Bay Wont Be Doing "Transformers 3"

Director Michael Bay has had enough of his trade mark explosions and seems set on finding critical acclaim.

When talking of directors the words "Michael Bay" sends shivers down the spines of some and encourages cheers from others. Love him or hate him you can't deny the guy knows how to blow stuff up!

Many of his movies may not have succeeded in gaining him critical acclaim and many have been given bad reviews for lack of substance. But one thing is for sure, one thing you can count on when watching a Michael Bay film is top notch action. He has given us some of the best visuals seen in theaters over the years. Armageddon, Bad Boys, Pearl Harbour and The Island may not have hit the spot in terms of movie making brilliance but they have all given us spectacular chases, explosions and fight sequences. But is all this about to change?

Bay has told Yahoo news that, if asked, he won't do another Transformers film. and goes on to say "I feel like I've had enough of the Transformers world...people have no idea how hard it is to create something like Transformers. They (the critics) review me before they've even seen the movie." He is clearly fed up with the stigma that has attached itself to his leg like a dog on heat and he is adamant on kicking said dog into the gutter.

He added.. "After the three and a half years I've spent making these movies, I feel like I've had enough of the Transformers world.

"I need to do something totally divergent, something without any explosions."

So what does this mean for the Transformers franchise? I predict that it will carry on. A new director will no doubt bring a new angle and fresh ideas to the table. But there is no doubt that Bay will leave some pretty impressive boots to fill.

And what of Bay's career? For many, Transformers became the jewel in his crown, and with the second looking set to topple the crown of Bay's achievement is it wise for him to leave now? He seems set on removing the one draw his movies have had in search for critical acclaim. It's a risky move and one you have to respect him for. It takes balls to turn your back on what you do well and aim for a new target. Will it pay off? Only time will tell.

The thing is, i like a mindless action fest as much as anyone sometimes, but if i dont give a flying [frick] about the characters involved in the chases, explosions, gunfights..and mostly actually would prefer that they died! Whats the point? Bay is incapable of even basic one dimensional characterization..so until he learns how to make his characters "people", i wouldnt hold my breath for the critical acclaim.

I thought Bay isn't the type of guy to care about what critics have to say. I like his action films because I get what I wanted. Action, explosion, fire fights!! Like Rorsch said, sometimes mindless action is all I need. Good vs Evil, there's really no need for deep character development.

Having said that, films like TDK that's intended to be more than just an action film should be done right and be taken seriously by the director. (Good thing it was Nolan and not Bay)

"Critical acclaim"?! Who's he trying to kid? I totally agree with you Ror - action's cool, but watching a film without REAL characters to care about and a plot that makes sense is like jerking off without the pay-off (more trouble than it's worth)! Bay's an overblown (pun intended) video game director - nothing more...

I agree with Ror completely - I just tried to write the article from a neutral perspective.

You throw enough money at this guy and he will direct what ever you want him to. He's good at blowing shit up! If he didn't get critical acclaim with Pearl Harbor he's not gonna get it. That is the closest he is gonna get to what he is talking about.

LEEE777 & Ror- I agree with both of you and I do not think that it will hurt the franchise as long as they do not get someone like Ratner or Sommers to fill in.

HONESTLLY I DONT THINK 3RD MOVIES ARE IN HIM TO DO, IM STILL WAITING FOR BAD BOYS THREE..I DONT THINK HE DOES 3RDS..BUT YOU GOTTA SEE IT FROM WHERE HE SITS, WEBSITES RIPPING HIM, FANS QUESTIONING YOUR EVERY IDEA, HOURS DAYS MONTHS YEARS OF PLANNING WATCHING CGI, OVER 60 CHARACTERS IN ROTF, THATS A WHOLE LOT...MEETING THE DEADLINE....THAT IS STRESS AND COMPLICATIONS AN WEIGHT ON ONE GUYS SHOULDERS THATS ALMOST UNBEARABLE..ID FREAK OUT.

I don't think Bad Boys is bringing in the money that Transformers does. We'll see how long his stance on no third movie lasts after ROTF hits theaters.

It's kind of sad that he gets blamed for 'lack of substance' in his movies, he's not the one writing this story! That's what the screenwriters are for. It's his fault if he's filming a crap story and doesn't make suggestions to improve it.

@teabag...Whats wrong with both? You dont have to settle! Action movies can be "deep" and still blow shit up every few minutes..just not Bay action movies. Transformers gets away with it because its not overly schmaltzy, but every one of his other movies are jokes.

HOW'BOUT [frick]ING SUPERMAN!!! There aren't any explosions in Sups are there? The third Batman movie maybe??? Kickin' Nolan to the undecisive curb??? No???

Texas Chainsaw Massacre was the only decent reboot ever made, you gotta give him that. I wouldn't critically acclaim him for it but still...

No offense Shaman but Texas Chainsaw Massacre was not the best reboot. lol. I hated Texas Chainsaw Massacre. So Far Friday the 13th is but still I just HATE Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Michael Bay could do Superman and he would probably make it a movie worth the watch and money. I agree with you there Shaman.

Posturing. He wanted to take a year off and have T3 ready in 2012 and paramount announced a 2011 release date.

He is merely posturing to get them to cave in.

This is his baby - there is no way in hell he is walking away from this bonanza.

Bay got a 75 million dollar paycheck after transformer 1 with that type of money i would deal with the stress of it. Hell after that one i would of stopped and retired. But god only knows how much he will get with this transformers. He doesnt have to make another movie again and he'll be set. I could find really good ways to take care of my stress with that much money in my acount.

