Which Cinematic Universe do you prefer? MCU or Fox's X-Men?

Which Cinematic Universe do you prefer? MCU or Fox's X-Men?

Although the answer might be obvious to 99% of the planet's population, Fox's consultant Mark Millar shares different thoughts...

You may (and probably will) disagree, but in Mark Millar’s point of view, Fox movies are not that far away from reaching Marvel Studios in terms of quality. In the consultant’s own words:

“You grew up with the superhero market, and the superhero market is all about press, and superhero fans were down on Fox for years. Then like Fantastic Four movies, they hit – Elektra and everything – but then I always say, ‘Look how good the X-Men films were.’ Really, if you run through them X 1, X 2, The Wolverine, there’s some really high quality stuff there.

I’d say the hit rates are as good as Marvel’s. It’s better than Sony’s, better than Universal’s. I think Fox is spending the money. They are really getting the big directors and they are getting the big writers. I know they pay much more than Marvel or DC in terms of the talent they attach to the things. So I just think as a comic fan I love having that Fox stuff there.”

Obviously, in a matter subjective such as this, we would not expect anything different from Fox consultant. Furthermore, he shares his opinion concerning the film rights of Marvel characters:

“You know, they’ll talk about Marvel, ‘Wouldn’t it be brilliant to have everything back under one roof?’ I always say, ‘You would have less movies coming out.’ People don’t realize this. No studio is going to bring out more than three or four movies a year. So you have Guardians of the Galaxy this year, you do Fantastic Four next year. So I think the system we’ve got right now is great. And I’m having a nice time with these guys (at Fox).”

So what do you think? Should Fox continue to have the rights over X-Men and Fantastic Four, or they should revert back to Marvel Studios? And which studio is making the best high quality movies in the moment? Share your thoughts below.

Fox should keep the rights. X-men would just go on ice if it went back to marvel right now. Marvel is a small studio, it doesn't have the man power to do 4-5 marvel films a year. They can't do spiderman, x-men, captain america and avengers all in one year.

I do reluctantly agree with some of what he says and he is reasonable. Fox spends more money on talent as a whole (RDjr obviously the exception). I just want quality movies, but as a fan of the comics I also want a good representation of the source material.

Poorest representation of comicbook characters I would have to say are coming from DC. Arrow as much as I enjoy the show for what it is, is a horrible, horrible portrayal of Green Arrow/Oliver Queen. And I think they are, but hope they aren't going to make those mistakes with BvS. Time will tell.

The best of the X-Men movies are as good as the MCU movies (and even better than the likes of Iron Man 2 and 3). But those are about it, when it comes to the Fox Marvel films. The rest don't reach that quality.

What exactly is he doing as a consultant anyway? The last I've heard he wasn't doing jackshit of what he was supposed to be doing.

X-Men First Class was the best super-hero film of 2011. X-Men DOFP was the 2nd best super-hero film of 2014 (the first being Captain America Winter Soldier).

X-men is perfectly fine at Fox. They are their own corner in the Marvel Universe. It's the Fantastic Four that needs to come back to Marvel Studios because they fit with the direction the MCU is going.

Millar is correct about we getting less movies if all the rights reverted back to Marvel. I doubt we would ever see any movie unless it was a big team or character -surely not Guardians of the Galaxy. And he probably is right about FOX pays more money to its actors than Marvel as well.

My problem with FOX is that they throw out the continuity left and right to fit each individual movie. And kill characters they've introduced only a movie prior. Their timelines are screwy with Cyclops and Havok living in different decades. They killed Banshee and White Queen, introduced in First Class for no reason but to serve DOFP. They don't get characterization right such as their version of Quicksilver. There isn't as much faithfulness or respect to the source material like Marvel is putting into their movies. And their attention is soley on only a few characters like Wolverine, Magneto and Professor X. What happens when the original cast gets too old to play those parts? Yeah, FOX really has problems not expanding their universe over the past 7 X-Men movies.

He's right, the system is better now.
I'm glad X-Men aren't with Marvel, Wolverine would be even more watered down and we'd have to wait a long time between movies. Also, it would take away the "unique" factor that being a mutant has.

@Batz

Don't fool yourself, EVERY big studio is doing it for money, and I'm sorry to tell you this but Marvel certainly is doing it for money.

"I know they pay much more than Marvel or DC in terms of the talent they attach to the things."

Fox has Sir Patrick Stewart & Sir Ian Mckellen attached to the X-men franchise, and they are highly respected and extraordinary talents, no denying that....but I believe the amount of highly talented and respected actors that have attached themselves to the MCU, speaks volumes....

I like both, I'm really digging where the MCU is going, but It's cool that X-Men is with FOX because we can get a different type of CBM.... I hope FOX moves forward with a Deadpool movie though, and I'm actually hoping we get a shorter, more animalistic Wolverine eventually but I respect Jackman and his dedication to the role. DOFP was a great movie.

Still, The Fantastic 4 should come back to Marvel.... Even if Trank makes a good movie it won't be the Fantastic 4 from the comics and it won't be nearly as good and epic compared to what Marvel could do with the team

I say numerous studios can produce Marvel characters allowing the amount of films to increase but with one caveat..Marvel Studios has creative control & which can allow for less mistakes & the possibility of cross over.

That would be a win-win for all parties involved, more money for them & better movies for the audiences/fans.

He's right about the Xmen staying at Fox thing I agree about that. The problem I have with Fox and Sony is that they aren't making movies because they want to. They are because they are desperately trying to keep hold of rights. This is why I will always like Marvel Studios and DC/WB more.

