy, a white chick and two white dudes single-handledly made something more beloved than KK could ever make with her “story team” composed of literally just White women constantly on their periods trying to push a Female Empowerment movement.

Respect the fans and you will be respected back. Make agenda driven feminist trash movies like the sequel trilogy and you get what you deserve

God, this site is so toxic when it comes to Star Wars

@DaHyro - How? There's only maybe one comment here I would describe as toxic.

1/11 comments isn't a bad ratio.

“[The Mandalorian crew] made something more beloved than KK could ever make with her “story team” composed of literally just White women constantly on their periods trying to push a Female Empowerment movement”

or the comment right above mine, “ Make agenda driven feminist trash movies like the sequel trilogy and you get what you deserve”.

Besides, this is a small article, there’s not gonna be a lot of comments. I’m talking more in general

@DaHyro - I wouldn't call the second comment toxic. I don't think it's correct but it's not necessarily toxic. Thinking there's a political agenda behind a film isn't an inherently toxic mindset.

And tbh, I feel Star Wars articles are generally pretty clean here. Toxicity is more of a problem in other areas.

Imagine where the franchise would be if they'd approached the sequel trilogy with that attitude. And I know that some people think that they did, but... nah.

@Kyos - imagine if the OG cast were on screen together in an entire movie. Or if the sequel trilogy was more than just nostalgia cash grab.

Why in the name of all things good and sacred did they not give him the new trilogy? He was on par, a far as success goes, with Abrams. Pisses me off they wasted an entire trilogy, again.
Also, "teach the new, respect the old" is a genius plan and what Star Trek should do

Never fear, Favreau is the future of SW and his intrepid dojo of directors as well.

The mistake that Kathleen Kennedy and Disney made was to turn a trilogy plus a few side movies, over to a wide array of writers and directors to give "their take" on SW. None of them used the cultural underpinnings of the original trilogy as a starting off point, they used the SW Universe as a starting off point. What happened is we got hits and misses and some really convoluted stories. While plenty of money has been made we are here talking about being disappointed with the product.

It is a sign of great respect for the property that even though the Sequel Trilogy made $4.7 billion on an $837 million budget combined Disney put future projects on hold and are mapping out a new future. What happened is that they tried something and it didn't work that well and now they are trying something else.

As for The Mandalorian and Favreau we can assume at this point that the future of the SW universe is in his hands with Dave Filoni, the ultimate SW geek who managed to go pro and live his childhood dream. If you watch the Disney Gallery they go into great detail about Kurasawa and Westerns and Joseph Campbell and all the other influences that actually go back to the origins of drama in greek and roman times. FAvreau helped to birth the MCU and now gets a chance to resurrect SW.

As for the incels, bigots, misogynists and misfits, please please please go pound sand.