Ok, Bay directing Superman. You guys are joking right? You want to go from not enough action to ONLY action? Is that what passes for a good movie these days? I give up, i really do. You people should go watch Armaggedon again. Now picture Brucie in a cape and you have Bays Superman.

He'll be back... i'd bet money on it.

I can't say I'm surprised or disappointed. This more than likely means he's in negotiations for some other kind of big project.

I love his quote about being reviewed by the critics before the movie even comes out. Maybe it's because all your films look and sound the same Michael.

Good riddance Bay. Don't let the door hit you on the ass on the way out:)

@Rorschach

I think you're a smart guy and have some valid points, but its all idealism. No matter what critics or anyone says Michael bay is a great director. Even if I hated his work i would have to admit that. People honestly enjoy his movies, A LOT of people. Thats why i like his movies, they're enjoyable, but no one ever takes that into consideration. That is the only thing really worth rating a movie on. Critics are just people too, they're not the "movie gods" they have their own bias and their own taste. Really they're not paid to go sit and enjoy movies, they're paid to basically nitpick them. Not saying they are necessarily wrong, but who could honestly enjoy a movie like that...? I wouldn't, I like movies WAY to much. Like I said, Ror, you have some good points about characterization and such. In my eyes at least, Transformers is a great action flick the same way Ace Ventura or Naked Gun are great comedies. You don't watch either one to see "the Godfather". I watch those movies because I want to laugh and they deliver, and I watch Transformers because I want to see heart-pounding action and it delivers that, in spades! Thats why I too think Bay would make a great Supes, We want to see a great Supes "ACTION" movie... Especially after that melodrama brian singer gave us.

P.S. Ror, what do you consider to be the perfect action flick, or the closest to perfect?

InstigatorGIRL
InstigatorGIRL - 6/18/2009, 12:24 PM
I know you didn't ask me but I like questions like that ^_^ For me the perfect action flick is 300. Thats just me.

version4 - 6/18/2009, 12:25 PM
Oh, and as for him directing Supes.... it would be fun, but not sure it would be what Supes needs... i mean, Transformers and Bay go well together. Bay doesn't seem a good fit in Supes world... I could be wrong, though... it definitely wouldn't be Supes meets NYPD Blue.... but if Bay was given the Doomsday storyline.... hmmmm

Did you guys forget he made the criticaly acclaimed Remake of "Friday the 13th" lol

No...
Wait...
nevermind, lol

I like damn near all of his films...
Not many directors can make movies across the board.

Like imagine Scorsess (sp) making transformers
Or Bay directing Frost....

Certain directors do somethings well...
I think he leaves the charcter development to the actors and just creates the whole picture.

While you have guys like Nolan and Abrams who are character driven and paint the picture with them first and every thing else evolve from them.

He is just saying this I think as a reverse physchology thing.

I think he knows he have a mega hit on his hands...so why not go and say "all ways me"....

Moondoggy x just because people enjoy his movies does not mean hes a good director, it means hes a smart director! Lets face it, you could smear shit on celluloid and people would flock to it! If you find his movies enjoyable well thats great, i dont. all the explosions in the world mean jack shit to me without a decent story and good performances. Its not just the shitty character development that annoys me about Bay, its the vomit inducing schmaltz he spews when he does actually attempt some drama! He goes for not a dry eye in the house and gets not a clean lap in the house. Hes the Happy meal of movies. And yes he does have his place, but its not on my [frick]ing dvd shelf.

As for a perfect action movie? I dont know, but there a lots that get the right balance. The best i have seen would be the Bourne movies. Car chases, explosions, broken bones across the board and all the while keeping us interested in the characters.
ThunderCougarFalconBird
ThunderCougarFalconBird - 6/18/2009, 12:57 PM
He also produced the "Hitcher" remake. I've not seen it as the 1st was such a classic and so well made I didn't want to risk soiling it!

MoonDoggyX - you make an excellent point but I don't think Bay is good for Superman. We all bang on about how we need action in Superman and I can see why, it's great to watch! But Superman is indestructible so all out action is rendered pointless. What a Superman film needs is a deep character story along with the action. We really need to feel Supermans pain and emotions when he fails to save someone or chooses to save many lives over the one he loves. I've said it plenty of times but a villain like Doomsday or Darkseid is needed, not for the action itself but to increase the consequences of Supermans choices. Bay can deliver the fight scenes and they will look great but he can't get the character depth needed to make the Superman film that we all crave.

LOL

That's what I love about so called critics.

Some of you people actually take the time to analyze and evaluate a director's "artistic merit".

LOL

He's a guy who instructs mentally damaged meat puppets on what to say, wear and where to stand.

These are people who hate themselves so much that they decided to spend their lives pretending to be anyone but themselves by settling on a profession playing "make believe" - it's really not that serious.

Stop looking so far into it and enjoy the madness.

@Rorschach01

You are dead on about that my friend. Just because people like his movies, doesn't make him good. It just means he caters to the sheep. His character development in Transformers is horrible and he picks the wrong characters to develop. Shouldn't the character development in a movie about giant robots involve the giant robots? I mean come on.

This movie captures the spirit of why people go to see the movies. If I want drama I'd go to my local theatre and watch a play or pick a fight with my chick. Maybe they'll get CHARLIE MURPHY to direct the next one!