Floke - 8/5/2014, 4:12 AM
So.. In his logic, it should stay like this because we would have less movies? Because we are flooded with X-Men and F4 movies as it is now? I think Marvel would be able to squeeze in one of those more often than we got now. And even if we had to wait a little bit longer for X-Men and F4 movies, it would still be a shorter wait than the forever we have been waiting so far. :p

And all characters under one roof doesnt only mean more movies, it means we could have full out Marvel comic stories on the big scream without having to change because oh this guys own this guy with that name so we have use this one with that name and ahh just stop! And it would also mean no more Galactic fart cloud, makin fun of Wolverines yellow "spandex"

I like the Xmen-movies but not like Xmen-movies, more like mutated James Bond-movies or Bourne on radioctive steroids. It just doesnt feel like the comics I read at all.

You could paint Robert deNiro green and he gives the best acting of his life as Hulk working as roller-coaster operator at Disneyland with a flawless script and amazing director. But no matter how great the movie is as a movie, it would still not make a good Hulk movie.

And it is good to have a variety of different types of CBM in tone. I don't want every CBM to ether be action/comedy (marvel) or very dark (DC). I think fox is the middle ground and I love it

@BatzFTWfan I have to disagree with you on this one, In your last comment you said about how FOX doesnt pay attention to source material, I dont really see how any of the MCU films have paid attention to source material. Whedon himself said "Its the MCU not the Comics universe". Also the only films to have changed the genre of the MCU films was Cap 2 and possibly Guardians (which still echoed the Avengers an awful lot - I loved the film though, dont get me wrong) whilst the FOX-Men have FC, The Wolverine, DOFP and next Apoc as a disaster movie.

I am at risk of sounding like a fanboy but when the X-Films first started they had no idea it would become huge and need a "plan" per se', they planned on ending with X3 and going the route of spin-off's before the origins film really hurt them. Then perhaps its true they made FC to keep the rights, but everyone is usually in agreement that FC is one of the best X-Films and that surely shows it wasnt JUST made to keep the rights, otherwise they wouldnt have cared what it was like.

The costumes arent really a problem for me because yeah the original ones were black leather but pretty much everyone back in 2000 was like "Here comes the corny superhero films again". Fox planned well with the introduction of the Yellow costumes in FC, which was only possible due to the Avengers, but then the Avengers was only possible due to X-Men and SpiderMan restoring faith.

If we are going on team movies then it was only really Iron Man, Cap and Scarlet Witch that got development in the Avengers (Who is Hawkeye). The rest were just there (I am looking at you thor). That is why it is good to have the individual films for each of those characters, but again, thats something FOX was planning to do years ago before Origns screwed them.

I guess for me its just a case of back and forth, FOX has some bad films in there (X3, Origins) but 5/7 are still good. MCU has some bad ones too (IM2, TDW, I personally didn't like Cap 1 or IM3 but they seem to be generally liked so I will allow them haha) 7/9 good films. Both franchises have and will have some hits and misses but I am happy where they are. FOX somewhat seems to be getting some plan ahead of them with introducing Gambit, X-Force. And Marvel obviously does so I think its good they are both separate.

As for FF, I unlike the rest of the world am willing to give it another shot at FOX (regardless of my unhappiness of Michael B Jordan's Human Torch (even if he is a good actor), After that is out I will decide whether I want FOX to just keep X-Men and expand that further.

Well, I'd say I have no issues with the way it is but the kid in me can't help but want them all to be in Marvel studios for the sake of crossover stories. Marvel plans and lines up movies to a common goal very well which is why with more in their arsenal they could really make some good stories. I mean so many stories with avengers and x men crossover and some pretty good ones at that. Also it would be a dream to see spidey avengers and x men on the same screen. Hell even in different movies but with the same common goal. Also, it's a real pain they can't say Mutants.

Fox! because their movies moving forward and including DOFP are going to have good writing, acting, action and fun. Their lead actors are pure quality. We dont get all of that in marvel studios movies (except captain america 2).

I don't want anything to revert back to Marvel. Fox is fine, but it isn't about a universe or continuity it's about individual movies.

Right...

So you mean that because we wouldn't have more movies it wouldn't be better?

So it wouldn't be better if TASM, the Fox Fantastic Four movies, or some of the X-men movies weren't made?

Right...

So it's better that people make an adaption that shares the same name of great characters but is nothing like them and makes the GA hate them?

Well, I for one mister Millar would like quality over quantity.

Oh and congrats on your new film that actually was a "hit". B characters and unknown characters are doing almost if not better than your "established popular characters"... talk about ruining a brand...

I'm out before the Fox apologists get to me and start a mud slinging contest on the MCU.

So "MCU characters are watered down" but FoX-Men aren't? That's a weak excuse if I ever heard one. Fox's priority is for X-Men movies. They haven't released a Fantastic Four film in how many years now? So more movies is a poor excuse. More money means jack shit if the money isn't spent in the right way. They are spending all this money for great young talent, but, to get their money's worth, they end up having to dedicate all this screen time and focusing the story around the X-Men's foes instead of the characters we should be seeing. Ppl keep generalizing the MCU films as action comedies as if that's all they do (which is bullshit). The only way someone can be completely satisfied with what Fox is bringing to the table is to find some way to discredit what the competition has done better...in less time...with less money. Fox is capable of making good movies but they have all been poor representations of the X-Men and the superhero genre in general. MCU films are unapologetic and they embrace the spirit of what is loved about comic books. Some ppl are just ashamed or don't read comics so they really have no idea what they're asking for when they speak of wanting good CBMs.
